Note: These forms of arts (painting, sculpture, architecture, music, dance, drama and literature)
are considered as branches of learning concerned with human thought, feelings,
and relations.
By showing how others have lived and thought about life, the humanities help us
decide what is important in our own lives and what we can do to make them
better.
And in the naked light I
saw
Ten thousand people,
maybe more
People talking without
speaking
People hearing without
listening
People writing songs
that voices never
share…
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of
silence.
Behind the beautiful lyrics of that old Simon and Garfunkel song lies an important and
intriguing message. What exactly was Simon trying to tell us?
The humanities are the stories, the ideas, and the words
that help us make sense of our lives and our world.

On Belief
Please do not say that belief
brings people together. It
does not.
You yourself know you are
not.
Look at yourselves in your own
country. You are all believers,
but are you all together? Are you
all united?
The Humanities point the way to answers about what is right or
wrong, or what is true to our heritage and our history.

Envisioning a New Manila

“Building a Secure Future, Seeking
Practical Solutions”

Manila, Philippines
April 2005
…….Already, the people of Metro Manila are suffering. Traffic costs citizens countless
hours of lost time, not to mention wasted energy and frustration. Road accidents kill and
injure thousands of people every year, making our streets among the most dangerous in
Asia. Air pollution has raised the average Manila resident’s chances of getting lung cancer
by 16 percent. Nearly 30 percent of all crimes in the Philippines are committed in Metro
Manila, especially robbery and rape. Living in Metro Manila can be threatening to one’s
physical, psycho-social, and spiritual well-being. Yet perhaps an even greater threat is the
helplessness one feels in such an unkind environment. To many Filipinos, the woes of Metro
Manila are vivid reflections of the failures of the Philippines.
We see our urban problems are both symptoms and symbols of deeper social illnesses--
ignorance, corruption, injustice, lack of leadership, and mediocrity--that have continued to
hinder our country’s development for years. When we feel overwhelmed by the disorder and
filth surrounding us, we feel powerless change anything for the better. The deterioration of
Manila reinforces our loss of pride and self-respect as a people.
Yet the troubles of living in a third world city are very present and real for
me. I feel these troubles keenly everyday when I go out into the city, walk the
streets, breathe the air. Perhaps this just demonstrates that there are some
human needs—such as justice, peace, and beauty—that are not easily
defined or quantified. A person may have all the material necessities, yet
continue to pursue invisibles that are nonetheless essential.
Yet there is perhaps one human essential that living in Manila has helped me
to fulfill—and that is the desire to envision and imagine. Living in Manila
challenges me to see beyond what is, and instead search for what is possible.
This city may be dirty and chaotic, but at the root of my frustration is an
awareness that things can be better. I am a lucky one, but not because this city
gives me what I need. I am a lucky one because this city gives me so much to
want. And I’m going to have some fun chasing after it.

[Link] Humanities point the way to answers about what is right or wrong, or what is true to our
heritage and our history.
[Link] Humanities embrace literature, languages, music, art, and even history and philosophy. In
broader sense, the humanities are concerned with the thoughts, creations, and actions of man in
the past and in the present.
[Link] Humanities impel us (men) to ask basic questions and to seek answers to them: Who am I?
Where have I come from? What is the meaning of life? What can I do to become and remain an
effective, responsible member of society.
[Link] humanities have to do with making man more human/humane. They are part of what we call
an INNER SPACE PROGRAM – to put men into their own hearts and minds.
The importance of the human being and his feelings and how he expresses those
feelings have always been the concern of humanities.
Human being is the basic subject of the Humanities.
Somewhere in the internet posted a reminder to everyone. It says – do not teach children to
be rich. Teach them instead to be happy. Genius and billionaire Bill Gates has a similar
reminder. He said, do not desire to be millionaire; it is overrated. The concern of the course
Humanities is not to pauper on the street or a rich man in his coach. It is the happiness to
every human being.
In the humanities, the student shall see what painters, sculptors, architects, poets,
playwrights, and movie makers have had to say about big questions such as: What is my
purpose on this earth? How should I get along with other human beings?
In this world of so much unfairness, in this world cruel to its people, in this world only few hearts
survive as the song says, everyone need solace. Everyone needs silence from the everyday
commotion. Everyone needs exit from his troubled heart, everyone needs happiness.
This happiness which everyone wants to have can be achieved out of nothing.
You do not need money to compose a song or to write poetry, novel or short story
The Humanities is needed to make man happy with his life. This
declaration was long ago affirmed by the great man in the field of Physics,
Albert Einstein. He said, “man must acquire a vivid sense of the beautiful
and of the morally good… He must learn to understand the motives of
human beings, their illusions and their sufferings, in order to acquire a
proper relationship to individual men and to the community.
Humanism, believes that MAN should be humanized, socialized and
educated to respond positively to rapid changes. …If a man is to live like a
human being, his heart and mind must be nourished. And the best spiritual
nourishment comes from the humanities.
"I think the environment should be put in the category of our national security. Defense of
our resources is just as important as defense abroad. Otherwise what is there to
defend?"
— Robert Redford
“Earth at its beginning
was for all in
common,
it was meant for rich
and poor alike;
what right have you to
monopolise the soil?
Nature knows nothing of
the rich;
all are poor when she
brings them forth.”
St Ambrose of Milan
Nature never hurries. Atom by atom, little
by little she
achieves her work.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
"True wisdom consists in not departing from
nature and in molding our conduct
according to her laws and model."
