What is Hazardous
Material?
A material or waste with
properties that make it
dangerous or capable of
having a harmful effect
on human health and /
or the environment.
Can be immediate,
short-term or long-term
risks.

RESPONSIBILITY OF SUPERVISORS:
● Submit SDS (Safety Data Sheets) and keep copy with products on
site (Storage & work area).
• Definition: A solid,
Flammab liquid or gas that will
le ignite and continue to
burn if exposed to
flame.
• Examples: Propane,
gasoline, solvents,
aluminum dust, paints.
• Prevention: Avoid
ignition sources,
properly ground
containers, and use
correct PPE.
Hazardous Materials Symbols
• Definition: These
materials may react
Corrosiv with metals or living
e tissue on contact. May
irritate or burn skin,
eyes, or lungs on
contact or over a long
period of exposure.
• Examples: Acids,
alkalis, bleach,
batteries.
• Prevention: Avoid skin
contact and protect
your eyes and face by
wearing PPE.
Hazardous Materials Symbols
• Definition: These
materials may react if
Reactiv dropped, shaken,
heated, put under
e pressure, or may
release a poisonous
gas if exposed to
water. Serious health
risk if gas is inhaled or
material explodes.
• Examples: Epoxy
resin, sodium metal,
acetylene.
• Prevention: Avoid
spilling material and
contaminating your
skin or clothing.
Hazardous Materials Symbols
• Definition: An
Biohazar organism or its toxins
d that may cause
serious infectious
disease, illness, or
death.
• Examples of
Hazardous
Materials: Anthrax,
Medical Waste such as
infected blood or body
fluid, dressings and
syringes.
• Prevention: Avoid
Hazardous Materials Symbols
Definition:
• A compressed gas remains gaseous at -50°C and
may include:
• Liquefied gas: A gas stored at > 29 psi and is
partially liquid at temperatures above -50°C .
Compressed Gases • Dissolved gas: A gas dissolved in a liquid solvent at
> 29 psi
Examples:
• Compressed gas: Nitrogen, argon, helium, oxygen,
hydrogen
• Liquefied gas: Chlorine, carbon dioxide, nitrous
oxide, dichlorane, hydrogen bromide
• Dissolved gas in Solution: Acetylene
Prevention:
One of the common hazards to all compressed gases is
the substantial volume expansion that occurs when
they are released into the air. For its storage we need:
• Well ventilated and secured room/ container
• Proper chains & stacking positioning
• Segregation of hazardous & dangerous gas
Hazardous Materials Symbols
● Definition:
Oxidizers are materials that
spontaneously evolve oxygen at
Oxidizers room temperature or with slight
heating or promote combustion.
● Examples:
Nitrates, nitric acid, bromine, chlorates,
chromates, inorganic peroxides etc.
● Prevention:
Oxidizers should be stored in a
cool and dry location. Segregate
oxidizers from all other
chemicals. Minimize the
quantities of strong oxidizers.

WORKPLACE LABELS
1. Product Identifier
3. SDS Statement
Source Reduction
• Material elimination
• Inventory control and
management
• Material substitution
• Reduction of consumption
• Process modification
• Improved housekeeping
Hazardous Materials Inventory
• Ensure all containers are properly labelled with name of the material / waste,
date of generation and its designation.
• Ensure all materials/waste are property packed and contained with spacing
between containers for inspection and emergency exit.
• Inspect storage areas regularly for leakages or corrosion.
• Ensure no waste containers are overflowing.
• Do not mix different liquids or chemicals unless
specifically told to do so.
• All hazardous material containers will be clearly labeled
with the material being stored and the date of
accumulation.
• Provide safety equipment at storage facility including
“Spill kit, Eye wash station & Emergency Shower, Fire
Control Equipment, and specific PPE Box (containing
gloves, apron & goggles).
Storage of Hydrocarbons
