GEOMETRICAL CONSTRUCTIONS

SKILL 1: To construct regular n-sided polygons, where 3n10.

Activity A: An equilateral triangle of

side 3cm

1. Draw a line PQ of length 3 cm

2. Construct an arc 3 cm from P by using a pair of compasses

3.

Construct an arc 3cm from Q to intersect the first arc at R

4. Draw the line PR and QR. An equilateral triangle is formed

Activity B: A square of side 4cm

ACTIVITY C: A PENTAGON (With 5 sided)

1. A regular pentagon has five equal sides. Each angle at the centre

2. Draw a circle with centre O and radius OP.

3. Use a protractor to divide the circle into five equal sectors, each with an angle of 72

4. Connect PQ, QR, RS, ST and TP with straight lines to obtain a regular pentagon.

ACTIVITY D: A REGULAR HEXAGON WITH SIDES 3CM

1. Draw a circle of radius 3 cm. Mark a point on the circumference.

2. Construct an arc 3 cm from A to intersect the circumference of the circle at B.

3. Construct arcs C, D, E and F that are equidistant by using the same method.

4. Draw the lines AB, BC, CD, DE, EF and FA to form a regular hexagon of side 3 cm.

SKILL 2: To determine the relationship between central angle and number of sides of an regular polygon

Polygon central angle

central angle

Conclusion: To find the central angle of an polygon , we use this formulae: Central angle here means angle that situated at the centre of a polygon like shown in every diagram. Therefore the more the number of sides of an polygon, the smaller the value of its central angle.

SKILL 3: To explore the relationship between sum of interior angle of a polygon and its number of sides

Polygon

Number of sides 3 4 5 6 7 8

Number of triangles 1 2 3 4 5 6

Sum of interior angle 1x180=180 2x180=360 3x180=540 4x180=720 5x180=900 6x180=1080

One of interior angle 180 3= 60 360 4=90 540 5=108 720 6=120 900 7=129 1080 8=135

Triangle Quadrilateral Pentagon Hexagon Heptagon Octagon

Conclusion: 1.The sum of the interior angle of a polygon with n sides is (n-2)x180. 2.Therefore the more the number of sides of a polygon, the bigger the sum of its interior angle. 3.

SKILL 4: To construct 2-D composite shapes.

Below is the combination of 2D shapes that arrange to become a cat

circle
