Good Afternoon!
MODULE 1
LESSON 2
QUESTIONS
Are there forces acting on the ball?
What are these forces?
If there are forces acting on the ball, why is it that
the ball is not moving?
If we want to make this ball move, what force
should we apply to the object?
Force therefore can make objects remain at rest,
move, move faster or change its direction of motion.
But is this always the case?
Can force always bring about change in the state of
motion of an object?
Suppose two teams are playing tug-of-war as
shown in Figure 1. Each team is pulling with equal
magnitude of force, FA and FB , on the rope but in
opposite directions.
Question
1. Can each team make
the other team move?
Figure 1. A representation of
balanced forces in a tug-of-war
game.
Suppose that one of the teams in tug-of-war, as shown in figure 2, exerts
greater magnitude of force, FB, on the ground than the other team, the forces
applied on the ground would no longer be equal.
Question
1. Can each team
make the other
move?
Figure 2. A representation of
unbalanced forces in a tug-of-war
game.
LET’S EXPLORE
Perform Activity 2
Look and study the picture below.
2. Refer to the figure below.
Draw the forces acting on the block
of wood. Use the dot as the origin
of the forces.
Figure 17. A block of wood lying
on a table.
Questions:
1. Is the block of wood at
rest or in motion? _______________
Examine the pictures below:
FA - applied force on the rope by Team A FN – force exerted by the floor on the ball
FB - applied force on the rope by Team B Fg - force exerted by the Earth on the ball
Ff - opposite force in the direction of the
motion or frictional force
FAPPLIED – applied force on the ball
For question numbers 3-5, refer to
Figure 18.
3. If two groups in the game are exerting equal and opposite forces on the
rope, will the rope move?
_________________________________________________________
4. In the same condition, what happens to the net force acting on the rope?
_________________________________________________________
5. What are the forces present on the rope?
________________________________________________________
6. Refer to Figure 19. If you place a ball on the floor then push it gently to one
side, observe the motion of the ball as it rolls down the floor.
a. What makes the ball stop rolling after sometime?
______________________________________________________
b. What are the forces that act on the ball?
______________________________________________________
Examine the pictures below.
Fig 20. Unbalanced forces in a tug-of-war
Fig 21. A chandelier hangs on a chain.
For question numbers 7-8, refer to
figure 20.
7. If two groups in the game are exerting unequal and
opposite forces on the ground, will the rope move?
______________________________________________________________
8. Will the net force be equal to zero?
______________________________________________________________
9. To what direction does the rope move?
______________________________________________________________
For question numbers 10 – 12, refer to figure
21.
10. Are the forces acting on the chandelier
unbalanced?
______________________________________________________
11. What force can cause the chandelier to fall?
______________________________________________________
12. What type of force is your answer in number 10?
______________________________________________________
What are two things you must know
to describe force?
Forces can be describe through
its size or strength (magnitude)
and direction.
Balanced Forces
Ifthe forces acting on the object
are equal in magnitude, in
opposite directions and they lie
along the same line of action.
UNBALANCED FORCED
if the forces acting on the
object do not cancel each
other.
LET’S REVIEW
1. What are two things you must know to
describe force?
2. What can balanced forces do to the
amount of change in the motion of an
object?
3. What can unbalanced forces do to the
amount of change in the motion of an
object?
Place a ball on the desk then push it
gently to one side. Observe the motion
of the ball as it rolls down the desk.
What makes the ball stop rolling after
sometime?
Ifthe object is already in motion, how
will the unbalanced force affects its
motion?
Fillin the blanks with the
correct word/s. Write your
answer on a separate sheet
of paper.
1. _________ are forces equal in magnitude but
opposite in direction.
2. __________ are forces that cause a change in
the motion of an object.
3. __________ and 4. _____________ are two
things you must know to describe force.
5. If the forces acting in an object are balanced,
the state of motion of the object is _________.
6. The sum of all forces acting in an object is
called__________.
7.If the forces acting in an object are
unbalanced, the state of motion of the object
is _________.
8. If the forces acting in an object are
balanced, the net force is _________.
9. If the forces acting in an object are
unbalanced, the net force is _________.
