Foundations of Resident Care


Communication
• Objective- based on what you see, hear,
touch, or smell.
• Subjective- something you cannot or did not
observe, the patient has to tell you.
Combative behavior
• Block blows, step back
• Remain calm
• Try to consider what provoked it.
• Report to the nurse
Inappropriate behavior
• Be matter of fact, don’t over react. (this may
actually reinforce the behavior).
• If directed toward you, stay calm and
professional, state “ that is not appropriate”.
• Try to distract the person or direct to a private
area if the person is doing something
inappropriate in a public area.
• Report it, even if you think it is harmless.
Safety
• Call light in reach
• side rails as ordered
• Bed in lowest position
• Clear walkway
MSDS
• Material Safety Data Sheet
– Must have for every chemical used
– Know where it is or how to access
– Regulated by OSHA The Occupational Safety and
Health Administration
Equipment handling
• Handle in a manner that prevents;
– Skin/mucous membrane contact
– Contamination of your clothing
– Transfer of disease to other residents or areas.
Linen handling
• Hold linen and clothing away from your
uniform
• Do not shake linen or clothes, fold or roll linen
so that dirties area is inside
• Bag soiled linen at point of origin
• Place wet linen in leak-proof bags
Infection prevention
• Use Standard precautions with everyone
• Use transmission based precautions for those who are
infected with a disease as per the care plan/assignment sheet
in addition to standard precautions.
– Airborne precautions- remain in the air floating for some
time
– Droplet precautions- do not remain in the air, travel short
distances
– Contact precautions-risk from touching an infected object
or person
