CIRCLE OF

TRANSFORMATIONS
EXERCISE 4D – YEAR 12 TEXTBOOK
LEARNING INTENTION

To be able to able to use the circle of transformations to

determine which transformation will linearise a data set.
CIRCLE OF TRANSFORMATIONS
USING THE CIRCLE OF TRANSFORMATIONS
There are two things to note when using the circle of transformations:
- In each case, there is more than one type of transformation that might work.
- These transformations only apply to scatterplots with a consistently increasing or
decreasing trend.
YOUR TURN:
Using the circle of transformation, determine which transformations could be applied in
order to linearise this data set.
CHOOSING THE BEST TRANSFORMATION
Two things you should compare between the different transformations:
- The residual plot, in order to help determine the linearity of the transformed data
- The value of the coefficient of determination,
