The Transportation Committee will be approving the strategic approach, scope and timing for the review and update of the Transportation Master Plan (TMP), including the Ottawa Pedestrian Plan and Ottawa Cycling Plan, next week. This will be the start of the review of the transportation component of the Official Plan which is to be finalized by the end of 2013. The TMP includes the location of both primary and secondary transitways, the O Train, road networks and priorities for construction of new or widened roads, transitway segments, cycling routes and pedestrian sidewalks and paths. Even the timing for building transportation infrastructure that is funded by new development is prioritized, since there is not enough funding to do all needed construction at once. The public will be able to provide their views and suggestions throughout the process. Projects of importance to Kanata include the timing of construction of the light-rail transit system to the west, the extension of Campeau Drive to Huntmar Drive and connecting cycling routes throughout the City. At the same meeting, the Committee will receive an interim report on the Western Light Rail Transit Corridor Planning and Environmental Assessment Study. This study is expected to be completed by this time next year and at that time a recommendation will be made for the light rail route from Tunneys Pasture to Baseline. Construction will depend on the TMP priority setting and obtaining funding.
