Overview of the Nervous System

The nervous system connects body parts and transmits signals, consisting of the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS includes the brain and spinal cord, while the PNS contains all nerves outside the CNS, further divided into the somatic and autonomic systems. Neurons are the basic units of the nervous system, transmitting impulses and facilitating responses to stimuli through neurotransmitters.

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

-connects all your body parts and transmits signals from one
part to another
-system of cells, tissues, and organs that regulates body
responses to internal and external stimuli.
-there are 2 major divisions
1. central nervous system (CNS)

THE - main processing center

-controls the entire organ system

NERVOUS -composed of the brain and spinal cord

2. peripheral nervous system (PNS)

SYSTEM -contains all the nerves outside the brain

and the spinal chord
-2 DIVISIONS a. somatic nervous system
b. autonomic nervous
system- sympathetic or
parasympathetic

1.How will you differentiate the CNS and the PNS in
terms of their functions?
2.What might happen to the human body if one part of
the nervous system fails to carry out its function
properly?
THE NERVE CELL OR NEURON
-basic unit of the nervous system
-carries impulses to the nervous system.
-There are 12 to 14 billions of neurons in one
part of the brain alone.
• A neuron is composed of the following parts:
dendrites, nucleus, cell body, axon,
nodes of Ranvier, myelin sheath cells and
Classification of Neurons

1.Sensory or affective neurons carry impulses from

the sense organs to the brain and spinal cord.
2. Motor or effective neurons carry impulses from
the brain and spinal cord to the muscles.
3. Associative neurons, located in the CNS,
analyze and interpret the data or impulses.
How is a message transported?

• A nerve impulse cannot jump from one neuron to another. When a nerve
impulse comes to the end of an axon, it produces the chemical called
neurotransmitter, to be released. The chemical crosses the space between
neurons called synapses and stimulates the nerve impulse to start in the
next dendrite.
• The nervous system is assisted by five sense organs – the eyes, ears,
nose, tongue and skin. These sense organs are constantly receiving
information from the environment and sending messages to the brain. These
senses aid in the survival of human beings. A stimulus is any factor in the
environment that may trigger a nerve impulse. A response is a reaction to a
stimulus. A stimulus is received by the body and a response is made. An
organism must be able to respond to a stimulus in order to survive.
