Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

World War II
World War II was a worldwide conflict that divided almost every country into two separate military forces, the Axis powers and the Allied powers. During this time, the Nazis were also on a quest to exterminate the Jews at the behest of Adolf Hitler. The war lasted from 1939 to 1945, and was incredibly bloody, with 50 million cumulative casualties (Robinson).

Churchill was born in Oxfordshire on November 30th, 1874. Churchill went to the Royal Military College and served in India and the Sudan. He became home secretary in 1911, but resigned due to failures related to WWI. He became prime minister in 1940 and led Europe against the Nazis. Churchill died on January 24th, 1965 (BBC).

Churchill played a small role in WWI. He also, obviously, led Europe against the Nazis in WWII; his refusal to back down was a large source of morale. Churchill also wrote a large number of books (mostly biographies) and won the Nobel Prize in Literature (Frenz).

Quote: Do not let spacious plans for a new world divert your energies from saving what is left of the old. Interpretation: Although what lies ahead is new and exciting, you should always focus on what you have now instead of what you have later. Quote: I have never developed indigestion from eating my words. Interpretation: He has never felt ashamed of anything that he has said. Quote: It is no use saying, 'We are doing our best.' You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary. Interpretation: It doesn t matter if you do your best, all you must do is what is asked of you and nothing else.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his numerous publications, ranging from biographies to recounts of his war experiences.

Churchill was awarded honorary United States citizenship and a temporary role as the commodore of squadron 615; he also received wings for his service He published a great many books, ranging from The Story of the Malakand Field Force (a recount of his campaign in the Northwest Frontier) to Savrola (a novel)
