Volunteers in Langdon who had been

installing the playground were surprised
to awaken Sunday morning, May 25, to
discover the area had been vandalized.
The vandalism didnt quash efforts of
the Langdon Community Association to
open their new community playground,
as members of the community have
worked two long years trying to bring the
project to completion.
Sometime in the night, someone removed boards supporting cement that
was just setting up and anchoring a support structure. There were fears the foundation would sink and they would have
to remove the affected material and repour. Vandals also smashed windows in a
volunteers bobcat that was on site.
We worked so hardthree days of 12
hours each to get this done, said Chrissy
Craig, spokeswoman for the group. We
are not sure who did this, but we are upsetit may have been kids. We reported
it to the RCMP, but no one has come out
to investigate. I guess it wasnt high on
their response list.
There have been quite a few incidents
of vandalism in the Langdon community
over the last year. Langdons population is
just under the 5,000 residents needed for
designated police enforcement. The community is hoping for a police detachment
once they top the resident requirement.
The hamlet is part of Rocky View County
and Craig said there are peace officers,
but they only do random checks during
the day.
Residents were angered and comments
were reflected in Facebook postings, even
generating some offers of rewards for the
names of the vandals.
Craig said the Community Association
will carry on with the Grand Opening set
for June 1 in spite of the incident. They
will rope off the affected area and attendees will enjoy the planned events. There
will be a bouncy house, cake, events and
open play on the unaffected equipment.
Special speaker MLA Bruce McAllister
will be in attendance. Start time is 4 p.m.
at the park behind the community centre.

Celebrating grad!
Alana Muenchrath and her dad Kelly were all smiles on May 24 at Strathmore High School as
they danced following the grad recognition ceremony. Alana was one of 221 students who walked
across the stage. See more photos on Page 3.

On May 21 FortisAlberta presented
Communities in Bloom (CIB) with a
cheque to help fund their community
garden initiative. CIB is one of eight
recipients of Fortiss 2014 Community
Naturalization Grant program.
The purpose of the grant is to help
municipalities that FortisAlberta serves
develop or improve environmentally
friendly programs and facilities.
Were building a community garden,
it will be much like the one at the old
Anglican Church, said CIB Chair Melody Wilson.
It will be beds that you can rent,
and its a very reasonable fee, I think it
works out to $10 a year just as a deposit
and those funds go back into the garden, whatever we need.
The idea is to provide a gardening
space for those who dont have one, or
for those who maybe want to try gardening but dont want to do it on a large
scale. The new garden will be at Hope
Church, in the section of land north of
the playground.
We are delighted to have the community garden come to Hope Community
Covenant Church. Its just another way
of making a link between the church
and the community, said Karen Harris,
a council member with Hope Church,
and person in charge of the landscape

Strathmore High School (SHS) drama students, and their

is no different. Shes the Man, the popular movie from 2006,
has been transformed and will be shown on the SHS stage
starting June 5.
It was the students idea to do this play, I actually wanted to do Shakespeare and they said no we dont want to do
Shakespeare, but how about if we do a modern Shakespeare.
Our choices were 10 Things I Hate About You and Shes the
Man, said SHS Drama teacher Paula Richardson.

1. Radishes - one of the fastest crops

you can grow, they are ready to eat 4-5
weeks after seeding!
2. Lettuce - there are a lot of different
varieties, and all of them basically have
the same requirements, and you can
start picking the baby leaves for salads,
and continue to harvest
3. Carrots - dont forget to thin
4. Peas - stake for easier picking
5. Tomatoes - nothing beats a homegrown tomato on a sandwich! Dont let
the plants dry out.

Twelfth Night. One of the students, Bront Weissig, has taken

all of the drama classes, including the advanced acting class,
and will be listed as the assistant director on the program. She
is currently helping Richardson this year with the directing
and editing of the script.
It has been a lot of work, probably a little more than I
thought it would be, we had to do a lot of editing and that
took us a lot of time. The students have really bought into it,
theyre having a really good time with it, I think it is going to
be a really funny show, said Richardson.

committee.
She said the members of council, and
the church, are delighted at the idea of
being able to have the kids play on the
playground while parents, or grandparents, dig away in their gardens.
Water for the garden will be collected
from the church roof and stored in rain
barrels for use. The hope is to keep the
garden open and available for users to
use when they are able to make it. Wilson said they hope to build 24 boxes approximately 4x8x12.
Each gardener will be required to sign
a short agreement outlining general expectations, and then the committee will
take care of the box itself when its not
being used.
As for what to grow, Wilson said many
people do choose to grow some flowers
amongst their vegetables, but typically
in community gardens it is mainly veggies grown.
The best advice I can give to new
gardeners is have an I can do this attitude, have patience, gardening is rarely
an instant gratification activity, and read,
there are lots if great books out there for
new gardeners, said Wilson.
My favourite series is still Lois Holes
Favorites, and dont give up if you have
a failure.
When trying to pick crops to start
with, Wilson offered a short list of what
she would recommend to new gardeners.

United Way funding announced

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Earlier this year the Strathmore United Way was accepting
applications for funding requests. On May 21 Kevin Keegan,
spokesperson for the United Way, made a presentation before town council.
He gave thanks to the town, residents and businesses for
supporting their various fundraising activities, and to the
Calgary United Way and private and corporate donations received.
The Strathmore United Way and partnership committee is
able to assist 12 local, not-for-profit organizations with funding this year. Within our mandate and chosen philosophy of
healthy families, strong communities and (helping promote)
all that kids and seniors can be, it is with great pleasure that
we can announce today that a total of $50,000 for the 2014

1014 Westridge Road, Strathmore AB

funding year has been distributed back into our community,

said Keegan.
It is the hope of this committee that as awareness of our
presence increases, and with your continued support in the
coming years, that we will be able to assist an even greater number of organizations, supporting the programs that
bring our community together.
This year there were a total of 17 organizations who requested funding, and of those 17, 12 of them were given
financial support in some way. The organizations who received contributions were: Bow Valley College; Healthy Families; Community Crisis Society, Growing Families Society
BTG; Growing Families Society Life Skills; Hope Bridges Society for Creative & Continued Learning; Junior Achievement
of Southern Alberta; School Fuel; Step One Housing Society;
Strathmore Municipal Library; Strathmore Wheatland Addictions Team (SWAT) and the Youth Club of Strathmore.

