After graduating from City College of New York with a B.A. in Psychology, Roque Gerald began the first phase of his career, marked by successful terms as a group work supervisor, social worker, community liaison, protective service investigator, and mental health therapist at numerous child and family centers in Virginia. By 1982, Gerald had recommenced his formal education at The Virginia Consortium for Professional Psychology, where for the next four years he pursued doctoral studies in clinical psychology. Earning his Psy.D. from The Virginia Consortium in 1986, Roque Gerald next became an Adjunct Faculty in the School of Psychology & Counseling at Regent University, in tandem with his duties as Staff Psychologist and Program Director at Center Psychiatrists in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Throughout the 1990s, Roque Gerald split his time between a private practice in individual, group, and family therapy, and various short- and long-term positions, including Consultant for the New Hope Institute, consulting psychologist for the ACCESS Program (Alexandria, Virginia), Adjunct Faculty at the Howard University School of Psychology, Clinical Director at the Family Support Division at For Love of Children, and Clinical Director of the Columbia Heights/Shaw Family Support Collaborative. Additionally, Roque Gerald founded and served as Director of the Innovative Practice Group and in 2001 joined the staff at the Child and Family Services Agency in Washington, D.C., where he currently operates as Director.
Licensed by Virginia and the District of Columbia as a clinical psychologist, Roque Gerald upholds the rigorous professional and ethical standards of his field and maintains membership in the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Humane Association (AHA), and other relevant organizations. Notable for his activities in the AHA, Roque Gerald sits on the Board of Directors, co-chairs the Practice Subcommittee of the Migration in Child Welfare National Task Force, and serves on the Children Services Advisory Committee and the Family Group Decision Making Advisory Committee. In addition, Gerald is a member of the LJ Health Care Advisory Workgroup of the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Baltimore, Maryland.
