Question 1 Motor vehicle theft is an issue that becomes a problem for all motorists. These causes a variety of methods are used by vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are safe to be left either at home or while at work. Therefore, many studies have been done to ensure that motor vehicle theft can be addressed by authorities such as police and motorists as well. The graph shows the statistics of stolen motor vehicles in Malaysia from 1980 to 2010. These statistics are the results for 30 years on the issue of vehicle theft. Based on the graph shown, two vehicles were involved in this study, namely motorcycles and private cars. Based on the graph provided, vehicle theft increased in the past 30 years. Between motorcycles and private cars, vehicle theft happens to the motorcycle owners more than private cars owner. In the first 10 years of research from 1980 to 1990, vehicle theft statistics are low and flat. This means that the theft of the vehicle during the period was less under 20,000 cases. If a comparison is made between motorcycles and private cars, motorcycle theft is a little more than private cars. The number of cases peaked at 20,000 cases between 1985 and 1987 contributed by many motorcycle thefts in the period. Theft of private cars should be low in the first 10 years with less than 10,000 cases. Studies in the second period of 10 years between 1990 and 2000 showed an increase of motor vehicle theft. Motorcycle theft increased slightly between 1990 and 1995 compared with private car theft. Increase in vehicle thefts rose sharply between 1995 and 2000 with the number of cases reached 60,000 cases recorded. The total increase in cases was due to the increasing number of motorcycle theft in the same period reaching 40,000 cases. The second periods of 10 years studies indicate that theft of private cars is under control same like the first 10 years studies. The number of cases is only around 10,000 cases. Comparison between the theft of motorcycles and private cars during this period was significantly different with the theft of motorcycles have increased 30,000 cases in the second period of research. Research in the last 10 years between 2000 and 2010 show the flow of a substantial increase in the number of motor vehicle theft. This can be seen in the theft of private cars. In the first 20 years of research showing car theft is only about 10,000 cases, but for the last 2

OUMH1203

10 years of case studies it increase to 20,000 cases. From the year 2000 to 2004, a minor increase can be seen in the theft of motorcycles and private cars. A sharp rise in cases involving theft of motorcycles can be seen from the year 2004 to 2006. Cases increased by 200%, from 40,000 cases in 2000 to 120,000 cases in 2006. The total number of vehicle theft cases also rose sharply to nearly 16,000 cases. From 2006 to 2010, a decrease in theft cases can be seen at a slower rate. This may be due to the action and prevention programs that have been made by the authorities to reduce vehicle theft. Motorists also have taken strict security measures to protect their vehicles. Based on a research made in 30 years on the theft of vehicles, some suggestions for security measures can be taken by vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are safe. Security measures can be taken by the owner of the motorcycle is like putting a motorcycle in designated places, to make sure bike is locked, use the key and additional chain, put the motorcycle in a bright and conspicuous place or engrave the registration number at the important parts of the motorcycle. For private car owners, some security measures can be recommended to prevent theft. Among the proposals is to ensure that the alarm system to function properly, use the additional keys on the steering wheel, gear, wheels and clutch, make sure the car is locked and engraving car registration numbers on the car mirror (sand blasting). All proposals that have been raised to help vehicle owners to ensure their vehicle are safe from theft. Question 2 Environmental pollution is a serious issue at present. This is because contamination that happening now has caused the earth to heat and causing the greenhouse effect. In addition, environmental degradation will cause harm to humankind. Environmental pollution caused by various types of pollution such as water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, chemical pollution, thermal pollution and others. All pollution is usually caused by factories located in industrial areas. However, this contamination was not felt by the locals as the industrial areas located far away from residential areas. An international company is planning to build a factory near my neighborhood. Construction of this plant is believed to be harmful to the environment. It will pollute the environment with thermal pollution, chemical pollution, air pollution and noise pollution. Therefore, I do not support the construction of the plant to be built near my neighborhood. I really hope the people in my neighborhood would support the view that I provide. This is due to the effects of pollution that we'll face in the future if the plant is built near our home. Air pollution will cause residents in the vicinity of the disease related to respiratory tract. Noise will be disturbing the peace of our daily life. No more quiet and peaceful situation. Chemical pollution will cause the population exposed to the defects and genetic damage and thermal pollution will result in our neighborhood hot. Although the plant has not been built, I can feel that we will deal with these problems. However, I am not against development in our neighborhood. Many other opinions stating the advantages of the factory construction. Among the benefits that can be enjoyed by local residents are jobs. Construction of this plant will create many job opportunities. Young people seeking employment can apply for jobs when the plant was completed later. In addition, the construction of the plant will be the main factor that will develop the surrounding area. Perhaps many public facilities that will be built parallel to the construction of the plant and will develop this area. Other opinion also states that the construction of this plant will be able to generate more income for the people of the surrounding area. For those who does business like retail stores and food stores, their customers will be increasing. Other types of businesses will increase a lot to accommodate increasing demand.

