INTRODUCTION
y SWOT analysis is used in the evaluation of strengths, weakness,

opportunities, threats involved in a project or business venture. y It includes identification of internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve the business objective. y SWOT analysis is a strategic planning model which includes identification of: y Strengths: Involves identification of advantages over others in the industry. y Weakness: Involves disadvantages of the firm in relation to others in the industry. y Opportunities: Involves external chances to make greater sales or profits in the environment. y Threats: Involves external elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business.

y Looks at your company s strengths. y Builds on weaknesses. y Covers the opportunities available. y Captures the threats and defends against it. y SWOT analysis aims at identification of internal and external

factors important for the achievement of organizational objectives.

USE OF SWOT ANALYSIS


y The usefulness of SWOT analysis is not limited to profit

seeking organizations. y SWOT analysis offers many advantages like:  Helps in decision making.  Helps in pre-crisis planning and preventive crisis management.  It may also be used in creating recommendation during the viability study/survey.

SWOT ANALYSIS IN MARKETING MANAGEMENT


y In many competitor analyses, marketers build detailed

profiles of each competitor in the market, focusing especially on their relative competitive strengths and weaknesses using SWOT Analysis. y Marketing managers will examine:  Cost structure.  Sources of profit.  Resources and competencies.  Competitive positioning.  Historical responses to industry developments.

y Marketing Management finds it necessary to invest in research to

collect the data to perform accurate marketing analysis. y Marketers employ variety of techniques to conduct market research, but some of the more common include:  Qualitative techniques.  Quantitative techniques.  Experimental techniques.  Observational techniques.

Marketing Managers may also design and oversee various environmental scanning and competitive intelligence processes to help identify trends and inform the company s marketing analysis.

SIMPLE RULES FOR SUCCESSFUL SWOT ANALYSIS.


y Be realistic about the strengths and weaknesses of your y y y y

organization while conducting SWOT analysis. Clear distinction between the present and the future. Must be very specific. Avoid grey areas. Always apply SWOT in relation to your competition i.e. better than or worse than your competition. SWOT should be short and simple. Avoid complexity and over analysis.

NOKIA CORPORATION
y It is one of the world s largest telecommunications

equipment manufacturers. y The business of NOKIA has expanded considerably in all areas to support customer needs and the growth of telecommunication industry. y NOKIA also produces mobile phone infrastructure and telecommunications equipments. y NOKIA provides mobile communication equipment for every major market and protocol, including GSM,CDMA.

STRENGTHS:
y Largest network of distribution and selling as compared to y y y y y y

other mobile phone company in the world. Backed with high quality and professional team in the HRD Dept. Financial aspect is very strong as it has many more businesses. Product is very user friendly. It has all the accessories one wants making it no-1 selling mobile phones in the world. Wide range of products for all class. Re-sell value of NOKIA phones are high compared to other company s product.

WEAKNESSES:
y Price of the product offered by the company. y Some of the products are not user friendly. y Not targeting towards promotion amongst the lower class of

the society. y Service centers in INDIA are very few and scarce so after sales service is not that good.

OPPORTUNITIES:
y NOKIA has ample opportunities to expand its business. y Due to the wide range of products, features, different price

range for different people, it has an advantage over the competitors around. y With the opportunity like Telecom penetration in India being at the peak time, Nokia has an opportunity to increase its sales as well as the market share. y Due to the increase in standard of living of people in increased. y Targeting right customer at the right time will help in gaining the most out of the situation.

THREATS:
y Emergence of other mobile companies in the market.

Companies like Motorola, Sony Ericsson etc. y Provision of cheap phones, new style, attractive features at low cost, good after sales service by the competitors. y Growing competition in the global market. y Growing demand of WLL network can cause drop in sales for NOKIA, as NOKIA provides many less CDMA phones to the customer.

y SWOT analysis is a strategic planning model which helps in

analyzing the present and predict the future. y SWOT analysis may be used to access : y A company y A brand y A product y A business idea y An option of entering into new venture y Opportunity to make an acquisition y Potential partnership y Changing a supplier y Outsourcing a services, activity y Investment opportunity

y SWOT analysis is not undertaken by only profit y y y y

seeking organizations. Marketing managers perform SWOT analysis by applying various techniques. Hence SWOT analysis is undertaken to improve the competitive position of the firm in the market. It acts a scale to measure the ranking of the company to its competitors. Every business whether small or big should undertake a SWOT analysis so as to make the venture successful.
