Room 231 Classroom Procedures Mr.

White 2008 2009 School Year

Welcome to 6th Grade. Below is a list of items to be discussed so that you are well aware of how this room will function and what is expected of you. Over the course of the next 9 months, many things will be asked of you. You are all capable of doing everything that is asked. As long as you give 100%, YOU WILL SUCCEED!

Introduction
Welcome to The 231. The following takes place between August 25, 2008 and June __, 2008. It will pass by quickly, so enjoy the ride.

Classroom Rules and Consequences

Please refer to separate Discipline Plan for details. Helper Slips and Homebase Jobs.

Morning Routine
When you arrive in the classroom, the first thing you need to do is put away materials, backpacks, and coats. Get yourself organized and sit in your assigned seat. Attendance will be taken promptly at 8:20 (bell) every morning. Once attendance is taken, you may sit anywhere you like and talk quietly with your classmates AT A REASONABLE VOLUME until the bell at 9:15, at which point our day will begin. During this time the McMurray Morning News will air and you will pause and listen to the announcements.

Locker Assignments
You will be sharing a closet with some of your classmates. You will keep it clean. You will also have a locker assigned to you. You may have your own or may be asked to share. This will also stay clean. You have been given enough space so that all your materials will easily fit in your closet, your locker, and your desk. No items are to be kept on the floor. Anything left on the floor will be thrown away overnight.

Library
Three students may go to the library at a time (unless told otherwise). There will be a Library Sign Up sheet on the desk by the door. Sign Up when you need go, ask Mr. White if you may go, then take a library pass and head out. When you return, cross your name off the list and inform the next person on the list that it is their turn. There are extra library lists in the desk once the current list is full.

Restroom Policy
You need to ask to use the restroom. Do not ask in the middle of class unless its an emergency, but rather wait until transitions, independent work, etc. Be sure to take the appropriate bathroom pass with you.

Windowsill Bins
There are 3 labeled bins on the windowsill where things can be turned in. These bins are the Lost and Found Box, PTA container, and Mr. Whites Bin. Mr. White will discuss these more with you as the day progresses. (Bus passes, excuses, misc. notes all qualify for Mr. Whites Bin)

Writing Portfolios
The bin of portfolio folders is also on the windowsill. Your portfolio is designed to contain your writing samples from English class.

Location of items in room

Areas in the room where supplies are located are clearly labeled. If you need to get into the supply cabinet, please ask Mr. White before doing so.

Room Cleanliness
Room 319 is as much your room as it is Mr. Whites. Respect each other by keeping the room in good shape. Remember how the room looked when you came in at 9:00 AM? That is how the room should look at the end of each day. It is everyones responsibility to keep the room clean and orderly.

Homework Board
The homework board is located in the back of the classroom on the white board. Assignments will be written down throughout the day, and it is your responsibility to record them in your assignment books. The homework policy is attached and will be explained in class.

Computer Usage
Computers are a great educational tool. If you need the computer for any reason, you must ask Mr. White first and give a reason. As of the week before school, the only printer we can send documents to is the Library. This may change in the future but as of now, print all documents to the library. (Primarily for AR, to be explained during Reading).

Paper Heading
Any work that is done on composition paper, separate sheet, etc. will require a heading. Below is the format. Heading will go in the top left corner of the paper. Student Name Date Subject Assignment John Smith September 20, 2007 (or 9/20/07) Math Page 36, 1-15

Attention on Teacher
When Mr. White needs your attention, he will simply say Lets Go. At this point students are expected to be facing the teacher and quiet.

Respect and Courtesy

When Mr. White is in the middle of a lesson, or another student is speaking, please do not talk to your neighbors, ask to go to the restroom, sharpen a pencil, or wander around the room without purpose. These things can all be accomplished at more appropriate times.

Effort
If you put forth effort and determination into your work as a student, then you will be pleased with your performance and I will be proud of you. Effort is not something I can teach, but is something that comes from within. It is in each one of you, and we will collectively push one another to achieve our best. Do your homework, study for tests, and pay attention during class. These are the very basic keys to success, not just in 6th grade, but for the rest of your schooling all the way through college. It is through effort and determination that you can accomplish great things both in and out of the classroom.
