Stability Stabilization and Steering

History shows that control systems used in elevators, and water clock Published early 19th century academic journals used control systems for a specific application controlling and steering ships! Only in early 20th century, feedback amplifier analysis is reported thus Bode, Nquist and Root Locus came to life!

System Performance Specifications

Analysis is the process by which a system s performance is determined. For example, we evaluate its transient response and steady-state error to determine if they meet the desired specifications. Design is the process by which a system s performance is created or changed. For example, if a system s transient response and steady-state error are analyzed and found not to meet the specifications, then we change parameters or add additional components to meet the specifications. A control system is dynamic: It responds to an input by undergoing a transient response before reaching a steadystate response that generally resembles the input.

Mathematics
Kirchhoff s voltage law: The sum of voltages around a closed path equals zero. Kirchhoff s current law: The sum of electric currents flowing from a node equals zero. Newton s laws: The sum of forces on a body equals zero; the sum of moments on a body equals zero.

Many systems can be approximately described by this equation, which relates the output, c(t), to the input, r(t), by way of the system parameters, ai and bj. Differential equation if the system is linear, timeinvariants Laplace Transform is a transfer function from differential equation. State-space representation use in digital computers to control systems. Higher order differential equation.

Assignment
A university wants to establish a control system model that represents the student population as an output, with the desired student population as an input. The administration determines the rate of admissions by comparing the current and desired student populations. The admissions office then uses this rate to admit students. Draw a functional block diagram showing the administration and the admissions office as blocks of the system. Also show the following signals: the desired student population, the actual student population, the desired student rate as determined by the administration, the actual student rate as generated by the admissions office, the dropout rate, and the net rate of influx.
