Gleichen has a long-standing tradition of honouring the contributions of soldiers involved in combat. While their respects go to those serving in any branch of military service, they have many names of local residents that fought in wars today and in the century past. Their memorial cenotaph records the names of those fallen in battle: three during the Boer War in Africa, 51 soldiers in WWI and 13 in WWII. Fortunately, the two local people who served in the Korean War and two that recently fought in Afghanistan came home alive. Remembrance Day services in Gleichen on Nov. 11 will begin at 9:45 a.m. and run to 10:55 a.m., at the Community Hall. The guest speaker will be Royal Canadian Mounted Police Staff Sergeant James McLaren, who recently received a Governor Generals Medal for Bravery, for trying to rescue a suicidal man from icy waters in Cape Dorset, Nunavut in 2009. He is going to be speaking on all his deployment experiences. He previously served in Kosovo, said Doris Lindman, spokesperson for the Memorial committee. From the Community Hall, at 10:55 a.m., there will be a march to the cenotaph to lay wreaths and then on to the Field of Honour at the cemetery. The committee petitioned the County of Wheatland to rename a street in honour of the veterans. It has been renamed Veterans Avenue. It starts at Hasgain Avenue running up to the Gleichen arena. There will be some changes to the ceremonial flagpole when weather permits. They will be designating one flagpole in front of the court building for the cenotaph. The second pole will be moved to the community centre. The existing cenotaph pole will be moved to the cemetery field of honour. The County of Wheatland is also looking into upgrades necessary for the cemetery as a whole.

shAnnon LeCLAir Times Reporter The smell of pancakes and maple syrup filled the hallways of Westmount Elementary School on Oct. 30. Three students, Aaron Maudsley-Tetz in Grade 6, Bryce Wenstrom in Grade 4 and Reece Heckle Grade 5 asked for donations, cooked pancakes and then served them to their school mates for $2 a plate. Teachers elect a student from their classroom. That student takes part in the challenge program. Every six weeks a new group of kids are selected. The three boys sold the pancakes for $2 a plate to raise money for the playground. Thanks to the support from Wal-Mart and Sobeys, it didnt cost the boys anything to be able to put on the breakfast. Thats the only thing the school is trying to raise for right now, the big thing, said Maudsley-Tetz about why they chose the playground committee. Wenstrom made the calls asking for support, and Heckle did a lot of the planning. Maudsley-Tetz said all three of them helped with cooking and organizing everything. There are three other groups currently working on projects. There is a group going to the seniors lodge to make poppies for Remembrance Day. The students working on Remembrance Day things were thinking about volunteerism and what that means. They realized going to the war is a big way of being a volunteer and being a citizen. There is a group who will be volunteering their time at the library. They learn that through volunteer hours the library receives funding from the government so not only is this helping them, the library, its helping their project as well. The whole theme for the entire year is citizenship in action, said teacher Jill Gron. The fourth group of students spent most of last week preparing for the upcoming bake sale. The funds collected from the bake sale will also be used towards the new playground equipment the school is looking to purchase.

Christmas Hamper to kick off this weekend

AshAd MukAdAM Times Contributor The 27th annual Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper will kick off this weekend. Starting Nov. 10, a total of 14 donation bins for the Christmas Hamper will be placed at various locations around Strathmore and the surrounding area. The Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society has said that food, cash, and toy donations will be welcome. We expect much the same rise in need for these hampers and appeal to the generosity of the people in Strathmore and the surrounding areas, said Society Chairman Dave Collins. Collins pointed not only to an 11 per cent rise in the use of the services of the Strathmore Food Bank, but also to a study conducted in Ontario which talked about how people in smaller centres tended to earn less than the average wage that those in larger centres earned. That seems to the be case in our area, with most recipients being fully employed but having to make tough choices at this time of the year between paying bills, and toys for the kids and a treat on the table, he said. To generate awareness of the campaign, the Society has already run a serious advertising campaign. We have run ads in the local media and have asked people to send donations to certain locations, said Collins. The Society also has enlisted the help of all the local schools in the campaign. We have asked the local schools to bring in toys and toiletries, with different items being asked for each week, said Collins. We then channel the donations into different huts for distribution to the families. The hamper donations are much more generous. The value of food in the hampers is around $400, plus we give a sack of toys for any children the family may have. The Societys fundraising target for this year is $110,000 to $120,000, which is made up of half food and half cash. All of the food will be channelled to the Hamper Society. Distribution of the hampers begins Dec. 17 and 18, and runs through from Christmas to January. To volunteer for the Christmas Hamper, please contact the Society directly at (403) 934-5335.

