INTRODUCTION
y Mean is defined as the value obtained by taking the

sum of all the observations of the given data and dividing the resulting sum by the total number of observation. y Median is the value of set of values is the middle one when they are arranged in order.

Mean
Definition: The mean is the arithmetic average of a set of numbers, or distribution.

MEDIAN
The median is described as the numeric value separating the higher half of a sample, a population, or a probability distribution, from the lower half.

Applicability:

The mean is used for normal distributions.

The median is generally used for skewed distributions.

Robustness:

The mean is not a robust tool since it is largely influenced by outliers.

The median is better suited for skewed distributions to derive at central tendency since it is much more robust and sensible.

Expression:

The mean of a set of numbers x1, There is usually no accepted x2, ..., xn is usually denoted by x bar. standard symbol for Median. It is popularly denoted by the letter m.

MERITS OF MEAN
y Clear and precise y Stable measure y Suitable for algebraic manipulations y Useful measure in advanced study of statistics

DEMERITS OF MEAN
y Cannot be represented graphically y If one of the observation in data is missing , the mean

cannot be computed. y May be affected by the presence of unduly large and small observations in the data. y Cannot be found incase frequency distribution is of open-ended classes

MERITS OF MEDIAN
y Definition is easy to understand and computation is

simple. y Not affected by unduly large and small data. y Can be determined graphically. y Appropriate measure when the frequency distribution has open-ended classes.

DEMERITS OF MEDIAN
y When total no. of observation of data is even, the

mean of the values of two observations located in the middle is taken as the median of the data. This is nothing but a compromise to find the median. Computations does not involve all observations. Not suitable for algebraic manipulation In continuous frequency distribution, the value of median is approximate. When data is large, it is cumbersome to arrange in numerical order.

12, 15, 11, 11, 7, 13

First, arrange the data in numerical order. Then find the number in the middle or the average of the two numbers in the middle. 11 + 12 = 23 23 / 2 = 11.5

7, 11, 11, 12, 13, 15

The median is 11.5

An electronics store sells CD players at the following prices: $350, $275, $500, $325, $100, $375, and $300. What is the mean price?

$350 + $275 + $500 + $325 + $100 +$375 + $300 =

$2225 $2225 / 7 = $317.86

The mean or average price of a CD player is $317.86.
