KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North MARCH ROAD

Next Tuesday, Aug. 19 the Corporate Services and Economic Development Committee will receive a report dealing with properties at March Road and Klondike, including the March House property. Resolving issues over these properties and the Riotrin commercial property directly north of the City lands is essential to being able to widen March Road from Morgans Grant Way to the Old Carp Road/Maxwell Bridge intersection. The basic problem is that all of the land needed for the widening is coming from the east side of March Road in order to preserve the Old Town Hall on the west side. Additionally, a storm water pond is needed for both the development of the road and the properties, service connections are needed for March Road, March House is in immediate need of restoration and the environmental integrity of Shirleys Brook needs to be protected. This report resolves all of these issues such that the design of March Road can proceed with construction projected to start early next year. If approved by Committee and Council, the City will sell some of the lands and March House to the developer, the developer will immediately stabilize March House at his expense, the storm water pond will be located on the remaining City lands (it is paid for by fees from development), servicing for March House will be through the Riotrin lands and approval will be given to obtaining lands needed for the widening south of Klondike Road. I have been working with staff for more than a year to reach this agreement. The March Road widening is needed, together with traffic signals, to increase safety and reduce congestion. It is also required before any additional commercial development, likely including a food store, can proceed. The full report can be seen by going to ottawa.ca and clicking on agendas on the right. Go to the Corporate Services meeting on Aug. 19 and click first on the agenda and then scroll to the agenda item March Road: Sale of March House Property - AND RELATED ISSUES and click on the report number. The meeting starts at 10 am at City Hall and the public can attend and speak to any item on the agenda.

EMERALD ASH BORER

More than 25% of the trees in Ottawa are ash and these are now threatened by the emerald ash borer, a green metallic beetle that has a large, flat, white, bell

shaped larva up to 30 mm long. The ash borer has been found in Ottawa. It can be spread by moving logs, trimmings etc from one location to another so the City has stopped trimming ash trees and residents are advised not to move any ash materials from their property. Further investigation is proceeding. Call 311 to find out where you can get more detailed information.

WEST NILE
Two crows in Ottawa have tested positive for West Nile Disease - one in West Carleton and the other in Manotick. Take care to protect yourself from mosquito bites and ensure that there is no stagnant water near your home in order to reduce breeding.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARD WASTE DEPOT

The next depot is this Saturday, Aug. 16 at 2705 Stevenage Drive in SE Ottawa. There will be one closer to Kanata in the fall.
