School celebrates Heroes Remembrance Day
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Voorhees Sun
Voorhees Middle School facul-
ty members, parents and eighth-
grade students devoted time to re-
member 9/11 by honoring the he-
roes in their own lives.
The 11th annual Heroes Re-
membrance Day was held on Fri-
day, Oct. 12, from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m.
Students nominated a hero,
wrote an essay about their hero,
and brought that hero to the cere-
mony to honor them.
This event started as a healing
response to the events of 9/11 and
has become a learning experience
and an occasion for students to re-
flect upon qualities of heroism in
their lives, a description of the
event in a news release said.
Voorhees Middle School
teacher Noreen Saggese planned
the event from day one.
Each year, the message is dif-
ferent. There is only one thing
new about the event this year its
location. Even though this years
event was held in the auditorium
instead of the cafeteria, it still
had the same effect on the stu-
dents, said elementary event co-
ordinator Irene Afek.
Mayor Michael Mignogna
shared his gratitude with the
crowd for allowing him to speak
once again at the ceremony.

come to this hero day, of the

Aaron Krause, local inventor
and entrepreneur, is featuring his
invention on ABCs Shark Tank
on Friday, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m.
The show features a panel of
entrepreneurs and business exec-
utives who listen to offers from
entrepreneurs looking for in-
vestors or advice.
Krauses product is the Scrub
Daddy a smiley face-shaped,
universal cleaning utensil that
acts as both a sponge and scrub-
bing tool.
Krause, a five-year resident of
Voorhees, was running a buffing
pad manufacturing company in
2007.
I built a lot of equipment and
my hands were always dirty, said
Krause. I couldnt get my hands
clean using regular soap.
Krause used different products
to try and get his hands clean.
From regular soaps to soaps with
exfoliating rocks, no product was
doing the job for him. He then
created a new product. Krause
knew he needed a product that
would act as a scrubbing tool to
get all the dirt and grime off of
his hands before he entered the
office. He finally came up with
the Scrub Daddy.
The Scrub Daddy acts as both a
sponge and scrubber depending
on the water temperature, Krause
said.
Inventing a product was the
first step to getting on the show.
Krause religiously watched
Shark Tank.
Everyone was telling me to go
on the show, Krause said.
He sent in his application and
waited.
After three months of waiting,
he received a phone call. The
company then sent him a confi-
dentiality contract to stop dis-

Ayes has solid credentials, will
complement governing body
This year residents have the opportuni-
ty to elect a new member to the Voorhees
Township Committee. We are very fortu-
nate to have a new candidate with solid cre-
dentials and a personality that will really
complement our governing body, Andi
Ayes.
During our search for a new candidate
to run with Mario Dinatale, we were im-
pressed with Andis insight into our com-
munity. This insight gives her a strong
focus on keeping Voorhees the best place to
live and raise a family. Ayes was selected
because she truly cares for our community
and the people who live here.
Ayes was raised in Voorhees and lived
here much of her life. After living out of
town for a few years, she moved back to
Voorhees because she wanted her family to
grow up in the same caring and special
community that she experienced.
Ayes has shown active support in her
community by being an active member of
the Acorn Hill Homeowners Association, a
member of Temple Emanuel and has been
active in her daughters schools as a mem-
ber of the HFPA at E.T. Hamilton Elemen-
tary School and a member of the VMS
PFA.
In addition to working well with people
in these organizations, Ayes has a business
sense, and common sense, to address the
challenges that Township Committee faces
on a regular basis. Professionally she
works as a business manager for Acorda, a
pharmaceutical sales firm. Addressing
business issues for a living gives her prac-
tical experience in working through the is-
sues that face Voorhees.
Ayes running mate this year is Mario
Dinatale, a long-time member of Township
Committee who has been there for the past
9 years in assisting Township Committee
in making decisions that effect our com-
munity. We hope for your support this year
on election day to keep Voorhees the best
community to live, work and raise a family.

lection Day is less than two
weeks away. Are you ready to
cast your vote? Do you know
where each of the candidates stands
on the issues important to you?
If not, its not too late.
Todays technology makes it relative-
ly easy for voters to get at least a basic
understanding of political candidates
and their positions on the issues.
Want news coverage? A lot of the
stories that have been written can still
be found on news organizations web-
sites.
Want to get information straight
from the candidates? At least in the
bigger races, they have websites of
their own. Now, we all have to take
what we find at candidates websites
with a little skepticism. After all, its
their website. And they are going to
make the best of it.
Still, one usually is able to get a good
idea of what someone will do if he or
she is elected and be able to compare it
to his or her opponent.
Whats most important is to get as
much information as possible before
entering the voting booth. Dont cast a
vote without understanding the issues
on the table and what each of the can-
didates has to say about those issues.
In many, if not most races, there are
clear differences between those hoping
to win on Election Day. Your votes will
impact your government.
The presidential election naturally
attracts the most attention, but dont
forget about local elections, too.
While more people traditionally
show up at the polls when there is a
major office up for grabs, chances are
your local municipal governing body
or school board will have more of an
impact on your everyday life. Property
taxes, government services such as po-
lice, fire, street repair and the well-
being of your school system all are in
the hands of your local leaders.
So take a few minutes to get to know
the candidates who want your vote.
Then be sure to show up and cast your
ballot.

