The Great Depression


The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression in the decade preceding World War II. It was the longest, most widespread, and deepest depression of the 20th century. The Great Depression had devastating effects in virtually every country, rich and poor. Some economies started to recover by the mid-1930s. In many countries, the negative effects of the Great Depression lasted until the start of World War II.[

Powell, Jr. was born Nov. 29, 1908, in New Haven, Conn. B.A. from Colgate University in 1930 M.A. from Columbia University in 1932. Pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church and built up its

membership to 13,000 people. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat from Harlem. He served 11 successive terms in the House and became chairman of its Education and Labor Committee in 1960.

As chairman of the powerful Education and Labor Committee he

expanded the minimum wage to include retail workers and worked for equal pay for women.
He was also put in charge of welfare programs in its first years. Powell was instrumental in passing legislation that made lynching a

federal crime.
He urged presidential policymakers to pay attention to nations seeking

independence from colonial powers and support aid to them.
