Pilot project for use of electric vehicles for urban deliveries in Bulgaria

May 2011

Feasibility of Electric Vehicle use

Feasibility of Electric Vehicle use (2)

Typical specifications of serial EVs

Electricity consumption 90-300 Wh/km Range of standard capacity of current EV batteries 8-30 kWh Gross weight 1200-2200 kg (350-600 kg useful load) Guaranteed range 60-120 km Charge time from flat battery
6-8 hours at 220 V/16 A 30 minutes for 80% capacity at Mode 4 ( 50 kW direct fast charge)

Locations of retail chain shops in Sofia

280 shops part of retail chains in Sofia Loading bays with defined parking places and/or loading ramps 10-30 min. loading/unloading time

Opportunity fast-charge provides practically sufficient EV range for urban deliveries

Typical daily distance travelled for an urban delivery van in Sofia, Bulgaria ~ 110 km

Typical stay at nighttime garage > 6 hours (sufficient for a slow charge)
Typical unloading time at delivery point 10-30 min. (sufficient for an opportunity fast-charge) Electric Vehicle Nighttime Garage Daily Delivery Route Distribution Warehouse City Delivery Points Slow charging at nighttime garage Opportunity fast-charge at delivery point

Advantages of EV use for urban deliveries

No noise => enables off-peak-traffic delivery, saves time/costs per single delivery Lower cost per km => opportunity for more frequent deliveries of smaller batches of fresh products, more efficient sales for retailers, less spoilage losses for wholesalers/retailers Adequate energy rates for fleet operators, income from energy fed back into the grid at peak rates when feasible

Requirements towards charging infrastructure

Slow charging stations at fleet residence (usually nighttime) Fast charging stations for opportunity charging at loading bays intersection points of delivery routes Standard protocols of communication between EV charging infrastructure energy supplier/charging service provider billing and settlement system

Main features of Pilot Project

Group delivery of 700 1000 electric vehicles for public and private fleet clients Involvement of municipal authorities, electric utilities, retail partners, electric vehicles suppliers, fleet operators, charging infrastructure suppliers, financing partners Definition of the most feasible number and location for initial deployment of fast charge stations Dissemination of results and multiplication on commercial basis
