Significant Figures
What is significant
figures?
Significant
figures pertain to the
digits or figures that are
certain to give reasonably
reliable information.
Helpful in attaining a level
of certainty when
expressing a calculated
quantity .
Rules in
determining
significant figures
1. All nonzero
digits (1-9)
are significant.
Examples:
749 mL – 3 significant
figures
1 593 587 s – 7 significant
figures
16.21 L – 4 significant
2. Zeros to the
left of the first
nonzero digit are
not significant.
Examples:
0.56 – 2 significant figures
0.005869 – 4 significant
figures
0.00001 – 1 significant
figure
3. Zeros between
nonzero digits
are significant.
Examples:
4036 g – 4 significant
figures
7.02 g – 3 significant
figures
5.3900007 g – 8 significant
4. Zeros to the
right of a nonzero
digit with a
decimal point are
significant.
Examples:
95.70 mm – 4 significant
figures
1.00 g – 3 significant
figures
1895.0 cm – 5 significant
5. Zeros at the
end of a nonzero
digit without a
decimal point are
not significant.
Examples:
300 km – 1 significant
figure
14 500 km – 3 significant
figures
8 220 km – 3 significant
Significant figures
in Calculations
Addition and subtraction
- the number of decimal
places in the answer should be
the same as the number with
the least decimal places
among those being added or
subtracted.
Example:
2.051 mm
+ 3.56 mm
72.1 mm
77.711 mm
Answer:
77.7 mm
Example:
32.63 g
- 5.2 g
27.43 g
Answer:
27.4 g
Multiplication and
Division
- the answer should have the
same number of significant
figures as the number, among
those being multiplied or
subtracted, with the least
number of significant figures.
Example:
7.065 m
× 1 2.0 m
84.78 m²
Answer:
84.8 m²
Example:
162.05 m
÷ 3.2 s
50.640625 m/s
Answer:
51 m/s
