JOINT VARIATION

MATH 9
Joint Variation
a type of variation that involves direct relationship of more than
two quantities; almost similar to direct variation but differ on the
number of quantities involved; that is, if any of the independent
variables increase or decrease, the dependent variable also
increases or decreases respectively.

Example:

The area of a triangle varies jointly as the base and

height since the area will increase or decrease if any of
the base or height increases or decreases respectively.

varies jointly as x and z” is

PROBLEMS ON JOINT VARIATION

1.) If m varies jointly as b and n and m=12

when b=5 and n=2, find m when b=10 and
n=3.
2.) If varies jointly as and , and when
and , find when and .
3.) Kinetic energy () varies jointly as the mass
() and square of velocity (). A moving object
with a mass of
8 grams and a velocity of 5 cm/s has a kinetic
energy of 100 joules. Find the kinetic energy for
an object with a mass of 6 grams and a velocity
of 9 cm/s.

4.) The force of the wind F blowing on a vertical

wall varies jointly as the surface area of the wall
and the square of the wind velocity. If a wind of
20 mph has a force of 100 pounds on a wall
with an area of 50 ,what force will a wind of 40
