Sound Intensity and Resonance
Sound Intensity and Resonance
As the sound waves travel outward from the source, energy is transferred from
one air molecule to the next. The rate at which this energy is transferred
through a unit area of the plane wave is called the intensity of the wave.
Intensity= P/4πr2
Unit: Watts/m2
Where r is the distance from the source.
This equation shows that the intensity of a sound wave decreases as the distance from
the source (r) increases. This occurs because the same amount of energy is spread over
a larger area.
Inverse-Square Law
I = P/4πr2
I = 0.80W/(4π(3.5m)2)
I = 5.2×10-3 W/m2
The power output of an explosion is 320 W. At what distance is the
intensity of the sound 1.5 x 10-3W/m2?
Given: P=320W , I= 1.5 x 10-3W/m2
Unknown: r=?
I = P/4πr2
Intensity and frequency determine which sounds are audible.

Resonance
• Dramatic example of resonance In 1940, turbulent winds set
up a torsional vibration in the Tacoma Narrow Bridge.
• High winds set up standing waves in the bridge, causing the
bridge to oscillate at one of its natural frequencies
Resonance
• When it reached the natural frequency.
• The amplitude of the vibrations increased
until
• It collapsed!
Resonance
• A more recent example of structural resonance
occurred during the Loma Prieta earthquake near
Oakland, California, in 1989.
• The collapse of a particular section of roadway.
Formative assessments
• A tuning fork consists of two metal prongs that vibrate at a
single frequency when struck lightly. What will happen if a
vibrating tuning fork is placed near another tuning fork of the
same frequency? Explain.
The second tuning fork will pickup the vibrations from the first
one and so the sound will be heard from the second fork. That
because two forks have the same natural frequency and resonance
happened.