Sleeping with the dinosaurs

Manny everett Times Contributor Dinosaurs behind them, dinosaurs beside them, dinosaurs over them, dinosaurs everywhere! As part of the Social Studies and Science curriculum this year, the Grade 3 and 4 students from Standard School have been studying about different countries and where they are in the world, as well as rocks and minerals. The Grade 4 Social next year is about Alberta with a dinosaur theme. To give the students a good understanding of this the class went on a field trip to the Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller and participated in an overnight eduTour. The students were joined by their friends from the Grades 4-6 classes from Rockyford School in this joint overnight trip. The students participated in a virtual hike (due to the inclement weather) as well as participated in four hands-on activities entitled Ancient Alberta Rocks, Fossil Casting, Raptors in Action, and Dinosaurs in Movies. The program was jam packed with other fun things to do in Drumheller. The students and chaperones had an opportunity to swim at the Drumheller Aquaplex on the Wednesday, and Thursday they visited Reptile World. A huge and exciting experience by far was the opportunity to sleep under the dinosaurs at the Museum in the evening. Some of the responses from the students are as follows: The best was the Badlands Hike, it wasnt a real hike because of the snow. We got to pick drivers to take us on the tour of Drumheller (they were crazy drivers, only pretend). I learned a lot about Drumheller that I didnt know about before. There is a grain elevator and a coal mine, and many, many fossil castings

of dinosaurs. I really liked the story about Black Beauty; her head was so big that they could only make a cast of it. We saw triceratops, pterodactyls and have course the Albertasaurus, said nine year-old Houston Burrell. The best thing about the Museum was fossil casting. You get to make a cast of a real fossil using the same filling cement like a dentist uses making mouth guards. Once they were done (cured), we got them back at the school and were able to paint them and take them home. Raptors in Action was really fun. We were split into groups and got raptor legs with a claw at the end. We had to break through a piece of paper and then get out the elastic that was in the container. We raced against 6 other kids [it was kind of like playing a real game of Operation except we got to be the Raptors]. I want to go again and see everything that I missed seeing, said Vickie Laerke, age 9.

Web classes make learning easier to access

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Wheatland Further Education has added new Business IQ and Business Link webinar classes to their programs list this year. The classes are run by professionals and broadcasted across the province, and are offered at a fraction of the cost to the students. I would consider them valuable, low cost web learning sessions for individuals and business owners, said area coordinator Joyce Bazant. Youre going to walk away learning something. Whats nice is theyre right here, you walk in spend your hour and you leave. Wheatland Further Education is offering the programs in conjunction with the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce to bring the business type classes to Strathmore. The Business IQ classes offer things like Simply Accounting and other programs that are a little more in-depth than some of the webcast classes being offered. Another benefit to online learning is that the classes are held at different times throughout the day. Some are in the evening, some in the morning. Some last an hour and others maybe two hours. Online learning is becoming more popular but still may not be for everyone. It costs twice as much for the student if an instructor was brought in and placed at the front of a class. Bazant said the students are still getting the same value, but at a fraction of the cost. If there are questions, they are typed in and the instructor will answer them. The new office is open in the Country Lane Mall Office and Wheatland Further Education has use of the boardroom, which opens up the range of classes they will now be able to offer. If someone has something they would like to see brought to Strathmore if they contact us then well do our best to get it here, said Bazant. All our classes are groups sessions but our webinar classes weve done with as few as two or three people and as many of eight or ten. Im quite excited about these because I think its nice that its coming to Strathmore and we dont have to travel to get this. Were looking for more of that type of classes. The mandate is adult learning, but they are in community learning and teach a variety of age groups. Pre-registration is preferred and unless a course is cancelled people will be able to register right up until the day of a session. Anyone looking for more information about the classes can pick up a 2012 Fall Course Calendar from the Wheatland Further Education Office located in the Chamber of Commerce office at Country Lane Mall. Or you can call Joyce at 403-934-5785, Candace at 403-901-1506 or Lynn at 403-901-0833.

