WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO STUDY THE DISCIPLINE OF PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION?

1. As a student;
2. as an individual; and
3. as citizen
PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION
• To effectively communicate, we
must realize that we are all
different in the way we perceive
the world and use this
understanding as a guide to our
communication with others.
• As time goes by, the way people
communicate, differ and grow.
PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION
• Purposive communication aims to
develop students’ communicative
competence and enhance their
cultural and intercultural
awareness through multimodal
talks by providing them
opportunities for communicating
effectively and appropriately in
multicultural contexts.
What is Communication?
COMMUN ICATION
Common Understanding

“simultaneous process of sharing messages and

creating meaning through symbolic interaction” (Seiler
and Beal, 1999)
Meaning

(Ogden and Richards)

THREE TYPES OF MEANING
(Fisher and Adams, 1994)

1. Intended Meaning
2. Psychological Meaning
3. Social Meaning
Language
- Invented to represent ideas, messages, experiences, etc. that
is completely arbitrary.
- Tens and thousands of signs and symbols which are
combination of form and meaning.
- Through this, we can accomplish: cooperation, cohesion,
narrative and culture.
Context
- Rules that tell us how to interpret our sensations and thoughts
based on the situation.