Per diems re-implemented in council

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Discussion about remunerations was
brought to council at the May 21 meeting and had the Mayor stating his disdain at the proposal.
The remunerations policy has not
been amended since 2011.
The only item that we are looking at
is including a per diem, but only for certain events, rather than all meetings et
cetera. Were looking at a maximum of
four days to attend FCM and/or AUMA
and a maximum of four days to attend
spring/fall workshops, said Deputy
Chief Administrative Officer Linda Nelson.
This is basically to reimburse councillors who are out of money through their
normal jobs when they have to miss a
day and miss that pay.
By adding the per diems it will make
it more affordable and will encourage
councillors to attend these critical meetings. Councillor Pat Fule mentioned his
support of the per diems, stating it can
be difficult to lose work and money from
his full-time job to attend some of the
meetings.
This isnt like any kind of a perk, it
essentially allows some of us to attend
without being penalized financially or
time wise and not being able to do it,
said Fule.
Councillor Bob Sobol also spoke in
favour of having them brought in for
those specific meetings. He said the only
real alternative to per diems would be to

Great play
Continued from Page 2
This is honestly what I would call
almost a collective in that the students
have contributed so many ideas, they
have brought in their own costumes,
their own props from home, everyone
has thrown in an idea or two.
There is some mild language and
content that parents may be concerned
about, but Richardson said she hopes
that anyone with questions about the
content will contact her to find out more.
Its based on a movie that the kids
know, its a recognizable title, Im hoping that will draw in audience members
because it is a recognized title, said
Richardson.
She said it will be fun, and that the
script has a lot of humour in it that the
students especially get a kick out of.
The show runs June 5-8 at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased
through a cast member, or by calling the

have day time meetings, but future potential councillors may question joining
council at that point.
I have never thought it fair to actually have a councillor lose money, have it
cost him or her money, to go to a meeting, said Sobol.
If council attended all of the meetings,
four days for each of the conferences
and the fall and spring workshops, it
would be $1,600 per councillor per year.
We did a survey of 16 municipalities,
and out of those 16, 13 do pay per diems, said Nelson.
I do not support the motion to increase councils salary and implementing a per diem is a salary increase, said
Mayor Michael Ell.
The Municipal Government Act allows
councils to set their own remuneration,
something Ell thinks should be considered by the community.
He suggests having an independent
body review the remunerations and
have them report their recommendations to the citizens of Strathmore. Ell
stated he would vote in favour, if an independent committee suggested a pay
raise, but only if it came in effect in
three years, after the next election.
All members of councils salary is
one third tax-free, this tax-free benefit
increases the value of the salary significantly. The tax-free benefit is to be used
to assist municipally elected officials attend to their duties where expenses may
not be recoverable, said Ell.
Ell said it has been noted that some
councillors are reluctant to attend meetings because of the loss of salary from
their full-time jobs, and he respects that
but, We all knew the requirements of
the position before we were sworn in
as members of council, we all accepted
some type of personal restructuring of
our life when we accepted this responsibility, said Ell.
We must keep in mind members of
council are paid every month to carry
out our duties, which includes conferences and training. Councillors should
attend training, and conferences to improve their knowledge on governance
and to keep current on changes in procedures and the laws.

The citizens of Strathmore benefit

when members of councils attend those
and, said Ell, members of council have
expense accounts should expenses need
to be covered so a council member can
attend a conference or workshop.
It is my recommendation a committee review our remuneration. As part of
a remuneration review by the committee I would encourage consideration of
a salary claw-back when a councillor
fails to attend committee meetings or
council meetings without a valid reason
and have an authorized absence, I ask
members of council to vote down this
motion, said Ell.
Fule said he would hate to see council
go down the road where they are penalized for not attending AUMA or FCM.
For him it is not just a matter of having
to pay a substitute teacher, but he would
also lose a day of pensionable salary.
Then it becomes incredibly financially
punitive to him.
Councillor Denise Peterson opposes
any movement for council to vote in
their own increases, but said this is not
the case. It was adequately pointed out
and confirmed that there is a budget and
a limit on what councillors can spend,
and council has approved that amount.
It is already there, so I dont think
this can in any way be conceived as
something over and above what already
exists. In terms of if councillors should
or should not attend councils or workshops, I think our public will be in the
best position to determine how well we
serve that public, said Peterson.
She further stated that she doesnt
think there needs to be a salary-claw
back for councillors who cant attend
the conferences.
I dont think that options including
a salary claw-back for councillors who
now need a doctors note to not attend
town policy meeting, I think when I
look at the dedication I see around this
table from the councillors that exist here
its extraordinary as it is, said Peterson.
She shares committees with some of
the councillors and said meeting attendance has never been a problem. Peterson said it is insulting to the community
and council to think that it is and said
she thinks thats why there are democratic elections.

June is Brain Injury Awareness Month in Canada.
There have been many stories about brain injuries in
sports and motor vehicle crashes that result in lifelong disabilities. The Brain Injury Association of
Canada is dedicated to improving the quality of life
for all Canadians affected by acquired brain injury
and promoting its prevention. If you would like to
donate, go online to CanadaHelps.org
Brachytherapy is a method of treating prostate
cancer by placing tiny radioactive pellets near or in
the tumour. Now this method of treatment is being
used in women with breast cancer as an alternative
to external radiation treatment. Its a radiation
from within method that is used after surgical
removal of a tumour and results in less recurrence
of the cancer.
The substance called agar is a derivative of
seaweed and was first used in culturing bacteria
back in the 1880s and is still used today for the same
purpose.
Perhaps one of the most common causes of
constipation is not heeding the urge to go. We lead
such busy lives that we sometimes ignore what our
bodies are telling us. Not a good idea. If you have to
strain or have hard stools at least 25% of the time or
if you have fewer than three bowel movements per
week you may have constipation.
Constipation can be a troubling condition. Talk to
our pharmacists for advice.

