The last public meeting (June 2013) was the final one on the Citys Drainage Study which will be the basis on which KNL develops the drainage system for their approved subdivision (passed by Council in 2003 and approved by the OMB in 2006). At that time, in response to the public, I committed to ensuring that the KNL drainage plans would be made available to the public. Im happy to announce that City staff have agreed and will post the proposed subdivision plan, together with the detailed studies and plans, on www.ottawa.ca/devapps once the submission is complete these typically include the Environmental Impact Statement, Stormwater Management Plan, Servicing Brief, Tree Conservation Plan and Noise Assessment. Community Associations will be informed when these are posted. I will note it in my column and anyone can review them online.
CROSSING GUARDS
The Ottawa Safety Council is contracted by the City to provide crossing guards where approved by the City following an evaluation. This year a number of new locations will start in September. I understand that some are in Kanata North. The Safety Council is looking for adults for the new locations. This is a paid position for up to 1.5 hours in the morning and the same in the afternoon on school days at a rate of $32.13 per day. For more information or to apply for a position call (613) 238-1513 or email kathleen.cameron@ottawasafetycouncil.ca
COMMUNITY GARDENS
The Kanata Chinese Seniors and the Briarbrook/Morgans Grant Community Association have been working on the development of a community garden for some time. Depending upon final funding approval, the plan is to have a number of raised garden plots in the hydro easement that passes through Morgans Grant. This land is owned by the City but is not designated as a park. The result has been minimal maintenance with many weeds including poison parsnip (stay away from this plant which looks like Queens Anne Lace with yellow flowers it can cause serious burns). I am trying to find uses for the corridor that would enhance the maintenance while providing a benefit to the community.
