Introduction-:
H.R.M. plays important role in the success of an organization. It deals with the most important resource of an organization. Human resources / employees play an important role in the success of an organization. HRM contributes largely in acquiring, developing , rewarding & optimizing human resources for the organization.

HRM as a strategic approach to the management of people who are considered the most valued assets of the organization & are working there for the attainment of its goals individually & collectively. -: Armstrong , (Handbook of Human Resource Management Practice)

Human Resource Management is a set of inter related policies with an ideological & philosophical underpinning -: Storey (1989) Human Resource Management is also a management function concerned with hiring , motivating & maintaining people in an organization. It focuses on people in organizations -: Aswathappa (4th edition)

Nature-: 1. HRM is concerned with managing people at work-:To achieve goals in systematic order, Give results or achieve goals without any complaints or excuses 2. HRM is concerned with employees & their performance-: both individuals as well as groups 3. HRM is concerned with helping employees to develop their potentialities, capacities to maximum extent-: by motivating them.

4. Not confined to one particular industry but useful to all industries -: HRM is equally essential for all types of organizations (NGOs, Govt. organizations etc), not restricted to corporate industry. 5. HRM is continuous in nature-: ongoing process, never static. Ever changing. 6. HRM attempts at getting the willing cooperation of people for attainment of desired goals-: by hook or crook, manipulate, motivate, cajole, threaten, request, help but get things done.

Objectives-: According to Cascio, HRM has 2 objectives 1) The Broad Objective-: the broad objective of HRM is to optimize the usefulness of all workers in the organization. 2) The Special Objective-: the special objective of HRM department is to help line managers to manage workers effectively.

According to Aswathappa, HRM objectives are Four fold objectives, The primary objective of HRM is to ensure the availability of a component & willing workforce to an organization. 1. Societal objective-: To be ethically & socially responsible to the needs & challenges of the society while minimizing the negative impact of such demands upon the organization. Organizational objective-: To recognize the role of HRM in bringing about organizational effectiveness.Supportive functions-HR Planning, Employee relation, selection, training & development, appraisal, placement, Assessment. 3. Functional objective-: To maintain departments contribution at a level appropriate to the organizations needs.Supportive functionsAppraisal, Placement, Assessment

4. Personal objective-: To assist employees in achieving their personal goals, at least insofar as these goals enhance the individuals contribution to the organization.Supportive functions- Training & Development, Appraisal, Placement, Compensation, Assessment.

HRM plays an important role in recruitment, selection, placement, replacement etc. HRM designs, develops, introduces, directs & evaluates the HRD programmes HRM develops & maintains an effective communication system / Mediator between employer & employees.