To the Editor
(An open letter to all graduates)
Normally, graduation accolades seek to be outwardly inspirational. They will employ some of the more
common quotes, such as the future belongs to those
who believe in the beauty of their dreams by Eleanor Roosevelt or the infamous Steve Jobs quote Stay
Hungry. Stay foolish, and to their endeavours, they
are successful.
Even inspirational. The truth of the matter is that its
really just another day, in our trivial lives, is it not? In
the grand scheme of the Universe, we are just specks
of biological energy, hurtling around our sun, on a
geothermal adequate rock, are we not?
This could not be further from the truth. Truthfully,
to the best of our knowledge, we are members of the
only sentient species in the known Universe. To the
scientist, this is due to our lack of technology, and
exploration of our surroundings. To those inclined to
religion, we are part of a master design, well beyond
our understanding, but worthy of our worship. Either
way, it matters not. Here we are.
Our understanding of genetics tells us that we are
the products of our environment and our ancestors.
Our genetic code, in a sense, contains all of our history, in fact, it contains the beautiful library of humanity. All of the atrocities and wars that we have waged
upon each other. Every kind act, every sacrifice, every anonymous hero, every parent who has sacrificed
their own comfort, so their child could eat.
Yes, there are the technological and historical figures. Albert Einstein who established the paradigm
within in which we understand theoretical physics
and seek to unify all of the natural forces we encounter. Da Vinci and Picasso have inspired generations
of great artists, who give our minds pleasure with
abstract concepts, like art, that are uniquely human.
Winston Churchill, a politician who inspired a nation
to weather the storm, and to carry forward, in the face
of great tyranny. Tim Berners-Lee and Vint Cerf, designers of the Internet and the World Wide Web have
helped to accumulate, and share all of our human
knowledge. A groundbreaking acceleration of innovation and human achievement. Knowledge is power,
and every citizen of the world is more powerful, than
they have ever been.
While these pioneers have led us to drink from the
fountain of human knowledge, the truth is that we
are all inhabitants of a world with over seven billion
people. The entirety of human momentum, and our
species is encapsulated by our daily mundane acts,
and within our own little worlds, our own ecosystems. Our families, our communities, our churches,
our schools, and our social contract with each other.
This is how we define ourselves. Depending on how
you see the world, we are either genetically driven to
raise the next generation of humanity, or commanded
by divinity to do so, either way, its our existence.

Life is a series of experiences encapsulated in your

mind. The love you have for your children and spouse.
The uniquely human ability to care more about someone else, than you care about yourself. The nervousness you feel up on stage for the first time in front of
a large crowd. The sweaty palms, and racing heart,
right before your first kiss. The pleasure you get when
you stand up for something you believe in, and the
satisfaction of making a sound argument. The anxiety
you feel, when you try as hard as you can, and fail
at something you love. The joy of good times with
friends. Those long discussions around the campfire, or a great discourse over food and wine at the
meal table. The sorrow you feel, in that instant your
brain recalls an experience with a loved one who has
passed. The bonds that we form with a family dog or
beloved pet and the inexplicable grief we field when
this bond is broken.
Due to the way in which we have chosen to construct our society, life means getting up early for
work, working hard, paying bills, changing diapers,
and doing laundry. These mundane tasks are the price
we pay for the pleasures we will enjoy.
Watching our children walk for the first time. The
look of determination on a sick childs face as they
refuse to adhere to the common wisdom of medical
failure, and beat the odds. The pride of accomplishment. The creation of great art or the validation of a
well constructed argument. The authorship of great
works of prose and the written word..
Life means making progress on some days, and disappointment the next. Life is a series of disappointing
events, challenging you to learn from them, and to reduce both the frequency and the impact of mistakes.
Life is living by a moral code, and treating others the
way you want to be treated.
Above all, life is exactly what you make of it. Set
goals for yourself. You will make mistakes, and you
will be defined by how you react to these mistakes.
Humanity is incredibly forgiving. If you fail at first,
you can always try again. If its something that you
truly believe in, you will prevail eventually. If you
work hard at something, you will be good at it.
On this day of your graduation, there will be talk
about the beginning of the rest of your life, but
truthfully, this is your chance to continue the progress of humanity and to add your mark on the human
story, either by greatness, or by regular acts, it matters
not -- we are all contributors. Dont be overwhelmed
by the enormity of your future. Just do your part, it
will come naturally, you just have to work hard at life,
at crucial times.
Dont forget to enjoy the journey of life, and plot as
many waypoints along the way, as you can. Much will
be said about the rat race out there to earn your dollar, but remember you are in a race, the human race.

Spell-a-thon
a success
Congratulations to Shyanne Hassett (l) who raised $562.50 towards the Carseland School spell-a-thon. This Grade 2 student
raised the most money for her school and received the grand
prize of an electric Razor scooter. Glen Ford (r) on behalf of Agrium presented the scooter on May 26. Agrium generously donated $1,000 to the fundraiser to purchase prizes for the students.
Carseland is a small school of 80 students from K-6; they enjoy
field trips to take swimming lessons, golf lessons among other
fun events. The grand total of $1,831.50 will go towards cost of
busing for these events.

Sarcasm served daily!

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Shhhhhh Im writing this column as quietly as
possible, so I need you to read it as quietly as you
can. The hedgehog is right behind my computer
desk, hes awake, and he knows Im here! He now
knows the sound of my voice, and he associates
that voice with supper fresh mealworms! Im
like his own room service, and Ive had to move
around our downstairs family room like a ninja, so
he doesnt hear me! If he hears me, he comes right
to the cage bars and oh crap!
Im back I made the mistake of looking over my
shoulder as I typed this, and the hedgehog and I
made eye contact. He stared me down with that
cute face, and those big eyes, and once again, he
got his food delivery! Hes actually kind of cute and
he does reach out with his paws to touch my hand,
but I think its really just to make sure he gets that
mealworm. Hes definitely the oddest pet Ive ever
had.
Its almost like hes a pet out of sarcasm. Hes all
friendly, cute, and cuddly just to get fed, and then
he dusts off back into his house until Im gone.
I swear Ive heard him chuckling as he waddles
back, belly full of meal worms, another five course
(worm) meal fed to him by the big guy outside his
cage!
I shouldnt really judge him on his sarcasm. I can
be quite sarcastic myself. In fact, having coached Jr.
high, club, and high school basketball for over 25
years - its my sarcasm that got me technical fouls
from referees. At one tournament, I was so frustrated with the lack of calls by a referee, that I asked
him if his whistle actually worked, because only
the other ref made any calls! I was directed to the
hallway for the rest of the game. While out there,
and with my assistant coach running the show, I
had some time to reflect. Just then Sara, one of my
colleagues daughters, came over to me. Sara was
about eight, and asked me why I was in the hall.
Well Sara, its like this, Im kind of on a time out
for something I said in the game. Do you know
what I mean?
Without missing a beat, Sara replied, thats okay
Mr. Fule, I get time outs too. Theyre not so bad.
Well, Im going to really try and be good from now
on, I replied.

