TECNIQUES & EXERCISE USED IN TEAM BUILDING

A number of techniques and exercises are used in team building to facilitate team performance and to address specific problematic issues.

ROLE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE / PROCESS :The role analysis technique (RAT or RAP) is designed to clarify role expectations & obligations of team members to improve team effectiveness. This technique is applicable to only new teams, but it may also be helpful in established teams where role ambiguity or confusions exists.

INTERDEPENDENCY EXERCISE :It is a useful intervention if team members have expressed a desire to improve cooperation among themselves & among their units. This exercise is also useful for assisting people in getting better acquainted, in surfacing problems that may be latent & not previously examined, & in providing useful information about current challenges being faced in others areas of responsibility.

A ROLE NEGOTIATION TECHNIQUE :

This technique is developed by Roger Harrison. The technique is basically an imposed structure for controlled negotiations between parties in which each party agrees in writing to change certain behaviors in return for changes in behavior of the other. The behaviors relate to the job.

Harrison states that the technique is based on the assumption: Most people prefer a fair negotiated settlement to a sense of unresolved conflict, & they are willing to invest some time and make some concessions in order to achieve a solution. The role negotiation technique usually takes at least one day to conduct.

THE APPRECIATIONS & CONCERNS EXERCISE :It may be appropriate if interview data suggests that one of the deficiencies in the intervention of members of a group is lack of expression of appreciation, & that another deficiency is the avoidance of confronting concerns & irritations.