OUMH1203

Although there are advantages from the construction of this plant, I am stand with the opinion that this plant should not be built in the area near our house. This is because the dangers of pollution that will occur are high and will have an adverse effect on us all. Existing evidence indicates a danger to us if a plant is too close to residential areas. Studies in the United States (United States Environmental Protection Agency) shows 40% of water pollution caused rivers, lakes and other water flow area contaminated and cannot be used for basic use such as drinking. In addition, studies in Malaysia about air pollution states that residential areas near the plant population at high risk of respiratory illnesses by 20% (Department of Environment, Malaysia). Thermal pollution is released into the water causing the water temperature rises and causes the plants and animals died. Certain species of plants and animals will overgrowth. In addition, it will reduce the amount of oxygen in the water. In conclusion, planning to build a plant adjacent to our residential area provides a lot of harm than good. Imagine what the adverse effects that we'll face in the future. Do we all want it to happen? I hope the residents of this neighborhood can support my opinion and do not support the construction of the factory. Question 3 Plagiarism has become an issue of growing concern across universities in Malaysia and internationally. According to the Bioassess website, one of the primary reasons for the rapid growth in plagiarism as an issue is that students have increasingly ready access to downloadable information from the Internet. At the same time, students' time in class and on campus has tended to decline and they are constantly searching for efficient ways to complete assignments and assessment tasks. So, every student whether in the secondary school or universities will have to look for information as fast as they can so they can finish their assignment in a short of time. Plagiarism can be defined in many forms. According to the Bioasses website, some of the more common forms are listed below, however it should be noted that definitions of plagiarism vary somewhat across the disciplines in accordance with differences in knowledge, authorship conventions and traditions.

Cheating in an exam either by copying from other students or using unauthorised notes or other aids. Submitting, as one's own, an assignment that another person has completed. Downloading information, text, computer code, artwork, graphics or other material from the Internet and presenting it as one's own without acknowledgment. Quoting or paraphrasing material from a source without acknowledgment. Preparing a correctly cited and referenced assignment from individual research and then handing part or all of that work in twice for separate subjects/marks. So, why students plagiarize? They are many reasons why student plagiarize. The

most common reason is lack of research skills. Many students do not know how to search using library catalogue, search database, journal articles or any other resources. So, the universities or school must teach their student the skill to search for information by using any resources. Student also have problem to evaluate internet sources. That means student do not know how to evaluate the internet source so it can make a bad impact to student research and their writing skills. Student always confuse about terminology. Terminology is the study of terms and their use according to the Wikipedia. This compounds their 6

OUMH1203

confusion and anxiety. Many do not understand the difference between a report and an essay, between exposition and argumentation and many other form of work. Another problem is student careless in note taking. Many students plagiarize while doing preliminary research. During the note taking phase paraphrased material and directly quoted material can easily be mixed up if students aren't careful. At a later date when students begin writing their essay they may no longer be able to distinguish what material is theirs and what material came from their sources. In addition, the student may have written incomplete or incorrect bibliographic information and cannot locate the source they quoted to ensure that they have not plagiarized. Lastly, student get confuse about how to properly cite sources. The lack of consistency among the different style guides compounds the problems that students experience when citing sources. So, now we know why student plagiarize. The bad things about plagiarism are it not fair to the original writer for the sources. Their hard work to make a new idea, research or production is not credit to them. Other people use their work like their own idea and present the idea as a new presentation. So, thats why plagiarism is a theft work. They take the idea without permission and claim it as their own work. So, in my opinion plagiarism is a bad thing to do. If we take other people work, we must credit the work to their original writer or publisher. So, learn how to appreciate other people work by learning to citation the source or give credit to the original writer or publisher.
