KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North WARD COUNCIL, MONDAY JAN 28TH, 7-9 PM,

Program Room, Kanata Seniors Centre, 2500 Campeau Drive (west end of Mlacak Centre).
This month Police Chief Vern White will arrive at about 8 pm to discuss policing and answer your questions. This is an opportunity to hear directly from our new Police Chief and to make recommendations on the service you would like to see in Kanata. The first part of the meeting includes the community forum where residents may ask questions and make suggestions. My monthly report will include the impact of the budget on Kanata North, the downtown parking issue, the Kanata North Recreation Complex, an update on city wide issues and development plans for Kanata North including a new subdivision in Morgans Grant off Klondike, the park plans for Briarbrook, status of the widening of March Road, a commercial plaza on Klondike at March Road, and commencement of construction between Kanata Avenue and the Richardson Side Road (Broughton lands).

DEVELOPMENT OF THE BROUGHTON LANDS

Work started this week on the first phase of lands to the north of Kanata Avenue at Terry Fox Drive. This includes removal of many trees in the areas where buildings are to be constructed. It is expected that blasting to meet the approved grading of the lands and for the installation of water and sewer services will begin the week of February 4th and continue for 4-5 months. A pre-blast inspection will be made on nearby homes as required by the City. This development is part of a subdivision approved several years ago. I will have a copy of the plans at the January Ward Council meeting if you would like to see what has been approved for this location. The eastern part of the site will be developed at a later date.

WORLD RELIGION DAY

I was privileged to attend a Celebration for World Religion Day last Sunday. This was a program from many different faiths (Sikh, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, BahaI and Jewish) all of which showed that there is an underlying theme in every faith of the importance of peace, understanding, justice and support for all, particularly the disadvantaged. Two of the groups of children performing were from Kanata and demonstrate the multi-cultural mosaic of this area. Congratulations to all who organized and participated in this moving event.

YOUNG AT ART 2008

Young at Art is an exceptional opportunity for young artists aged 13-19 to participate in a citywide juried art exhibition. The Kanata Civic Art Gallery, located in the Mlacak Centre, started this competition 12 years ago. Three years ago it was expanded to other parts of the City with the Kanata part remaining a strong component. In 2008 all participants will receive a T-shirt featuring the winning design from Earl of March Secondary School student Zhenhe Wu. The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 7, 2008 at 4 p.m. Application forms and guidelines are available at secondary schools, Ottawa Public Library branches and online at ottawa.ca/arts. I look forward to seeing the wonderful art from local students.
