HOW TO MAKE REFERENCES
• For the examination, you must comply with the official guidelines for written assignments at BA / Master
• http
://studerende.au.dk/en/studies/subject-portals/business-administration/examination/guidelines-for-written-a
ssignments
/
• This means specifically that:
• 1. You must have references in the text in parentheses (not in footnotes)
• 2. You should include a bibliography at the end of your answer that includes all the sources you refer
to in your answer. The sources are placed in alphabetical order according to the first author's surname
(author, year, title)
• 3. Quotes, source material summaries, rendered or slightly edited figures, tables, etc. be accompanied
by an accurate source reference

2. BIBLIOGRAPHY
If you were to have references to ALL the articles in the syllabus in your exam answer, your bibliography
would look like this for the exam:

Bibliography:

EXAMPLES OF USING REFERENCES IN THE TEXT
• In the textbook you have many different theoretical contributions. As you are under time pressure for the exam, it is OK to omit
specific source reference in the text every time you mention a contribution from the book. However, the book should still be cited as a
source in your bibliography.

Example 1:
• Answer: Herzberg distinguishes between hygiene and motivational factors. Hygiene factors are conditions such as [insert], while
motivational factors deal with [insert].
• The bibliography contains: Griffin, R.W.; Phillips, J.M. & Gully, S.M. (2019): Organizational Behavior. Managing People and
Organizations. Thirteen edition. Cengage Learning.

Example 2: when you are referring to a specific point

• Answer: However, according to Griffin (2019, p. 170), some criticisms of Herzberg's two-factor theory has been raised: the
contribution does not take into account individual differences, and different national cultures have different notions of motivational and
hygiene factors. Further points are brought forward in Griffin: (page 170) “If the theory is “method bound”, as it appears to be, its
validity is therefore questionable”
• The bibliography contains: Griffin, R.W.; Phillips, J.M. & Gully, S.M. (2019): Organizational Behavior. Managing People and
Organizations. Thirteen edition. Cengage Learning.

EXAMPLES OF USING REFERENCES IN THE TEXT

Example 3: referring to article and case

• Answer: According to Nohria et al. (2008) the individual is controlled by 4 drivers: Acquire,
Bond, Comprehend and Defend. These 4 drivers cannot be ranked or replaced. “Each of the four
drives we have described is independent; they cannot be ordered hierarchically or substituted one
for another ”(Nohria et al., 2008, p. 81). In the [exam] case, management focuses exclusively on
Acquire, which deals with [insert explanation]. This is seen in the case on page 8, where leader Y
says: "xxxx". At the same time it is also expressed in the case page 3, where manager W
comments on what she thinks her employees want: "zzzz.“
• Bibliography: Nohria, N.; Groysberg, B. & Lee, L. (2008): Employee Motivation. A Powerful
New Model. Harvard Business Review, July – August, pp 78 – 84.

TWO KEY QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELVES
1) Am I showcasing my own qualifications??
2) Am I following the rules and framework?

DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT

Top 3: reasons for a formal plagarism case
• Copying former exams
• Use of common notes without reference
• Copying from the internet

AVOID PLAGIARISM
• Signal quotes with quotation marks and provide the source
• If/when you use something that someone else has written or done, you must always make sure the source
is accurately marked
• It should always be clear which passages are the result of your own thought process and which are based
on your processing of the knowledge of others.
• Be careful with referencing in your notes: you must always be able to find the source, thus note both the
author, article or book, AND page number (e.g. Griffin pg 197)

EXAMPLE OF HOW TO REFER TO USING COMMON
STUDY GROUP NOTES
Example 1:
” Herzberg distinguishes between hygiene factors and motivational factors (Griffin, p. 169). According to Herzberg,
the hygiene factors are not directly motivating, but affect whether the employees are dissatisfied or not dissatisfied.
The motivational factors, on the other hand, distinguish between whether the employees are satisfied or not satisfied.
”(Study group notes in collaboration with 2020XXXXX)

OR
Example 2
(Study group
notes)
Note the quotation marks “…. ”In the example - it must be marked up exactly what
has been inserted from common notes.
In the bibliography: If you use study group notes in the exam answer, they / the actual study number
Study group notes in collaboration with 2020XXXXX should be stated.
