CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF STUDY
The title of this thesis is Analisis Fungsi Bahasa dalam Artikel Opini pada koran The Jakarta Post. The research belongs to the study of Discourse Analysis, one of studies which emphasized on how the ideological significance of news is part and parcel of the methods used to process news. As a well spoken creature, human represents their mind through language. This means that, mind is using language as an instrument of expression. Therefore, theres very tight relation between language and thought. Some people considered that language has an imposing power which sharper than the knife. In which with its power, language may control the world. This is also understood in the philosophy of language which said that the people create the reality or the real form of life and organized through language. Language in one of tangible form can be as a discourse.

Discourse is a recording of intact language about the phenomenon of communication that occurs between the individual/group with others individual/group in social dynamics. The discourse analysis is the analysis of language in use. Consequently, its not limited as a form of linguistics description which separated from the connection among humans. On the contrary, the creativity of discursive practices has a particular role and function in composing and maintaining the social relationship. The utilizing of language had a sense more than to exchange the merely information, but also contains of certain aim and purpose that implied by the existence of the functions language capacity.

Thus in this research, the writer pushed to carry out the analysis toward the function of language aspects in the discourse. All of which can be obtained from the opinion article in The Jakarta Post newspaper. The opinion article is one form of written discourse which is giving the space and freedom to the people to express and serve their idea or concepts. Through these opinion articles, the writer can dig up the information about how the speaker constructs the communication by involving the use of functions language. Accordingly, through this research it is expected to increase our knowledge about the function of language aspects in the opinion article.

RESEARCH PROBLEM
The focus of this research is: 1. To find out the function of language that is more dominant than the others on each opinion article in The Jakarta Post newspaper. 2. To understand the messages which intended by the speaker in those opinion articles.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Through the Discourse Analysis, we can get a more comprehensive insight of media in the form of discourse with detail perspective. This approach give a certain contribution toward the analyzing of messages in media which then made a completely research to other approach such as content analysis. Content Analysis as the quantitative method involved the counting and totaling the phenomenon, can be used to support the qualitative studies in discourse analysis. It means that content analysis enable to deliver the facts as an objective argumentation.

If in the content analysis, the question is emphasize to answer what from the text communication. In the other hand, the discourse analysis is more directed to look at how, that is how the content of news text and how the content of messages conveyed. Discourse Analysis is a research that applies scientifically in the written and spoken form. Its giving a basic theory and method to analyze the dynamic discursive practices, which became a place for the speaker/writer to act as producer in reproduction and transformation of discourse and also in the social and culture changes.

In the communication process with discourse as a medium, the addressor conveys the messages in a form of thought, feeling, or desires which become the meaning of language to be delivered to the addressee as a commission. Therefore, the purpose of the presentation of discourse is to convey the information and also to arouse the feeling. Language has very extremely vital functions for our life. Therere several kinds of perspective from the experts related to these function of language. Roman Jakobson has proposed the function of language into six basic components in the affair of communication.

There are: 1. Emotive, closely associated with the source or speaker, serves a psychological function and is seen most readily in speech used to express the feelings, attitudes, or emotions of the speaker. 2. Phatic, creates social relationship referred to as phatic communion. Phatic cant be interpreted literally; rather, its meaning rests in great part on the immediate and specific communication situation. The greeting How are you? is in most situation phatic. The speaker doesnt expect or want the listener to tell him how he actually feels, but rather is merely saying hello. Another way of looking at this function is as whose purpose is to keep the channels of communication open and in good working order. Logically, this function is oriented to the channel.

3. Referential/Cognitive, makes reference to the real world and is frequently referred to as referential, denotative, or informative. 4. Conative/Rhetorical also referred to as directive, is probably the most complex of all the functions. Rhetorical seeks to direct or influence thought and behavior. Its the language of clergy, of the politician, and of the salesman. It is the speech of persuasion and associated most directly with the receiver. 5.Metalingual is used to talk not about the objects and events in the real but about speech it self. Its a higher order or more abstract and is oriented to the code of communication.

6. Poetic serves to structure the messages, to which it has its primary orientation, so that it may be more appealing from an aesthetic point of view or more distinctive.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH OBJECT & METHOD

The material of this research was taken from the opinion article in The Jakarta Post newspaper. The writer uses the article in period from July 2-15, 2011 (Vol. 29 No. 066 Vol. 29 No. 079). The number of article consists of ten, including several kind of articles which relate to education, social, politic, economy, and technology. The writer chose the qualitative research method as the technique that emphasized to a natural side and grounded at the character which contains in the data. The qualitative research has basic differences than quantitative research. The quantitative problem is more general, having a large range in characteristic, and the complex variation level which located in the surface. In other hand, the qualitative problem is located in the limited space with the low variation level, but has an unlimited depth of studies.

In this research, the writer took some steps of analysis which started by organizing the information in the objects, read the whole of those information and giving a code, making the detail explanation about the case and its context, determining the pattern and find out the connection among the several categories. Finally, the writer describing an interpretation and improve the natural generalization.

CHAPTER IV & V

From the tenth of opinion articles, which the title i.e.: 1) School choice: Do parents really choose schools? by Zulfa Sakhiyya. 2) Comics invade Indonesian religious schools by Dewi Wijayanti. 3) Challenging opportunity for aging population by Robert Fletcher. 4) Whole woman in tune with men, in peace with own nature by Giovanni Comparini. 5) Indonesia must abolish death penalty, show mercy by Frans H. Winarta & Colin McDonald QC

Haridh. 8) Closer economic integration in ASEAN and beyond by Anwar Nasution. 9) iPad case and the issue of manuals by Muhammad Tsani Annafari. 10) Samsung laptop tackles Apples Air by Rich Jaroslovsky. 6) The writer found that the referential and emotive function is more dominant than the others.

For example, we can study from the article School choice: Do parents really choose schools? in which the emotive function is more dominant, while in Comics invade Indonesian religious schools, is more dominant in referential function. In other hand, we can see that sometimes there are appear the proportion of these two kinds of function at comparable scale, such as in article Challenging opportunity for aging population and Indonesia must abolish death penalty, show mercy. The integrity of messages which convey were seems to rely on the using of its function of language. More lively the writer involves the variation of language function, its more sturdy the messages can we get.