With Election Day fast approaching, are you ready to cast an informed vote?
Study, then vote
Todays technology makes it possible
for everyone to get a good idea of
where candidates stand on important
issues. Take the time to research the
hopefuls before you make the trek to
the voting booth.

Change of season typically
leads to yard work. The changing
leaves lead to beautiful scenery.
However, the falling of these

Unlike many municipalities,
Voorhees does not pay to dump its
leaves. Our leaves are composted
at JDM Tri-Boro in Gibbsboro

calls with producers followed.
The producers prepped Krause
for the show, asking him ques-
tions the sharks might ask.
After months of preparation
and phone calls with ABC repre-
sentatives, Krause flew to Los An-
geles to pitch his product. The
judges were impressed and he
was called back to film in front of
the sharks.
But it wasnt guaranteed that
his segment would air.
About one week ago, I received
an email stating that the episode
will air on Oct. 26, Krause said.
Krause wants national recogni-
tion of his product regardless of
his proposals outcome.
The worst that can happen is
they say no, but I would have na-
tional recognition, he said.
The only one who knows the
outcome is Krause. He could not
share the results until after the
show airs.

Budgets.
DiNatale last appeared on the
November 2009 Ballot. The 2009
Voorhees Budget, on his election
day, listed our township spending
level at $24,890,000 (Source 2009
Voorhees Budget Sheet 3, Line
4).
That $24,890,000 is the real
baseline amount from which we
can measure DiNatales actual
spending results for his entire
current term (three years start-
ing in 2010) on committee.
In 2010, DiNatale and the De-
mocrats increased spending by
$527,000 over the baseline
amount. In 2011, DiNatale and De-
mocrats increased spending by
$900,000, and in 2012 DiNatale and
Democrats increased spending by
$605,000. (Sources 2010, 2011, 2012
Voorhees Budgets Sheet 3, Line
4).
The real fact is with DiNatales
leadership skills and with the
Democrats on committee, theres
$2,032,000 more spending in
Voorhees.
There are no saving from DiNa-
tale and his fellow Democrats.
None!
Here are two more question for
DiNatale and the Democrats to
answer.
How many million dollars have
you borrowed in the last three
years that Voorhees taxpayers
will now have to repay? Yes, mil-
lions for taxpayers to repay!
How many Voorhees Police Of-
ficers (including every Dispatch
Officer) have you eliminated in
your employee reduction pro-
gram? I dont think those lost of-
ficers have made us safer!
Its clear when you look at the
facts. Its time for new leadership
in Voorhees.
Ron Richards
Committeeman backs
DiNatale, Ayes
For the past twelve years, I
have served Voorhees Township
as a member of Township Com-
mittee. All of my decisions from
2001 to now have been made with
one guiding principle. To make
Voorhees Township a great place
to live and raise a family.
My experience as a member of
Township Committee for over a
decade has afforded me with the
knowledge of what talents, skills
and personal attributes a person
needs to succeed in this position.
After considering the four candi-
dates for this position, I support
Mario DiNatale and Andrea
Andi Ayes for Voorhees Town-
ship Committee.
I have worked with Mario for
the past 9 years on Township
Committee. DiNatale is a success-
ful businessman. He brings his
business and community knowl-
edge to help Voorhees with our
township budget and day-to-day
services. He is a tough negotiator
and always fights to protect the
townships interest. He has
served on many township boards
and committees. He has volun-
teered as a baseball coach for
GVAA. He and his family found-
ed the Alicia Rose Foundation,
which improves the quality of life
for teens with life-threatening ill-
nesses. But what I admire most
about DiNatale is his heart. He
truly cares about Voorhees Town-
ship.
Ayes grew up in Voorhees and
attended Eastern High School.
She has two daughters, one that
attends Voorhees Middle School
and one that attends Hamilton
School. She is a member of VMS,
PFA, and HFPA. She works as an
area business manager in phar-
maceutical sales. She is a work-
ing mother who wants to keep
Voorhees Township a great place
to raise a family. Like many
women in Voorhees, she succeeds
in managing her family and her
career. Her life and business ex-
perience have prepared her for
this position. She is the perfect
person to fill my seat on Town-
ship Committee.
There have been many success-
es during my tenure on Commit-
tee. I want to make sure Voorhees
Township continues to succeed.
That is why I endorse Mario Di-
Natale and Andrea Andi Ayes
for Voorhees Township Commit-
tee. They have the personal val-
ues, experience and desire to keep
Voorhees Township a great place
to live and raise a family.
I ask you to join me in support-
ing Mario DiNatale and Andrea
Andi Ayes for Voorhees Town-
ship Committee with your vote on
Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Joe Lovallo
Mayor supports Ayes,
DiNatale for committee
I write this letter in support of
Deputy Mayor Mario DiNatale
and Andi Ayes for Voorhees
Township Committee.
In his nine years serving our
community, DiNatale has worked
hard to provide the quality of life
and level of service Voorhees res-
idents expect and deserve, while
generating revenue and control-
ling spending.
DiNatale has helped reduce the
number of township employees
by 25 since 2006 with programs
such as side-arm trucks for trash
collection. He supported
Voorhees partnering with a com-
pany that allows us to purchase
utilities directly from the
providers, saving $150,000 per
year.
He has been a passionate pro-
ponent of shared services, saving
the Township $400,000 by joining
county dispatch and joining eight
other municipalities for trash dis-
posal, saving $138,000 last year in
tipping fees. Other such agree-
ments exist with Eastern Region-
al High School for snow removal,
Gibbsboro for leaf removal, and
Laurel Springs for trash removal.
DiNatale has supported the
townships five-year road im-
provement and maintenance pro-
gram, using grants to improve
traffic flow at intersections such
as Cooper and Centennial and
worked to have the County pay for
the ongoing facelift of Route 561.
He has supported moving
Town Hall into the Voorhees
Town Center, leading to an in-
crease in businesses and ratables.
In 2010, PREIT, the owner of the
Town Center, paid $772,000 in
taxes based on the assessed value
of the property. This year, as a re-
sult of new business at the Town
Center, PREIT will pay $2.1 mil-
lion in taxes, benefiting both the
Township and our schools.
DiNatale worked closely with
Virtua to bring their $500 million
medical campus to Route 73. The
project created 1000 new jobs and
millions in tax revenue as well as
a $10 million sewer upgrade at no
taxpayer cost. The new hospital
has also led to the opening of sev-
eral other businesses near the
campus.
DiNatale has also supported a
new community playground at
John Connolly Park, the turf field
at the Giangiulio Complex, turf
fields at the Rabinowitz Baseball
Complex, upgrades at the Lions
Lake Softball Complex and im-
proved lighting at the Maiaroto
Soccer Complex.
Environmentally, the township
has preserved 203 acres of land

