OXIDATION
General introduction of oxidation
Oxidation of aldehydes
Oxidation of ketones
Oxidation of carboxylic acid
Oxidation of amines
oxidation
Oxidation of an organic compound is defined as
addition of oxygen, removal of hydrogen or removal
of electrons from that compound.
O
Addition of oxygen - R-CHO R-COOH
- 2H
Removal of hydrogen- R-CH2OH R-CHO
Aldehydes are readily oxidised to
carboxylic acid by a number of reagents
such as chromic acid and permanganate.
Oxidation of carboxylic acids - oxidative
level of carbon in three and maximum
oxidation level of carbon is in carbon
dioxide. Thus carboxylic acids on oxidation
will always give carbon dioxide. Due to
this reason the oxidation of carboxylic
acids is known as oxidative
decarboxylation.
