Implicit Differentiation Explained

The document discusses implicit differentiation, explaining the difference between explicitly and implicitly defined functions. It highlights that while some equations can be solved for one variable in terms of another, many cannot, necessitating the use of implicit differentiation techniques. Several examples are provided to illustrate finding derivatives and tangent lines for implicitly defined functions.

4 The Implicit Differentiation

Most of the functions we have dealt with so far have been described
by an equation of the form

ie. Express y explicitly in terms of the variable , those function are

called explicitly function.
The equation can define a implicitly relation between variable and
this function is called implicitly function.

In some cases we may be able to solve the equation for as an

explicitly function of , but often we can not put the equation as
the form For those cases how to find the differentiation?
For Example: Equation can determine a explicitly function ; can
also determine a function in terms of and , but can’t write in the
form .
Example2: Find from the equation

Example 4: Find an equation of the line tangent of the curve
