• Place called Golgotha. Jesus crucified with two criminals.
• At noon darkness came over all the land

• They give him a sponge filled with sour wine to drink
which he refuses.
• Jesus gives a loud cry (or Father into you hands I commit
my spirit) and breathes his last.

declared truly this man was God’s Son.

Magdalene and others.

Son of God.
Jesus’ death He died as an atonement for sin, ransoming many,
as a substitute for our sin
The opening of graves Foreshadows the resurrection of Jesus and
believers
Discuss the view that, for Christians, Jesus' resurrection
is more important than his death [8]
• Jesus dies to atone for human sin. The Lamb of God slain to
redeem all humanity.
• This is prophesied in Isaiah 53, ‘on him were laid the sins of us
all.
• The resurrection validates both of the above statements.
• If Jesus had not risen from the dead He was not the lamb of
God.
• The resurrection validates the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross
and symbolises the acceptance of the sacrifice by God.
• All the charges of blaspheme are dropped and Jesus is
vindicated.
• His resurrection lays the foundation of the Church
• It authenticates the message of the disciples as they spread
the good news.
• It gives his disciples hope that one day they to might be
resurrected bodily, having a body similar to Jesus.
Explain why belief in the ascension of Jesus is important
to Christians [8]
• Though not spoken about much it is a crucial piece in the story
of salvation.
• First of all it fulfils the old testament prophesies.
• It validates that the charges of blaspheme have been dropped,
that Jesus was with out sin and his sacrifice had been accepted
by god, and He has triumphed over sin, death and Satan.
• It demonstrates Jesus’ been given all authority and power over
all things seen and unseen. Jesus now sits at the right hand of
the Father with authority to judge all the living and the dead.
• He will come again this time as a judge to judge the world and
take His own back with Him to the place He has prepared for
them.
• He commissions his disciples to go into the whole world to
preach the good news, baptise in the name of the Father, the
Son and the Holy Spirit, and make disciples.
Explain why belief in the ascension of Jesus is important
to Christians [8]
• It Gives Christians hope that they are saved from the coming
judgement of God
• It therefore encourages Christians to live lives after Jesus’
example.
• The Holy Spirit could now be sent into the world, to come along
side Christians to help and guide them.
• The Holy Spirit is the guarantee for Christians that they have
been forgiven.
