His father consistently lived beyond his income. qIn 1824 was thrown in Marshalsea Prison for failure to pay his debts. q His formal schooling ending in 1927, the novelist became a legal reporter and in 1831 a political reporter. qHis first literary pieces, published sporadically in periodicals between 1833 and 1835, were collected in 1936 as Sketches by Boz. qThe success of Pickwick Papers introduced him to marry Catherine 5/23/12 Hogarth in 1836.

His American tour in 1842 was highly successful, but his severe criticisms of United States in American notes. qIn 1846 Dickens was the first editor of the Daily News. qIn 1856 purchased Gadshill Place, a Kentish mansion that he had longed for when a child. qIn 1857 he met an actress, Ellen Lawless, who was responsible for the separation of Dickens from his wife in 1858. qDickens died at Gadshill in 1870 and was buried at Westminster Abbey.

Hard Times was written in 1854. This work meant a strong criticism to the bourgeois and the system of industrialization. The characters of Hard Times aren t amusing and imaginary representations but caricatures of the well-to-do manipulators of the social system of the time.

PLOT:
Hard Times developes in the industrial coketown. It tells us about the life of its inhabitants. The rulers are Bounderby, the banker, Gradgrind, the hardware dealer and Blackpool, the power-loom operator. Gradgrinds son robs Bounderbys bank, and blames Blackpool because he needs money to divorce his wife.

However, Bounderby trusts Blackpool and hires him, until he discover that Blackpool supports the unionism. Then he fires him, and Blackpool dies in an abandoned mine while seeking work.
