Meaning
A printer is an output device that produces text and graphics on a physical medium such as paper. Many printers are primarily used as local peripherals, and are attached by a printer cable, or USB cable to a computer. In addition, a few modern printers can directly interface to electronic media.

Types of Printers
Printer can be grouped into impact and non-impact printers. An Impact printer forms characters and graphics on a piece of paper by striking a mechanism against an ink ribbon that physically contacts the paper. A non-impact printer forms character and graphics on a piece of paper without actually striking the paper.
5
Dot-matrix printer is an impact printer that produces text and graphics when tiny wire pins on the print head strike the ink ribbon. The print head runs back and forth on the paper like a typewriter.
9 pins / 24 pins
Inkjet printers
A type of printer that works by spraying ionized ink at a sheet of paper. Magnetized plates in the ink's path direct the ink onto the paper in the desired shapes. A typical ink-jet printer provides a resolution of 300 dots per inch.
50 nozzles
1 to 12 ppm
Inkjet printers
Advantages: Low cost & Easy to use and reasonably fast. High quality of output, capable of printing fine and smooth details. Disadvantages: Print head is less durable, prone to clogging and damage Expensive replacement ink cartridges. Printing speed is not as fast as laser printer.

Laser printers
Laser printers are non-impact printers which can print text and images in high speed and high quality resolution, ranging from 600 to 1200 dpi. Laser printer use toner (black or colored powder) instead of liquid inks. A type of printer that utilizes a laser beam to produce an image on a drum.
10
Laser printer
The light of the laser alters the electrical charge on the drum wherever it hits.
Finally, the toner is transferred to the paper through a combination of heat and pressure.
11
Laser printers
Advantages: High resolution and speed. Low cost per page. Good for high volume printing. Disadvantages: More expensive than inkjet printers. Warm up time needed. Except for high end machines, laser printers are capable of printing vivid colors and high quality image such as photos.
12
Thermal printers: The heat that activates the thermosensitive coloring layer of the thermosensitive paper, which manifests a pattern of color change in response. Photo printers: Are color printers that produce photo lab quality pictures on photo paper.
13
All in one machine: It is a machine that includes several functionalities including printer, scanner, copier and fax. Dye sublimation printer: It employs a printing process that uses heat to transfer dye on to a medium such as plastic card, paper or fabric.
