Criteria for Effective Curation

Criteria Determine who comprises the professionals in the chosen field. Have they published academically? Who is talking about them? Do they maintain a respected reputation? Why curate? Who is this for (audience) and what value will it bring them? What topic encompasses these values? What am I interested to know more about? Is the information relevant? Does it represent the overall goal? Am I using a good mix of media? Does the information come from a trusted source? Is the information updated? Why did I include this source in my collection? Would the work qualify as premium content? What relevance does this have to my goals? Do I already have this? Is this for quality or quantity? Is there anything inappropriate or unfavorable? Will it improve the greater body of work? Is it cohesive? Check

Is there depth and quality of the discussion? What is the added value to the existing collection?

What is Content Curation?

Determining your curation goal and defining your purpose. Selecting a topic that meets the goal. Researching the content leaders who write, blog, and create content around the topic. Following 4-6 content leaders and getting to know them. Monitoring who your sources follow. Monitoring who follows your sources. Using a tool to limit information to your topic and sort through content, such as BagtheWeb Asking questions related to your topic What do I know? What do I want/need to know? Observing your source material. Does it answer your questions? If not, find other, more relevant, sources for your topic. Organizing your sources (rank, sort, layout). Sharing and interacting with others Organizing the material in a way that makes sense and stays true to the goal Presenting the information in a way that will engage the audience Giving credit to all sources with proper annotation Interacting on the blogs, videos, and podcasts, etc. of others Thanking others for sharing my information Focusing on quality sources over quantity. Thanking others for commenting on my content Asking for comments and/or contributions Summarizing the information Making sense of the content before deciding to keep or discard