Capsule Comments
During the flu season, pharmacists often hear comments like Im pretty healthy, I dont need a flu shot. Flu shots protect not only you but the people around you, especially babies under the age of six months and older people with chronic diseases. There is safety in numbers because the more people that get their flu shots, the fewer will get the flu. Its early stages for researchers in Australia who are developing a micro motor, about the size of a grain of salt. It will be used in clearing up clots in blood vessels in the brain where surgery is unable to work. It promises to be extremely useful in navigating through the convoluted blood vessels in the brain. In 2011, 1803 organ transplants were performed in Canada. Over 4000 Canadians still wait for transplants, 75% of them for a kidney. In 2011, 195 Canadians died waiting for organ transplants. Are you an organ donor? If not, sign up today. About 8% of 8 year-olds still wet their beds at night occasionally. However, this problem doesnt usually signify a major problem and will usually resolve on its own. It can distress the child and sometimes simply restricting fluid intake at night will work. There are alarm systems available to remind the child to go to the bathroom at night. Medications are also available. Ask our pharmacists. Our pharmacists have access to solutions to many healthcare problems. We are always willing to talk to you and give you information to help you solve yours.

westmount
Westmounts elementary school held a Halloween dance on Oct. 25. The dance ran from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and was organized by the Westmount School playground committee to raise funds for Westmounts playground project. The event raised about $1,180. Currently the playground committee has raised approximately $120,000 of the $300,000 project price tag. The committee will be applying for further grants with the hope that they will get about $125,000. The Westmount School Parent Council will be donating further funds from their casino that they completed in October. Hopefully with the grant funds, the casino funds and one or two more fundraisers we will be able to install the new playground in the spring of 2013.

Countrywide celebrations to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth IIs accession to the Throne have touched a local military veterans life. On Nov. 12, at the Stettler Legion, Crowfoot riding MP Kevin Sorenson will present Ron Howard with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Jenny Schumann and Irene Knapp of the Royal Canadian Legion #10 in Strathmore nominated him, and will accompany Howard and his wife Joanna to the ceremony. When I got the letter, I was quite pleased, said Howard. It kind of puts the icing on the cake for all the organizations I support. The ripple effect of receiving this medal, by the Governor General for Her Majesty, is that it sends the honour out to all the organizations I belong to. I am just the point man on it. Commemorative medals are awarded by the Governor Generals office, to mark special anniversaries or special occasions. They are typically awarded to recognize contributions made by Canadians, for significant contributions and achievement, within a broad spectrum of society. There are four other commemorative medals created in Canada. They include the Canadian Centennial Medal (1967), the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977), the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal (1992), and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2002). There are 60,000 Diamond Jubilee award medals distributed during 2012 ceremonies, though only thirty are designated for this constituency. In the past, Howard was awarded the 1967 Canadian Centennial Medal and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. Howard thinks he was selected due to his military and volunteer contributions. His military career extends over 54 years. In 1958, he started as a cadet. In 1963,at the age of 18, he enrolled in the Regular Canadian Army and was

posted to Germany in a peace-keeping role. He also served in the Middle East with NATO forces. He left the service in 1975 with a Queens Commission and rank of Second Lieutenant. In 1982, he joined the Army Reserves and continued through to 1984. It was a great experience for me I wouldnt have missed it for the world. It was an experience that moulded me, Howard said about his military service. He currently is a member at large of the Army Cadet League of CanadaAlberta Branch, a member of Branch 10 of the Royal Canadian Legion, a liaison officer for the local 903 Cadet squadron, and a member of the Lord Strathconas Royal Horse Brigade serving as their secretary/treasurer. Howard is also a strong advocate for veteran rights. Howard also encourages people to volunteer, not only in military organizations. He anticipates his fellow medal recipients will come from all walks of life. Even without the awards, he considers volunteer work fulfilling. Give back to the community. It is important not to isolate yourself. There are a lot of things for people to do. As for the new medal, Howard will wear it on his dress uniform, amongst the many medals he has gained over a lifetime. There are strict rules for the appropriate display of the Governor General medal. The medal can only be worn by the awarded person. It must hang on the persons left shoulder, in a certain order to other medals. It is to be worn on ceremonial days or special occasions and only with business dress, formal dress attire, or uniforms. Howard says he will have to have his medals moved over to make a space for the new addition. His decorations include: Special service medal with NATO bar, Canadian Peace keeping medal, United Nations Cypress medal,1967 Canadian Centennial medal, Golden Jubilee medal 2002, the new Diamond Jubilee medal, Canadian Decoration, Army Cadet League of Canada and Air Cadet Service medals and Knight of the Order of Constantine.

hers. I wonder what her response would be? Would she call this other kid an fn idiot as well? Could this be a start of bullying? Bullying is not new and is happening at all ages. Our children are just more susceptible to it because they are young, impressionable and in a socially demanding environment during most of the week. As a final thought, bullying happens every day between adults and goes unpunished. How many of you have been the victim of/or witnessed a person who tailgates on the highway? Tailgating is a dangerous version of bullying and can lead to accidents and deaths. Our kids are watching us lets get rid of bullying at the source. Sincerely, Robert Antonisse, Strathmore

Monkey see, monkey do!