Thats what I say, too, Sara replied! Out of the

mouth of babies!
I was pretty good up until my last few season in
senior high girls basketball. In a Chestermere tournament, I had been having some heated discussions with an old referee. I mean he was old
Im not sure if he was actually hired, or he wandered in from a Seniors Lodge! Anyway, I told him
he needed to call more fouls both ways, because
girls had been hurt on both teams, and one had
actually been taken away. Of course, I had gotten
my first technical, and Breanne had told me not to
get another one. I did my best. It was late in the
game, maybe about a minute and a half to go, and
we were going to lose. Just then, one of our girls
was fouled hard in front of our bench, with no call
from him. After we subbed her out, he was pretty
rude as he called for us to get our players back on
the court. I pointed at the hurt girl and said, you
know, when you get your cheque for this game,
you should donate it to charity because you dont
deserve it!
I was directed to the hallway for the rest of the
game. However, I did hear a huge round of laughter at my sarcasm, from the Chestermere boys! It
didnt help me in the hallway, though.
I tried not to be sarcastic this week, but I couldnt
help it. I have a student who is, how shall I say it,
less than industrious. He volunteered to be one of
my volleyball coaches, so he could get PE 20 Service Hours. Needless to say, he only came twice.
Wednesday, I was handing out free t-shirts to my
other coaches as a surprise. He looked at me with
hedgehog-like eyes. Of course, I went to my desk,
and got out a t-shirt. I also took out a pair of scissors. I cut off one sleeve, and delivered him the
sleeve.
Hey, I came twice, he said. Oh yeah, right
sorry, I replied.
I went back to my desk, cut off the other sleeve,
and gave it to him! Sometimes, sarcasm can be a
life lesson!

Teen brings bullying bylaw

suggestions to council
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

On April 16 town council approved
the Community Standards Bylaw. The
bylaw contains provisions for sidewalk
snow removal, signs, control of nuisances, which can includes weeds and
unsightly premises, graffiti and bullying.
At the May 21 meeting Strathmore
teen Jonathan Moore spoke to council
about the anti-bullying part of the bylaw.
In my opinion the amendment to
the bullying bylaw will be ineffectual
due to the fact that this bylaw is mainly
aimed at youth, and that no teenager
would pay attention to a law they are
unaware of it, said Moore.
If we want kids to understand the

importance of bullying and how much

a fine against bullying will cost them,
I propose that council sends two of its
members to each school that this law
pertains to and informs them of the
consequences, the extension and the
fines that bullying entails.
Councillor Brad Walls asked Moore if
he thought it would be better to send a
peace officer to inform the kids. Moore
said that while it would be nice if the
peace officer were there to support the
councillors, it would not be as effective
to just send them.
Since teenagers often hear from
peace officers about various issues I
believe it would be more beneficial for
kids and teens to hear from the council
themselves, that way it can stress s the
importance of the issue, said Moore.
Councillor Denise Peterson said she
had presented his ideas to her students,
and though they arent in Strathmore,
they echoed some of what he was saying and had suggestions of their own
for other parts of the bylaw.
So the students where Mrs. Peterson
works brought up a fun activity and
an idea that I thought I would like to
share. They thought that if people saw
signs in the park that showed times
when the parks are open and fines for

littering that it would be helpful and

that people would be more responsive
to the bylaw, said Moore.
Petersons students also had a fun
suggestion about how to get youth involvement in cleaning up town parks.
So if teens under 18-years-old took
selfies of themselves picking up or
throwing out garbage and sent it to the
town, the town could put it in a draw
and the months of June, July and August pick one or two winners from a
bucket and give them a pass, maybe to
the swimming pool, for the entire winter-long season. That might just maybe
generate a bit more involvement from
the youth, said Moore.
Mayor Michael Ell thanked Moore
and told him he had some really great
ideas to follow up on.
I particularly liked your idea of putting the signs in regards to when the
park may be used, the fines posting
those is a good idea and doing the selfies in regards to cleaning up, said Ell.
Moore was quick to remind Ell that
those ideas were not necessarily his,
but Ell and Peterson agreed that it was
his initiative that generated them, and
that by bringing them to council it
helps them when it comes to making
changes and doing a better job.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS -Joe & Diane Kremer

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Joe was born at Spijk, Holland in 1926, which made him
14 years of age when the Second World War began on May
5, 1940. At the time, he was living with his family in Rotterdam, which was the busiest harbour in Europe. On May
9, German Stuka bombers bombed the centre of the city,
killing over 2,700 people and injuring many more. Holland
surrendered the next day, and the
German occupation began, which
included many horrible atrocities,
mainly against Jews, who were
rounded up and shipped to the
death camps. Joes father was ordered to guard telephone poles, as
they were sabotaged every night.
He was advised that if one of the
poles in his area was sabotaged, he
would be shot.
Diane was born on a river barge
at Rotterdam in October 1937. She
remembers little of the war, apart
from some bombings and the Hunger Winter of 1944. As the Germans
had shipped every edible item to
Germany, there was nothing left
for the Dutch people to eat. They
survived by eating tulip bulbs, dandelions, sugar beets, cats, dogs and birds. In November 1944,
Joe, along with many other males between the ages of 17 to
45, were rounded up and taken to the river where they were
shipped on river barges to Amsterdam, then by a German
destroyer to northern Germany, and from there by train to
Oberhausen, a railroad town where, along with other prisoners, they spent their days repairing the railway tracks, which
almost nightly were bombed by Allied bombers. He was liberated by the American Army in May 1945. Returning home he
was then drafted into the Dutch Army and spent the next five
years fighting an Independence War in the Dutch East Indies,
now known as Indonesia. After returning to civilian life he
became an auto body mechanic.
Joe and Diane met at a Singles Club in Rotterdam, and were
married on October 14, 1981. Both had been married before,
and had children by their first marriages. Joe had four children, one daughter now living in Chestermere, two daughters
living in Holland, and a son now deceased.
Diane also had four children from her first marriage. Unfortunately, two of them are deceased, one from an auto accident
at age six, and the other from illness. Her daughter Marijke
lives in Holland, and her son Tony lives here in Strathmore.
Diane was a mother to her children, then became a housekeeper for a Baron, whose wife had passed away, and his five
children. He was a Director of the Dutch Red Cross.
In May 1981, they flew to Calgary for a vacation with friends,
and on returning home decided life in Canada had more to
offer than staying in Holland, so they applied to immigrate
here. But there was a slight problem - Dianes son Tony was
approaching age 18, where he would automatically be called
up to serve in the Dutch Army. If he moved to Canada before
reaching that age, he would not be called up. So, they quickly
made their arrangements to move to Canada, arriving here on
May 7, 1982. On arriving in Strathmore, Joe continued to work

rs
olf Cou
g

as an auto body mechanic, and Diane,

who initially spoke no English, worked
as a housemaid.
Since 1982, they have lived in Strathmore, Calgary, Carseland, Indus, and
Granum, where Joe served as Deputy
Mayor for a year. Since retiring to Strathmore, they joined the now-closed Bowling Club, are members of the Happy
Gang, and have
participated in both
Square Dancing and
Line Dancing. In
1988, they were part
of the green costumed contingent
at the Opening Ceremonies of the 1988
Winter
Olympic
Games in Calgary,
with over 900 other
square dancers!
They also spent
eight years working as campground
managers in Kananaskis, then worked
with a security company for another six
years. So, Joe actually worked until he
was 80 years old, before retiring.
In 1982 the population of Strathmore
was around 3,000. The biggest change
theyve seen is the population growth,
and the influx of the big box stores.
They thank Canada for permitting
them to immigrate here, where life has
been wonderful.