choices that our students make
when they picked their heroes,
said Mignogna. When I look
around this room, I am proud of
the choices that our students have
made.
Performances by the eighth-
grade band as well as various stu-
dent performers helped pay trib-
ute to their heroes.
Songwriter and author Hank
Fellows was also present at the
ceremony. Fellows composed a
9/11-tribute song, Half Way to
Heaven, in honor of the lives lost
during the terrorist attacks.
Four students stepped onto the
stage to perform Fellows song.
Guest speaker Assemblyman
Louis Greenwald was also at the
ceremony. His children picked
himself and his wife, Cynthia, as
heroes.
I want you to take the time
when the ceremony is over and
look at the adult you have hon-
ored here today. They are people
that have been instrumental in
your life, Greenwald said.
From doctors, lawyers, police
officers, firefighters, and more,
each child picked their hero for a
reason, he said. But Greenwald
said the real inspirations are the
children.
I want you to know that to
each and every one of us, the he-
roes in this room are you, said
Greenwald. You have inspired
us.
The ceremony ended with each
child pinning an American flag
onto the shirts of their hero while
handing them the essay written
about them.
Copies of essays were posted
on the wall of heroes inside of
the school.
On the wall, letters with words
of inspiration and gratitude were
crammed together creating a sur-
plus of appreciation.
At the very bottom, Ethan
Shacket had his letter posted on
the wall. Ethans hero is Larry
Winitsky (Ethan mentions him as
Grampy).
He does almost anything to
make me happy. Its as if hes my
fairy godfather, granting my
every wish, Ethan wrote.
The passage of time really has
not changed the depth of feeling
of students, of the heroes, and of
the educators who are working to-
gether to ensure that the lessons
learned from this horrific event
are with our students and serve
as a positive reminder, Afek said.

