• CONGO DANCE - It is a theatrical dance (or a danced pantomina) that takes place
in gravana, outdoors, during the religious and popular festivals. Each group of
Congo Dance consists of a musical section (three or four drums, flutes and canzás)
and a variable number of extras, all skillful dancers: the captain congo, the
lôgôzu, the anju môlê (angel who died) anju cantá (singing angel), opé powder
(figure performing various stunts on two floors), Mulogi the sorcerer, zuguzugu
(wizard's helper), three or four fools, the djabu (devil) and ten to eighteen dancer
soldiers.
• DEXA - Typical of Prince Island with Angolan roots. To the beat of a drum and a
horn, several pairs perform elegant wheel dances. The lyrics are almost always
humorous, or even mocking, and imply a reply from the target. The dexa is
danced for whole hours, with only slight modifications to its musical tone.

• The Spanish arrived on the island of Jamaica in 1494, when


they killed the Arauaks who lived there and took African slaves
to plant sugar cane.In 1670, the British officially took control of
the island. From the end of slavery (1833) and trade privileges
(1846), the region became impoverished.

• After all, as a former British colony, Jamaica's


official language is English. However, this is not
the first language of most Jamaicans.