USING OUR MUSCLES
There is no member of our body
that requires as many muscles as
our tongue, because this member
exceeds all the rest in the number
of its movements.
How many of us have been hurt by
words of somebody in our lives?
The tongue is an amazing thing.
With it we can be the wind under
someones wings or we can take
the wind right out of someones
sails. Whether you are a parent, a
teacher, a supervisor or a friend,
you have an incredible power to
encourage or to deflate someone
with your words.
The Bible tells us in Ephesians not
to let unwholesome talk come out
of your mouths, but only what is
helpful for building others up.
Our words are like toothpaste in
a tube. Once they are out, it is
impossible to take them back. This
makes me realize that I should be
slower to speak and be a better
listener.
Every day we have opportunity to
build someone up and to speak life
to someone. If all we do is criticize
our kids and people around us,
then that is what they will become. I love to see Gods potential
in people rather than looking at
all their mistakes. I love dreaming

A request to extend the contract with H&H Huxted Enterprises Ltd was brought to council at the May 21 town
council meeting. Under the current contract there was a provision that allowed council to extend the contract for one to
two years. Colin Huxted, owner of H&H Huxted Enterprises
Ltd., requested that it be two years, with a few amendments
to the current contract.
The proposed amendments include removing the reference to recycling because it is a separate contract; adding

extension date, which is Dec. 31, 2016; adding the additional

dates of 2015/2016 and inflating the residential rate by three
per cent per year. Previously that rate had been inflated by
four per cent but Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for
the Town Linda Nelson said, Mr. Huxted has stated that he
would just like to be close to the cost of living increase.
Another amendment was to include additional sanctioned
landfills based on merit. The town and contractor can consider any landfill that the two agree upon, based on the merits of the landfill, such as cost savings to the town.
Huxted had told Nelson he would also donate an additional day of Heavy Item Garbage (HIG) pickup to collect
Christmas trees. The unit rates were also updated to reflect
the rates and the additional dwelling unit numbers.
Three Hills landfill has also been added as a sanctioned
landfill site. The rate for their landfill has been added along
with a clause that Huxted will charge a maximum of an additional $27 per tonne for trucking outside of the City of
Calgary, where the cost will result in a savings to the town
of at least $5 a tonne.
The recommendation from council was to approve the
amendments and the extensions until Dec. 31, 2016.
Mayor Michael Ell had a few questions of administration
but his main concern was the removal of the bond of indemnity to the town, the surety bond. Though he knows
it was removed in the past, and he has great confidence
that Huxted will continue to serve the community, Ell said it
caused him some concern.
My thoughts are should something happen to the principle of H&H Huxted, or some sort of disaster befall the company that we cant even conceive of, where does that put the
town in regards to our situation and that causes me some
concern if the performance surety is not there, said Ell.
Nelson said there are a couple of clauses in the agreement under performance failure. The clauses state that if
the contractor fails to perform any of the obligations or the
agreements of the contract then all expenses or expenditures made by or on behalf of the town under the section
would have to be paid by the contractor within 30 days.
The motion to accept the extension and the changes
passed with Ell voting opposed to the motion.

Fire implementation
stumbles over protocol
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Wheatland County council stepped
through a glass door May 20 by finalizing the draft fire implementation
plan recommended by staff; but then
they turned around and held that door
open, to see if the other towns and villages in the county would also step
over the threshold.
The council vote was divided, but
passed, with the main point of debate
centering on who should sign first,
Wheatland County or area towns and
villages. Those votes opposed were
cast by Reeve Glenn Koester, Councillor Rex Harwood and Deputy Reeve
Ben Armstrong.
I would like to hold off because the
villages would be accepting the running of these departments. If we approve this before the villages, it will
seem like they have to approve. It is
a partnership, so I would like to see
this, said Koester.
There was a lengthy process to develop the plan and all fire departments,
towns and village councils were given
the opportunity to contribute to the
plan.
It is often hard to get consensus.
We had 26 parties to work with and
sometimes it was a challenge. It was a
great process and everyone was heard.
Instead of going to one model there
are several choices. I believe this is at
a stage where we can move forward,
said Emergency Services Manager Judy
Unsworth.
A second motion followed the di-

vided vote, indicating a letter of acceptance should be sent to the towns

and villages, requesting they confirm
their acceptance. All Wheatland council agreed to this motion.
The need for clear communication
and recognition of boundaries was evident in feedback letters from village
councils that were submitted to Wheatland County about the plan and posted
on their website www.wheatlandcounty.ca . These can be viewed along with
the plan, under agendas and minutes
May 20.
There is general support and positive agreement in the county with most
of the proposed items and actions in
the plan, which address issues on a
three tier urgent need basis. However,
there were still some exceptions voiced
about the process.
We believe you have crossed the
line and are now intruding into the affairs of our municipality. The tone of
your report and its conclusions leave
us wondering if you understand the
concept of partnership and consultation. Our council is aware and appreciates how difficult your task is in
reforming fire service throughout the
county, but the way in which you are
proceeding seems clumsy and not to
be working very well indeed, Hussar
Village Council said in a statement.
This review and implementation
plans from this point forward need to
recognize the other municipalities and
their contributions to the fire departments, Leah Jensen, Chief Administrative Officer for the Village of Standard.
All parties in the discussions agreed

Youre Invited

that help was needed for associations

and fire departments that were struggling, such as Gleichen, Strathmore
Rural and Carseland, but they unanimously voiced financial and governance decisions should remain with
municipal councils and area fire associations. There were also finer points
of plan like equipment decisions and
fire crew training sessions once a week
that were questioned. A modified training schedule was suggested, along
with local decision making on equipment needs.
Many of the points in the plan are
already being put into action. For example, TJ Maynard was appointed Fire
Chief for the Gleichen and Cluny Fire
Department. Discussions with Siksika
Nation are commencing regarding assisted service agreements, and Chief
Administrative Officer for the county
Alan Parkin and staff are helping to get
several associations back on track. Other actions already in play in each fire
department are noted in the document.
The governance review for Strathmore
Rural and Carseland is being compiled
and will come to council June 9.
The question remains: now that
council has accepted the draft plan
as final, what will happen if the other
villages and municipalities dont send
letters of acceptance for the fire implementation plan.
Staff pointed out that under the Municipal Governance Act, the county has
a duty to ensure fire service is available
to its ratepayers and if consensus isnt
reached, it will have some difficult decisions in the future.

