Nonverbal Codes
A nonverbal code is the different means used to transmit information nonverbally There are eight different codes
Kinescs Voclics Haptics Proxemics Chronemics Physical appearance Artifacts Environment

Haptics
This is more commonly know as touch The smallest casual touch conveys information during an interpersonal encounter I have power over you
A strong handshake or a aggressive overpowering touch

Proxemics
Or know as communication through physical space To appear in power one would stand between social and public space
5 to 13 feet

Lean into the conversation to cast a shadow on others would show power

Chronemics
The way one uses time in interpersonal encounters People in power are normally M-time oriented
Value scheduled conversations since time is valuable To busy to be concerned with nonsense

Clothing

In the military uniform or clothing attire presents the status of power and privilege. A conservative or formal uniform for civilian counterparts may also represent this status.

Physical Appearance
In todays world people are judged on their physical appearance. A person attractiveness can determine the title or job position that they are applying for. Physically attractive people are presumed by some to be well educated, successful and powerful. As shown in picture, causal or formal dress is how we would describe some styles of physical appearance.

Artifacts/Objects
The things we possess that influence how we see ourselves and that we use to express our identity to others.

By displaying expensive jewelry and elaborate modes of transportation (like this royal float), the Pharaoh Xerxes was able to tell others that he had power over them.

Environment

Our environment envelops us, shapes our communication, and implies certain things about us. First class seating, such as on this airplane, offer superior comfort and service to those who can afford it.