turned a former sewer plant into
Hale Park in the Ashland neigh-
borhood and worked with our En-
vironmental Commission and
Rutgers University in the trans-
formation of the former Buzby
Landfill into the Voorhees Envi-
ronmental Park. DiNatale also
supported the Townships transi-
tion to single stream recycling.
He has been a passionate advo-
cate of our community events, in-
cluding the Summer Twilight Se-
ries and Halloween in the Park.
He supported the establishment
of the Citizens Cultural and Di-
versity Committee and the Teen
Advisory Committee.
He has also been a vocal oppo-
nent to the proposed Wal-Mart at
the former Echelon Mall, the pro-
posed Super Wawa on Burnt Mill
Road and the proposed Super
Wawa on Route 73 across from
Sturbrige Lakes.
DiNatale has been an active
community volunteer with our
youth sports organizations, St.
Andrews Church and the Sons of
Italy. He and his family started
the Alicia Rose Victorious Foun-
dation, improving the quality of
life for thousands of teens with
life-threatening illnesses.
Ayes shares in Marios philoso-
phy of providing a good quality of
life to the Voorhees community
while increasing revenue and re-
ducing costs. She has already
been a visible attendee at Town-
ship Committee meetings and has
met with the Township Adminis-
trator, the Chief of Police and the
Township CFO to better prepare
herself to serve our community.
Ayes is a Voorhees native, attend-
ed Eastern and is active in our
schools and at Temple Em-
manuel.
I am proud to support Mario
DiNatale and Andi Ayes for
Voorhees Township Committee.

Michael Mignogna
Author dismayed over
treatment by library
Over time the evolution of
friend has been adapted. Initially,
used in the Latin and Greek soci-
eties, as sort of a combination of
the emotions to like and to love.
In looking-up other variations,
friend is considered a person
whom one knows, likes, and
trusts, or a person known well to
another and regarded with liking,
affection, and loyalty.
This thought came up recently
as I attended an event announced
in the newspaper for local au-
thors to sell their publications.
The specific event happened to
take place at my hometown li-
brary; of which I have been a
card-carrying member since sec-
ond grade, a certified volunteer
providing countless hours to
guide folks through English as a
Second Language tutoring, and
an organization which solicited
and persuaded me to donate
money as a Friend of the Li-
brary.
Well, as I excitedly and cau-
tiously approached the event with
books and poster in hand, the
head librarian, who knows me by
name and face, told me I was, not
signed-up and was not on the
list. She corroborated with an-
other librarian who asked if I
was on their list. Now, I am not
aware of what constitutes the
list, but I am aware the head li-
brarian has my email, had com-
municated with me previously
and tried to implore me to donate
my book to the library when it
was newly published.
I was shocked and dismayed.
First, many far-reaching library
systems not only welcomed me to
their author events, but they
awarded me tokens of apprecia-
tion after purchasing a copy of
my book for their collection.
Since I have a bounty of deter-
minism and stick-to-it-tive-ness, I
asked head librarian if I could
walk around the author event
anyway. So, I stashed my book
poster and inventory in the im-
mediate corner and walked
through the author-cramped
venue.
Straight away I caught eyes
with author-friends, who we have
appeared at other related events
and they advised how they did
not sign-up for this event, rather
were sent an invitation all the
way from two counties away in
Vineland
In meeting other authors who
listened to my plight, one ques-
tioned her tablemate who hap-
pened to be the library manager,
selling a book--May that be con-
flict of interest? He said there
must have been an oversight why
I did not sign-up for the event.
Yet, the oversight seems more like
a discrepancy as the library invit-
ed the appearing authors. It is
during this exchange, I reviewed
my alliance to my hometown li-
brary when I highlighted I was a
sponsor in the Friends of the Li-
brary program, which the man-
ager retorted, we havent had
Friends of the Library in four
years. The surrounding authors
looked quizzically by this odd re-
sponse.
This brought me to another
thought, does that mean that I
was de-friended by the library.
Maybe the erroneous grand as-
sumptions is that a town library
is a place to learn, study, convene
and exchange ideas; which inte-
gral for academic relationships
and possibly even conducive to
friendships. I have established
and enhanced friendships from
various activities within the li-
brary walls, but it appears the li-
brarian staff does not want to
augment its existing friends, con-
tacts, relationships, etc. You get
the picture. I would hope my
friends lead me on a more posi-
tive, truthful direction.
Along with many books, maybe
the value of digital friends may
one day exceed the interchanges
that used to mean so much among
friends in traditional brick-and-
mortar libraries.

Animal Welfare Association
(AWA), and Almost Home are
sponsoring a pet food drive from
Oct. 1 to Oct. 31. Working with
Camden County, the shelters will
drop off collection bins at heavily
traveled locations across the re-
gion.
Only canned pet food will be ac-
cepted and collections will be
made every week.
Voorhees bin collection loca-
tions are at the Camden County
Library on 203 Laurel Road, the
second level of the Voorhees
Town Center Mall, and Town Hall
at the Voorhees Town Center.
