WHAT IS LONGEVITY?
‘The maximum duration of life of human beings.’ ( Caruso, C et al, 2022)

 According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ‘Globally, life expectancy has increased by more than 6 years
between 2000 and 2019 – from 66.8 years in 2000 to 73.4 years in 2019.’
FOUR FACTORS LEAD TO LONGEVITY
1.Genes
‘…the genetic determinants of longevity are dynamic and depend on the environmental history
of a given population.’

APOE:
‘Total APOE levels in plasma in very old individuals were found to be associated with lower total
cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels…’

FOXO3A:
‘...has protective effects on several age-related diseases, in particular CVDs, but also cancer and
bone fractures, and it is associated with better self-rated health…’

(Caruso, C et al, 2022)

FOUR FACTORS LEAD TO LONGEVITY
2. Physical activity

Physical activity is crucial ,but it depends on the exercise capacity of an individual.

Exercise capacity : The amount of oxygen consumption (VO2max).

(Venturelli, M et al, 2017)

FOUR FACTORS LEAD TO LONGEVITY
3. Social connections

Aging is relevant to the ‘...decline of organism ́s functions…’ which ‘...affects all physiological
systems, but the immune system is especially compromised.’

Social strategies showed positive impact when an experiment in rodents was made. Old mice lived
together with adult mice to reveal improvements in immune functions compared with those who did
not expose with any social strategy.
(Garrido, A et al, 2023)
FOUR FACTORS LEAD TO LONGEVITY
4. Mediterranean diet

•‘The Mediterranean diet meets several important criteria for a healthy diet.’
•‘The Greek version of the Mediterranean diet is dominated by the consumption of olive oil and by
high consumption of vegetables and fruits.’
•‘ Antioxidants represent a common element in these foods.’

The emergence of the Mediterranean diet was accidently; ‘The Mediterranean diet and life-style were
shaped by climatic conditions, poverty and hardship, rather than by intellectual insight or wisdom.’

(Trichopoulou, A et al, 2002)
