LEADING TO POLLUTION
RESOURCES
A resources is a physical material that humans need and value such as
land, air, and water. Resources are characterized as renewable or
nonrenewable; a renewable resource can replenish itself at the rate it is used,
while a nonrenewable resource has a limited supply. Renewable resources
include timber, wind, and solar while nonrenewable resources include coal and
natural gas.
IMPORTANCE
OF
RESOURCES:
What is the importance of natural resources? Why is it
necessary to conserve them?
Every material in our culture ultimately comes from natural resources. For
example, Coal, Oil, Soil, Water, Land, Minerals, Forests, Timber, and the Air
we breathe. The role of natural resources has on earth is imperative indeed. That
is why it’s so important for all of us to have some accountability and why we
need to PROTECT and RESPECT our environment.
1. Nature helps to maintain the environmental balance and satisfy the needs to the fullest.
2. A wide range of industrial material and biological material from plant and animal, directly or
indirectly are used in production and in the manufacturing of medicine.
3. Resources are important for the development of any country. For example, to generate energy,
one needs fossil fuels; and for industrial development, we require mineral resources
4. Natural resources are getting scarce with the increasing population, so it is essential to
conserve them. This empowers us as well as our future generation to utilize the natural Soil
pollution is defined as the presence of toxic chemicals (pollutants or contaminants) in soil,
in high enough concentrations to pose a risk to human health and/or the ecosystem
resources to the full extent.
5. They play a vital role in the economic development of the country by enriching agriculture,
trade, imports and exports, etc.
PROPER MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES:

Management of natural resources refers to the plan of action

related to renewable and non-renewable resources. Natural
resources like land, soil, water, plants and animals are affected
by global warming, overpopulation, industrial expansion and
other related reasons.
IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF
RESOURCES
● To maintain a balance in the ecosystem.
● To avoid further destruction of the environment.
● To avoid over-consumption of the natural resources.

Managing the resources would not only ensure its rational use but also put a
limit to the degradation it is causing to the environment. For example, the
usage of resources in different forms generates a lot of waste which is being
disposed off into the water bodies. This, in return, is polluting the rivers and
lakes. Limiting usage will also reduce waste generation and pollution.
POLLUTION
Pollution is the introduction of
contaminants into the natural environment that
causes adverse change. Pollution can take the
form of any substance (solid, liquid, or gas)
or energy (such as radioactivity, heat,
sound, or light).
POLLUTANTS
Pollutant is a waste material that pollutes air,
water, or soil. Three factors determine the
severity of a pollutant: its chemical nature, the
concentration, the area affected and the
persistence.
TYPES OF POLLUTION:
1. WASTE POLLUTION

2. WATER POLLUTION

3. SOIL POLLUTION

4. AIR POLLUTION
1. WASTE POLLUTION

• It is a term for man-made waste (basically consisting of

plastic litter) discarded in the environment and often found in
the sea or along the coastline, either floating on the surface
or submerged.

• Waste pollution usually involves used or unwanted material,

substances or chemicals entering the environment, and
causing some type of negative impact (on the environment,
wild life & living organisms, human and human health, or the
economy).
2. WATER POLLUTION

• Water pollution might be one of the leading global

environmental and social issues to consider, and is also one
of a number of the most important global water issues.

• It involves the pollution or contamination of a body of water,

that leads to a degradation of that body of water, and can
result in negative effects on human health, wild life and living
organisms, the environment and it’s ecosystems, and the
economy
3. SOIL POLLUTION

• Soil contamination, soil pollution, or land pollution as a part of

land degradation is caused by the presence of xenobiotic
(human-made) chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil
environment. It is typically caused by industrial activity,
agricultural chemicals or improper disposal of waste.
4. AIR POLLUTION

• Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air.

Car emissions, chemicals from factories, dust, pollen and
mold spores may be suspended as particles. Ozone, a gas, is
a major part of air pollution in cities. When ozone forms air
pollution, it's also called smog. Some air pollutants are
poisonous.
PROPER MANAGEMENT/DISPOSAL OF WASTE

Proper waste disposal and management can be done by applying the 3R

– Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Reducing-means lessening the amount of trash/garbage produced.

Reusing- refers to using materials more than once

Recycling -means creating new material or product out of trash/garbage.

HUMAN ACTIVITIES LEADING TO LOSS OF RESOURCES
Poor Farming Practices
Humans are causing a lot of stress to land resources due to the over-reliance on food production for daily
nutritional requirements. Poor irrigation practices, for example, is a key contributing factor to salinization
and alkalization of the soil that sustains plant growth. Poor soil management practices and the use of
heavy machinery and farming equipment also destroy the soil structure making it unsuitable for plant
growth.

Logging
Humans are cutting down trees to make space for residential complexes and multiplexes. Through
deforestation, the planet not only loses trees but also thousands of animals and great plant biodiversity
due to the destruction of their natural habitats. Moreover, increased logging activities lead to soil erosion
that degrades natural soil minerals.

Overconsumption of Natural Resources

The 1760 industrial revolution saw large-scale mineral and oil exploration and the practice has been
gradually growing, leading to more and more natural oil and mineral depletion. And together with the
advancements in technology, development, and research in the contemporary era; exploitation of
minerals has become easier and humans are digging deeper to access different ore. The increased
exploitation of different minerals has led to some of them entering into a production decline.
HUMAN ACTIVITIES LEADING TO POLLUTION
AIR
• Human activity is a major cause of air pollution, especially in large cities. Human air pollution is caused
by things such as factories, power plants, cars, airplanes, chemicals, fumes from spray cans, and
methane gas from landfills. One of the ways that humans cause the most air pollution is by burning
fossil fuels.

WATER
• The causes of freshwater pollution are varied and include industrial wastes, sewage, runoff from
farmland, cities, and factory effluents, and the build-up of sediment. Emissions from factories and
vehicles are released into the air.

SOIL
• Among the most common causes of soil contamination caused by human activity, the FAO highlights
industry, mining, military activities, waste — which includes technological waste — and wastewater
management, farming, stock breeding the building of urban and transport infrastructures.

• These causes include road erosion, house construction, steep slope cultivation, tourism development,
and animal trampling. These activities destroy surface vegetation and increase the potential for soil
loss through exposed swallow holes (karst fissures).

reasons.”

without becoming impure.”