AUMA Resolution defeated

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

With the annual AUMA (Alberta Urban Municipalities
Association) convention coming up in September, time is
running out to submit resolutions to be considered. These
resolutions are looked at and considered by municipalities
across the province.
The deadline for resolution entries is May 31, and Mayor
Michael Ell had one for council to consider submitting.
Ells suggestion was for AUMA to request that the Government of Alberta include provisions within the Municipal
Government Act (MGA) that will require municipalities to
review councils remunerations, prior to each election within
an election year, by a committee made up of public members
of each individual community.
Councillor Brad Walls made a motion to submit the resolution for consideration to call for mandatory public involvement in council remuneration review.
Councillor Denise Peterson questioned why it would need
to be brought forward to the province for consideration
when many municipalities already do this in their communities and they have capacity from their community to do this
themselves.
I dont know if it would necessarily be better, this is just
an option that I would put forward. With the request for
changes to the Municipal Government Act that was sort of
the motivating factor for me to bring this forward at this
time, this is an option that council can put into their own
policy if they wish, said Ell.
Peterson further stated that when seeking nomination to
council she made a promise that she would not ever vote
for her own raise in council, and that when council appoint
committees she would do her best to ensure they are ethical
but knows theres all kinds of opportunities for the manipulation to happen. She wanted reassurance that the committee will remain ethical.
Ell said he cant give those reassurances, but said that
members of council could come up with the best possible
solutions to strike the committee, keeping it non-biased, and
then the committee could come back with the best recommendation they can make. Ell was not sure how the committee would be made up, but said it should be with total
involvement of council.
In light of that my position will be to vote against this
resolution because I do believe that our administration and
our community can probably do a better job of deciding
council remuneration than the province can, Peterson.
Councillor Rocky Blokland is against it, saying that in the

STRATHMORE SHOP REGAL is pleased to announce the
Official Launch of our Community Collaborations Program
Our First Collaborator being Featured in Store this
week is Kristel Lang from Norwex. If you have not had
a chance to see these amazing Quality Cleaning Products for
your home, I invite you to come check them out, you will not be
dissapointed!
You can contact Brenda @ Strathmore Shop Regals Sales Centre located within Curves at #5 - 104 Strathaven Drive | 403.934.8516

during the SPRINGFEST & Parade of GARAGE SALES!
Okay so maybe youve read about this and maybe not, either way youre probably wondering,
What Is Community Collaborations and what does it have to do with Strathmore Shop Regal
and Norwex, and Why Does it Say its located inside Curves ?
Well, let me try to weave some understanding into this.
First, for those who have never heard of Regal Gifts before, it truly is a Canadian Tradition dating
back to 1928, that has earned its reputation as a long standing household name. A large segment
of the Canadian population has fond memories of selling, fundraising and shopping with Canadas
Premier Direct Selling Catalogue. Regal is known for its unique products that include greeting
cards, gift wrap, handy household helpers, kitchen gadgets, home & seasonal dcor, personal health
aids and unique family gifts, all sold at great prices with the average items priced $20 or under. It
is sold mostly through Catalog & Online Sales and Independent Representatives who manage their
own micro~businesses. There really is no other catalog quite like it in the Canadian market.
So who is Strathmore Shop Regal?...
Well because we are Independent Regal Representatives, let me introduce myself. My name is
Brenda Graff and I have sold Regal Gifts since 1977, but more recently, I have had the great
honour to personally serve and meet many wonderful people from the Strathmore and Wheatland
County Area who have also become loyal customers, friends and companions since April 2009. I
also offer Regals e-Catalogue service to all Canadians via my online webstore, www.Strathmore.
shopRegal.ca which is provided to me through Regal Gifts Corporation.
Fast forward five years later, I am pleased to announce the opening of my Local Order Sales Centre
and Micro-Shop in the Community of Strathaven, you can find us at this address # 5 - 104
Strathaven Drive., Strathmore, Alberta located right next (actually within) Curves.
Here in this tiny shop we will showcase many of the hard-to-find functional products and unique
gifts which Regal has been known for over the past eight decades in the Canadian home shopping
arena. We also plan to extend an offer to other home-based business owners to showcase right along
side us. This program will be featured as Community Collaborations.
Our new location in town will add great convenience, especially to our rural customers, offering
them a central location for quick pickup of orders. It also provides us an opportunity to become
more community focused and add additional services to our identity.

Seniors week is coming up, June 2-8,
and this year there are all sorts of activities being planned.
FCSS in conjunction with several
other organizations have put together quite a fun filled week, so if youre
a senior youll be very lucky to be living in Strathmore for the week of June
2 through 8, said Dahrlyne Knaus with
Strathmore FCSS.
Seniors are very important to our
community and they make a difference
in our community every day. This is just
one way of acknowledging their contribution and to show how much they
are appreciated, said FCSS Coordinator
Catherine Walsh.
Strathmore FCSS has partnered with
other community groups so we can collectively provide a fun filled week for all
seniors. Seniors Week Seniors Rock

that the more activities we can provide,

Strathmore Shop Regal is poised to present such an opportunity inside their local branded new sales
centre. The plan is to network with other Home Based Businesses in and around our community,
and lend support by offering affordable exposure in-shop to feature some of their product alongside
ours. Even though our physical entity is micro in nature, we believe that by weaving our products
and services together, rather than simply competing for sales, we jointly present a macro shopping
experience to the consumer. By sharing a vested interest in each others business, we can also
share entrepreneurial strengths and skills. Such a model of healthy collaborative business within
a community, invokes a deeper trust and patronage from our current customers, strengthening
the communities economy, and encouraging more residents to shop from the smaller home-based
businesses; most of whom are constantly in a struggle to compete with the big box stores and major
brands to make a living.

So Really, What Is This Offer ?

