Anti Obesity Effects of P.

. guajava on Obese Induced Rats Connie Jesse Anyi 2009710617 Supervisor: PM Dr Hjh Farida Zuraina Hj Mohd Yusof

Introduction
Obesity is a nutritional disorder resulted from excessive accumulation of adipose that may impair health if it is not control. Causes of obesity is due to genetic and environmental factor. Obesity is a strong factor that cause type 2 diabetes which related to insulin resistance of human. Most common risk that leads to diseases such as cardiovascular problem, menstrual problem and hypertension.

Psidium guajava

Known as pink guava or jambu batu

Tropical fruit from the family of Myrtaceae which often found in a tropical countries (Burkill et al., 1997).

Often used as food, juice and folk medicine. Lately, there are many research has been done on its bark, roots, and fruits (Romeo et al 1997).
This study will determine how P.guajava will treat obesity in obese induced rats.

Literature Review

Studies done on the leaves indicated that it's aqueous extract have anti hyperglycemic and hyperlipidemic effect on type II diabetes patient. Ingestion of guava leaf tea will reduce the blood glucose level and total cholesterol (Deguchi & Miyazaki, 2010). It is also a good source of fiber that contribute to the use of its fruit as anti diarrhea by relaxing the smooth muscle of intestine. Its fruit puree has been confirmed to have anti hypertensive properties and has lipid lowering effect on high fat diet induced rats (Ayub et al., 2010 ) and anti inflammatory properties (Murugadan et al., 2010).

Problem Statement
Malaysia is one Asian country that possess the highest number of obese communities compared to other Asian country and obesity is the highest cause that leads to death in Asia. (world health organization)

Obesity affect both children and adults medical health and mental.(Braet et al. 2005)
The use of drug in treating obesity has adverse effects in some individual and the use of plant medicine in treating obesity is still new.

Significance of Study
There is less study focusing on the leaf of P. guajava. Many research done are focusing more to the puree of this local fruit. The importance of the leaf can be seen through the usage of P. guajava leaf as traditional medicine mainly in South East Asia. Gives the insight on how obesity in human can be reduced by using safer and traditional way rather than surgery or drugs.

Objectives

To determine the effects of P.guajava leaf extract on the body weight of obese induced rats. To determine the effects of P.guajava on the blood pressure of obese induced rats. To determine the effects of P.guajava on blood glucose level and lipid profile of obese induced rats.

Data Analysis

Statistical analysis
1. Correlation and regression will be use to see the relationship between different concentration of P.guajava leaf extract and: body weight of obese induce rats blood pressure of obese induce rats blood glucose level of obese induce rats 2. One way ANOVA To compare means of different groups
