Permutations
Derives the formula for finding the permutations of n objects taken r at a time.
Permutations taken r at a time
From a standard deck of 52 cards, how many
3- card hands are possible?

card hands
In your family reunion, you and your 9 cousins decided to
have a remembrance photo. How many pose will you have
if only 4 cousins will be taken a picture at a time.

𝑃 ( 52, 3 )=5,040 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠

How many permutations can we make if 7 bottles with
different colors will be arranged in a row and taking 3
bottles at a time?

𝑃 ( 7 , 3 ) =21 0 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠
Is it important in solving permutations to fully
understand what is asked, like :
a) Is duplication allowed ?
b) Is duplication not allowed?
Finding the permutations of an objects differ from one another like the
two words below.
1) SCHOLAR - The letters are distinct ;
2) STATISTICS - The letters are duplicated or replicated
Distinguishable Permutation

The word SCHOLAR is an example used in

permutations taken r at a time,
while the word STATISTICS is an example of a
problem used in distinguishable permutations.
Distinguishable Permutation
In how many ways can you arrange STATISTICS if
duplications of the arrangement are not allowed.

S–3 T–3 I–2

𝑃 = 50 , 400 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠
Distinguishable Permutation
In how many ways can you arrange MATHEMATICS
if duplications of the arrangement are not allowed?

M – 2! A – 2! T – 2!

𝑃=4 , 9 89 , 600𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠
Distinguishable Permutation
In how many ways can you arrange PAPAYA if
duplications of the arrangement are not allowed?

P – 2! A – 3!

𝑃 = 60 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠
Activity 4: Distinguishable Permutation

Directions: Find the number of permutations of the

following words and make sure that there will be no
duplications. Use the formula and concepts you learn
from this lesson.
1. MALAYA
2. MAMAYA
3. TINURIK
4. AGUINALDO
5. INTELLIGENT
