METHODS OF

VERIFICATION
What is Verification ?
Verification is a process during which data that has already been input or
captured is checked to ensure that it matches the data on the source
document.

Because humans are prone to making mistakes, measures must be put in

place to identify an correct errors that may have been introduced during the
data entry processes. A variety of verification and validation checks are used
to identify and correct a number of errors that may occur.

Good verification significantly reduces the number of typographical and

transposition errors that occur during data entry.
What is a typographical error?
A typographical error (TYPO) is a typing error that affects the text, such
as missing or additional characters. Examples are: Guyyana and British
Virgins Islanbs.
What is a transposition error?
A transposition error is one caused by switching the position of two
adjacent characters in a number or text string. Examples are typing
$5,450 instead $5,540 or Gyuana instead
Guyana.
What are the method of verification?
Two methods of data verification are double-entry and proofreading.

Double-entry is where the same data is entered twice, sometimes by different

people. If the data differs between the two entries, it does not get processed. It can
be expensive and time-consuming to use this method, but it does ensure very
accurate data capture.
For example: when placing a password, pin or a pattern on your phone it will
require you to confirm the password, pin or a pattern ,by double-entry.

Proofreading checks the data entered against the data on the original source
document. The person entering the data reads the source document and checks that
it matches what he or she has entered into the computer.
