Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North KANATA NORTH WARD COUNCIL Monday, September 24th, 7-9 pm Program Room,

Kanata Seniors Centre, 2500 Campeau Dr.

There is a great deal to tell you about at the upcoming Ward Council meeting from my trip to China to a presentation on an application for two towers of 24 and 30 storeys. My report will include meetings over the summer to set strategic directions for this term of council, a fiscal framework for the city and guidelines for the 2008 budget. Ill also report on my trip, representing the Mayor, to China, the first City wide giveaway day, changes in transit routes, the status of the widening of March Road, the Kanata North picnic, commencement of construction of Walden Park, the Kanata North Childcare Committee, changes to Highway 417 and plans for the City owned lands next to Kanata Avenue. Last week Council approved the purchase of land for the Kanata North Recreation Centre so we can now start discussions on what to include in the building and on the adjacent lands. At the same meeting the environmental assessment for future widening of Campeau Drive was approved. Earlier that week the Library Board approved my report recommending that the district library for western Ottawa be located in the City lands off Kanata Avenue as part of a civic complex. Transportation issues have occupied a lot of my time as I seek to get some of the roads we need built or improved. Council has sent my request to fund Terry Fox Drive in 2008 to the 2008 budget considerations (It had been scheduled for between 2013-2020). Completion of the transitway from Woodroffe Ave. to Moodie Drive has been made a priority with part already under construction. Ill also report on what has ensued following the meeting on Blasting issues this week, on meetings to approve the City-wide zoning by-law in October, and on the updating of the Citys Official Plan, Transportation Master Plan and Infrastructure Master Plan that is presently underway. Our Community Policing officer will report on police and safety issues and those in attendance will let us know about upcoming issues in their parts of Kanata North. The special presentation on development issues will by Richcraft, who have applied for official plan and zoning amendments for two very high buildings and a retail mall adjacent to Terry Fox Drive at the Queensway. This will be one of the most information packed meetings this year. All residents are welcome to attend and participate in the discussion.

Support Our Troop Decals

City Council has passed a motion of appreciation for the service and sacrifice of Canadian troops and emergency service workers serving at home and around the world. This motion also authorized placing Support Our Troops decals on City vehicles and clearly stated that it was not a motion of support for war. Along with the Mayor and most other members of Council I supported this motion.

Ward Office:
A small ward office is being constructed at the back of a storage room in the Mlacak Centre. It should be available by the end of September, providing a venue for meetings with Kanata residents close to home.

Fall Cleaning the Capital

A number of groups in Kanata North have already registered to go through our parks and open spaces and clear any garbage and debris. Families, neighbourhoods, students and businesses can all take on this challenge to help maintain our community. To get involved pick a location and register online at ottawa.ca/clean or call 311 (TTY::613-580-2401). You will be provided cleanup starter kits and have a chance to win prizes. For dog owners, thank you for stooping and scooping after your dog. Remember that the bag and its contents are not to be place in a trash bin. For health reasons take it home and flush the contents down the toilet.