Well first off, it may seem a bit of an odd idea to most but I believe its an offer that many of you
have been seeking for, I know I always did.
Ask yourself this
What if, you could have just one tiny piece of shelf in your local store to display your products?
What if, instead of just allowing your small business card to lie on the counter next to the till they
would frame it and hang it where everyone coming in could see? What if, a customer asked about
a product the store does not carry, BUT they know you might, AND were excited to
quickly call you to see when you could deliver? And What if, all that could be
possible without unrealistic long term contracts, outrageously high cost per square
footage, and came with a sort of part-time sales clerk as well? Ill bet some of
those What if s are beginning to sound more like As if s right now? Well I am
prepared to offer those what if s !!!
Go ahead and Read through those What if s again and if any of it resonates
with your business mind, then I think we should chat, and soon!

community exposure, then I invite your inquiries on becoming a Collaborator with us at Strathmore

Students from Strathmore High School, Holy

county competed on May 21 at Strathmore

successful competitors will have gone on to
compete at zones on May 27 in Calgary. Last

Super Series seeks sponsorship

ARYSSAH STANKEVITSCH

Crystal Stevens is organizing the third annual Super Series event at the Strathmore Ag Grounds for July 5-6, a
youth-based rodeo for kids ages five to 16. Last year, Stevens had over 420 entries.
Were hoping for that again. That usually works out to
about 100-120 kids. Thats pretty exciting, Stevens said,
who organizes with her husband Jim, along with Christa
and Gerald Aleman. They compete in all events.
There are 20 different categories including team roping,
breakaway, barrels, pole bending, goat tying, steer daubing
(junior steer wrestling, wild pony racing, and sheep riding.
Steer daubing, wild pony racing, and the sheep riding
are definitely orientated towards the little people, Stevens
said. Shes had entries from as far as the U.S. border and as
far north as Fort Saskatchewan; theres no limit as to how
many events each child can do.
The average winners from the two days will go home
with jackets, while buckles will be awarded to the highest
point totals. Kids can also compete on July 5 with a fundraiser parent-child team-roping event.

Stevens is currently looking for sponsorship to put on

the event.
Thats the only way we can make it work. The Ag
Grounds are donated to us, but everything else is sponsored, Stevens said, noting that Agrium and other local
businesses are assisting with donations for prizes, food,
renting stock and other needs. Anyone can volunteer their
time as well.
Stevens goal is keep kids in rodeo and keep that passion
alive at a young age.
I believe were making a difference, she said. I think
the population of kids in rodeo has increased in the last
eight or nine years. Theres more awareness. Theres communities like Claresholm and Nanton that are doing a lot
more youth events. Weve just followed suit.
Rather than other sports, rodeo builds a bond with animals and creates a sense of community, too.
Its a big family sport, were always together, Stevens
said. It teaches the responsibility of looking after an animal. It gives them that competitive edge too; its good to
win, its good to lose. It teaches them sportsmanship.

The midget Strathmore Reds

traveled to Libby, Montana for the
Wood Bat Classic from May 10-11,
with a very successful turnout.
The Reds went 4-0, winning the
tournament final by a score of 2-1.
We were really happy, coach
Zane Anderson said. It was really
our first tournament all year.
The tournament featured teams
from Montana and British Columbia; the Reds felt strong about
their defensive gloves, but feel
they need to get their bats going.
The hitting is coming - we
scored enough runs to win obviously, but overall it was a good
weekend, Anderson said. Our
pitchers were very good, and
threw a lot of strikes.
The Reds were close to repeating their Libby success in Lethbridge from May 17-18 at the Ron
Matthews Memorial Tournament,
but dropped in the final to the
hosts 10-7.
Our first four games were really good - just like the Montana
tournament, Anderson said. The
Reds won their four round robin
matches, and were seeded number one going into the playoff
round.
We only had about nine or
ten players, Anderson said. I
dont know if its an excuse but,
we were short on guys and we
played five games. We just didnt
play as good a ball game as we
could have, but thats the way it
goes.
The Lethbridge tournament,
Anderson found, was much more
offensive because of the metal
bats that were used, where the
ball can come off much faster
and much more frequently due to
a larger sweet spot; Libby was a
wooden-bat tournament.
Theres a little bit of difference
between wood bats and metal
bats, he said. We like wood bats
because it really teaches the players how to hit.
The Strathmore Reds have their
next tournament in Sherwood
Park on May 31.

against Highwood. The Spartans even called up
a Grade 9 player from Crowther Memorial Junior
High School to make sure they were fully covered
for the Highwood game.
We had people playing brand new positions,
Steele said, but didnt believe that led to the loss.
We still could have won.
Steele thinks it was more of the teams errors
during the match that set them back, including a
try scored against from a kick off. They could have
moved on to zones already with that win.
In my opinion, we won 15 minutes of the game,
but you cant lose 10 minutes we gave them an
easy try. Its hard to get those back. We had lots of
opportunities but just didnt get through, Steele
said.
Steele and the Spartans lost to Chestermere on
May 9 by a score of 14-12.
They came out hitting hard. They were big and
put a lot of pressure on, he said. We know what
were up against, we need to respond earlier. If we
dont give up the ball, theres no reason why we
cant beat them.

In their last game of the year on May 21 against
Highwood High School, the Strathmore High
School Spartans dropped 20-17 at the Calgary
Rugby Union. Now, they must play for a spot to
advance to zones.
From now on, we just have to keep winning,
coach Brad Steele said. The boys battled Chestermere High School on May 29 (result not available
at press time) for a spot at zones May 30-31. Chestermere actually finished ahead of the Spartans in
the league standings.
But both of us are on the lower part. Because
we have so many teams, we dont have time to
play everyone off, Steele said.
Four of the eight zone teams will advance
some could be schools the Spartans have never
seen. However, Steele isnt worried.
What weve been practicing is just keeping
possession of the ball, just controlling the ball. If
we can do that, well be fine, he said.

Calgary Rugby Union would thus take the league title.

The girls game was a much closer game than the score
would reveal, Spartan coach Jerry Flaws said.
Highwood had very strong, fast wings, Flaws mentioned,
that caught Strathmore off guard. Strathmore High School
was up by five at the half, with Highwood scoring at the start
of the second, to grab a two-point lead.
Once we made the adjustments to slow down their wings,
it was a much better game, Flaws said. They just ran wild
the first half.
The Spartans finished with three tries in the last six minutes of the game, winning 52-27.
It gives us the number one rank going into zones, Flaws
said of the May 30-31 event. Weve beaten all these teams
already, but we havent beat them by much. I would like to
win zones. Thats our goal this year.
The only squad the Spartans dropped to this year was Vulcan who will not be at zones, but will likely be at provincials. Vulcan is sitting fifth in the south area zone.
Thats how strong the south zone is, Flaws said. For provincials well know after zones but well probably come
in at a third or fourth rank.
Flaws believes the top two teams from the south zone will
go first and second at provincials come June 6-7, also at the
Calgary Rugby Union.
Were fighting for a bronze medal I think, he said.