To the Editor First, I would like to congratulate Emma Mae for having the courage and strength to come out with her story about bullying. In her story, she talks of a boy in her class that bullys her and hits her and shes given the excuse that the boy has a rough life at home, etc. As a parent, I think it is our responsibility not only to teach our children not to bully, but also to live that way. An example I witnessed a man (around 40 years-old) verbally assault an elderly women in front of his daughter (maybe 9 or 10 years-old) because the elderly lady had parked too close to his truck and he had to wait 30 seconds for her to get into her van and drive away. All I could think about is this girl going to her school on her bike, after school comes out and she finds someone has parked their bike against

Local group honoured by award

To the Editor On behalf of all the volunteers at the Festival of Lights we were honored to receive the Community Spirit award at the Chamber of Commerce Business awards. We would like to thank the person or persons that nominated us for this award, the judges for selecting us, and the Chamber of Commerce for hosting the evening. The Festival of Lights was started five years ago by a small group of people. They had a vision! There are many people that make this park happen today, all contribute their own talents. It is cold outside when we are able to set up the park so we appreciate all the help we can get. We are fortunate to have an electrician on board. Last year seven miles of extension cords were used to light up the park. Last year saw over 3,000 children and adults attend opening night. Christmas Eve saw over 400 through the gates. From opening night to the close of the Park during the second week of January, approximately 12,000 people have visited our Christmas Park. Dreams we have many! But that will be next years project. Plan to come down to the park on opening night Nov. 24 to see what is new. And consider entering a float in the Santa Claus Parade the same evening. Vi Giesbrecht, Strathmore

Dedication to preserving and commemorating Canadas military heritage

To the Editor I am a member of The War Amps Operation Legacy, which consists of young members and graduates of the Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program who are dedicated to preserving and commemorating Canadas military heritage by teaching younger generations about our nations wartime history. I have had the privilege to learn about Canadas military heritage and also know what it is like to live without a limb a strong bond that I share with war amputee veterans. CHAMP was started by war amputee veterans and I want to give back to those who have given me so much. It is important to remember our military heritage because so many men and women have given up their lives for our country and our freedom. By remembering, we are keeping their legacy alive, and acknowledging their hardships, and we are continuously thankful for the peace they helped us achieve. I encourage all of you to learn more about Canadas history by means of The War Amps Military Heritage Series documentaries, which can be ordered at waramps.ca Sincerely, Kylie Besplug, Operation Legacy Member, Lethbridge, AB

Traditions and holidays disappearing

To the Editor When I was growing up, Halloween at school was a fun filled day with costumes, games and excitement. I remember wearing my Tweety Bird costume and blindly sticking my hands in a bowl of cold spaghetti and peeled grapes while being told it was brains and eyeballs. Now its Orange and Black Day. I fully understand and respect that not everyone believes in or celebrates Halloween and Christmas. Canada is a very diverse country with all nationalities, religions and beliefs. Thats what makes it great. But we, along with the rest of North America, have been celebrating Halloween with costumes and trick or treating since the early 1950s. It seems that all it takes is one complaint from a person who decides that they dont like it or that they dont believe in it, and our traditions are changed. Why are we changing for these people? What about the rest of us? As for Christmas, its not Seasons Greetings, its Merry Christmas. If it wasnt for Christmas, there wouldnt be a holiday. For the people who complain about Christmas, do you take advantage of the days off work and the store sales? You dont have to celebrate it, but dont expect me to change what I say or celebrate because of your beliefs. Im not asking you to change yours; Im asking you to respect mine. Christmas has become so materialistic, that everyone celebrates it now anyways. Its a Santa and present day; no longer a religious holiday. Take a moment to look back at where it all began before you pick and choose which advantages you want out of it. I was recently told of a situation where an employee didnt want to participate in a Christmas gift exchange at work because he didnt believe in Christmas. Fair enough. But when it came time to schedule Christmas Holidays, he didnt want to work on Christmas Day either. Make up your mind! Everything is changing because everyone is afraid of being Politically Incorrect. We never used to be. People were more accepting. So why, as a country, are we changing now? This is Canada. We should be proud to live in Canada. We should be proud of our traditions. We should fight for our traditions. Happy Belated Halloween and Merry Early Christmas everyone! Heather J. Benevides, Calgary (formerly of Strathmore)

