CLIQUE

DEFINITION
A clique is an exclusive group of people who share common interests, views, purposes, patterns of behavior, or ethnicity. Clique can include people meeting for social and academic purpose. The common conception of a clique is selfish and arrogant group that excludes other people from their activities.

Types of cliques

Horizontal clique:

Horizontal cliques, or informal groups of similar organizational rank who work in close proximity.

Vertical clique:

Vertical cliques, or groups containing various ranks within the same department

HORIZONTAL CLIQUES
1.Horizontal Defensive Clique. 2.Horizontal Aggressive Clique

VERTICAL CLIQUES
1.Vertical Symbiotic Clique 2.Vertical Parasitic Clique

Random Clique
These cliques cross hierarchical and department boundaries, and members share more friendship and social relations than formal goals. y These people are often not in functional cliques. The random cliques intensify informal activities in the plant.

ADVANTAGES OF CLIQUES

People form friendships based on common values and beliefs. People can identify with those who are most like them. Sense of comfort and acceptance. Relationships are an important source of energy renewal.

DISADVANTAGES OF CLIUES
Cliques can impact effective workplace relationships. Specifically, y Cliques contribute to jealousy. y Cliques can represent exclusion. y Cliques create a tribal mentality or blind spots. y Lags communication with others.