Ready for fun

Chrissy Craig fundraising coordinator
(back row, l-r) along side volunteers Jim
Dunlop, Corrie Carrobourg and Derrick Jacobson are proud of the work
everyone involved has put into the new
community playground in Langdon. The
Bambino structure, along with the older
childrens structure cost $130,000.
The fundraising committee raised one
third of the amount, and with the help
of grants from the county and Alberta
government, they were able to purchase this 2014 Play World model for
the whole town to enjoy.

Dozabo
debuts
ARYSSAH STANKEVITSCH
Times Reporter

The Dozabo Soccer Camp run by
former professional player Jose Dozabo
made its debut in Strathmore on May
20 at Wheatland Elementary. The camp
runs every Tuesday evening, teaching
two groups technique, rhythm, coordination, balance, and ball handling.
Ive been playing soccer all my life,
and I played a high level in Honduras, Dozabo said. I was approached
by some parents to help their kids to
develop skills. How the idea came to
Strathmore, was that I was approached
by more parents. They were traveling
too far to Calgary.
Dozabo has been coaching for over
ten years, but has run the camp in Calgary for the past five years. Those interested beginners to experts are still
invited to register for either the minor
group (ages four to 16) or adult group
(ages 17 and up).
Its pretty much the same for both
groups, it all depends on how much
theyve been playing, Dozabo said.
Some adults, they havent played in
a while, so they pretty much have to
go to the basics. It all depends on how
advanced they are; you could go from
very basic skills to a high level.
Dozabo preaches full body control
for his students, moving one step at a
time.
You have to master that; air control,
ground control, their headers, their
touches, their movement. Before, I do
all that tactical before I go into technical, he said. If you throw me into a
hockey game and dont show me how
to skate, Im not going to be very good.
Dozabo uses a special instrument
with his students dubbed the Dozabo
Technique which is a strap that holds
the ball to keep the body aligned, but
provides finesse and freedom.
You can imitate the same, with or
without the strap, he said. They get
frustrated and bored if they kick the
ball once and they have to go chase
it again. When they have the ball and
have control, they dont feel like they
have to get rid of it all the time.
Go to www.dozabo.com for more
info.

My Grandpa and Grandma came to Canada in 1907 from Indiana.
They rented a boxcar to carry their furniture, machinery, horses, buggy and all their personal belongings. One person was allowed to travel
along with the rented boxcar and because they could not afford to buy
another ticket, Grandma had to ride as a stowaway. Both of them had
a University Degree. Grandpas was in English and Literature and he
was a Teacher. I cant recall what Grandmas degree was in. I spent
a lot of time with my Grandpa and Grandma so I heard lots of stories.
Over the years, one of the jobs Grandma had was driving the school
bus. In those days a school bus was a horse and buggy.

Did you know?

Sadly, I announce the death of my mother Mickey. She

is survived by her daughter Sally Weber (Stan) and grandchildren Travis Weber (Margo), Bryce Weber, Krista Burnett, Blain Weber ten great
grandchildren numerous relatives and friends. Her Granddaughter
Lydia, her former husband Norman Jones, and her six siblings predeceased her. Mickey was born in Olds Alberta where she lived until
the early forties. Her Dad gave her a Model T Ford, named Henryetta,
for her sixteenth birthday. Her girlfriends formed Mickeys Gang, a
group of tomboyish, fun loving, girls who enjoyed outdoor activities
like camping and sports such as womens hockey and baseball. They
loved adventure and were always travelling about in Henryetta. After
graduation in 1938 Mom took Teacher training and taught at many
one- room schools around the Olds area and in Empress. In 1942
she married Norm Jones and they worked tirelessly to build a future.
Together they bought cars, fixed them up and resold them. Mom was
a great diagnostic person and a good mechanic as well. In 1945 they
bought a General Motors and a John Deere Dealership in Strathmore.
With the income from the dealerships they purchased some farmland
east of Strathmore. They eventually parlayed this into a ranch near
Claresholm. Mom was an avid curler and football fan. She had Stampeder season tickets for over 50 years. Her ladies team travelled to local bonspiels, where they had lots of fun and usually came home with
a prize. Mom of course was the skip. In 1963 we moved to Calgary
where my father had a real estate business. My parents divorced in
the late sixties and Mom began her dream of seeing the world. She
took an overseas trip every year as well as Canadian adventures. In
the seventies she joined the Skyline Hikers. She hiked in the Rockies
and also overseas. In her later years she travelled with my family internationally often bringing our five children to meet us for the holiday.
It seemed effortless to her but I now dont know how she ever did this.
Mickey was honest, kind, straight- forward, loving, and extremely witty and fun loving. She was accepting, tolerant, and embraced change
and differences of opinion with ease after a feisty debate. Mom loved
people and I dont think anyone ever dislike her. We are all grateful and
privileged to have had her in our lives.
Please join us for a celebration of her life at the Calgary Winter Club,
June 14, 1:30 pm. If convenient please RVSP to sally@sgweber.ca or
phone 403-948-7273. Her favorite charity was Operation Eyesight,
operationeyesight.com, or 403-283-6323.

Louis Mckinnon and Dick Benz were prize catches in their prime.
They were also excellent dancers.

Heres a cute story:

A farmer in the Three Hills area put an ad in the paper:

Lost Horses Reward Fall
A farmer in Carseland (Alan Bishops Grandpa Riley) farmed in the
area and did not have his own team of horses. He worked with my
Grandpa Galon. Alans Grandfather Riley went out searching for the
lost team. When he found them he took them home, kept them over
the winter and used them to put in his own crop in the spring. This free
help also meant he did not have to go out and work for anyone else.
When he was done with the horses he returned them to the owner
and collected the reward. All this helped him, so from that point on he
was self-sufficient.

Your memory is our keepsake.
With which well never part.

DiD you know?

decks are becoming more and more of an issue
in the purchase process.

As a Seller it is important to know 2 key points;

it is essential that you have all the permits in place for your
deck to help the sale process to go smoothly.
if you built the deck or modified the deck in any way there is
a good chance you will need to have your real Property report (rPr) updated as a result.

Dont hesitate to give one of our

possession. If they arent when the time comes for you to sell the responsibility to ensure
these components are in place falls upon you.
if you have any questions or concerns regarding your deck come on in to Aztec Real Estate
inc. and pick up an information pamphlet on the requirements of your deck to meet code.