Voting for a worthwhile cause

To the Editor We all know that Strathmore is booming. We have more and more young families moving into town. With growth comes problems. While there are opportunities for young people to get involved in Scouts, Air Cadets and organized sports programs, many families cannot afford to pay the extra costs even when the price is small. Some kids just arent suited to these programs and so these individuals tend to fall through the cracks. With little or nothing constructive to do, these youth end up becoming youth at risk. At risk of falling under the influence of negative peer pressure. At risk of following the path of vandalism leading to violence. At risk of experimenting with substances that can lead to drug addiction and even death. At risk of dropping out of school which limits future opportunities. The list is endless. Our Strathmore Youth Club has been struggling to give our children and grandchildren better choices but really, they do not have the money to make it happen. What would they do if they had some money? Make the Youth Centre a fun place to go! Make it the resource it should be. Better kitchen facilities will help all ages. A computer room with updated equipment would be very popular as not everyone has a computer or can afford Internet. The same can be said of a games area with a big screen TV and some games consoles. Consider having extended hours, live music, a graffiti wall, programs for antibullying, self-esteem as our Facebook title says, The Possibilities are Endless. So how do we do this? Tax money? No. Fund raising, no again. We have a chance at $75,000 from the Aviva Community Fund. If we can get enough votes then we can win some money and help our community. If we help the young people then we eventually help everyone because we are a community. Lets make sure that every youth not only has a safe place but that safe place is fun. Positive change, which is sustainable, will give us a healthier, happier group of young people in Strathmore and area. Register at www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/ acf14604 or go to Facebook: The Possibilities are Endless. Everyone gets one vote a day for a total of 15 votes between Nov. 12-26. Please check out Action TIPS on page two for step-by-step instructions. Sincerely Heather Roberts, Strathmore

Remembrance Day
Pat Fule Fule for Thought This part of November is a sombre time for many. Its our chance to show respect and thanks for the men and women who have served in our Armed Forces. Whether or not they battled, they have made many sacrifices so that we can be safe. Whenever I go to the Remembrance Day services, I am always touched and saddened at the calling off of Strathmores lost soldiers from the wars. To think that these soldiers were not much older than my Grade 12s, is very chilling. They went off young, brave, and innocent of what they were to face. I cant imagine how terrible it must have been for them all. The men who fought in either of the World Wars represent a willingness to sacrifice for others. In fact, Tom Brokaw, the former news anchorman from the U.S. has described that earlier generation as The Greatest Generation. He states in his book that they are the greatest generation any society has ever produced. Men and women fought not for fame and recognition, but because it was the right thing to do. (Brokaw) The WWII soldiers would have grown up and faced the hardships of the Great Depression, only to go on and battle in a huge world war. It is humbling to think of all that my generation has had, and we have not had to endure what they did. We are the ones who benefitted from those who were willing to fight, and often die. So, we still have time to do a small thing that is still right for them. Buying poppies to wear is an act that can help financially struggling vets. There is still time this week to sacrifice some of our funds to help those who fought to help us. We can still make a difference in older vets lives. At the Co-Op this week, I saw a man who already wore a poppy, but put in a 10 dollar bill, obviously just to help. He inspired me to do the same with all my change, too. Having been to the Remembrance Day services in Strathmore, I am always impressed at the large crowd, and the fact that parents bring their children. Its important to keep these past soldiers in our minds, and especially our hearts. They were someones child, sweetheart, or best friend and often they never got a chance to return to these loved ones. Thank you to all who fought for us, and for those of you who have been in the military since WWII. I know that there are so many of us who really do appreciate all that you have done. We will remember. Shake off winter with Rosebud River Valley Boys

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor The Rosebud River Valley Boys (RRVB) will be heating up the winter in Strathmore, with lively bluegrass gospel and folk tunes. The attraction of the bluegrass gospel is that it is corporate music. Lots of harmonies, instrumentals, and great group synergy. Bluegrass is a contagious music that is popular from kids of two to 92, said Royal Sproule, spokesperson for the band. Intimate rural venues are some of the favourite venues for RRVB. Sproule said the audience can expect a funfilled evening of foot-stomping music, comedy, and heartfelt ballads, an evening for the whole family. Members of the band are Bill Hamm, Lewis Frere, Royal Sproule, Jason Bertsch, Mark Lewandowski, Nathan Schmidt, and Keith Hamm. However, the band started with only two members in the late eighties, with Sproule on banjo and Bill Hamm on guitar. Campfire accompaniment added bluegrass tunes from The Beginning Bluegrass Instruction Book, leading to their first gig at Strathmores Whooper Upper Days, busking for coins with an open guitar case. Additions to the band occurred in the summer of 1990, for Rosebud Theatres Cotton Patch Gospel. Tim Erickson, administrator at the time, played fiddle and Mark Lewandowski learned stand- up bass to flesh out the sound. They loved playing so much they began writing new tunes, entering competitions, playing festivals, touring and recording albums. They later added Lewis Frere, vocalist/guitar and Jason Bertsch. The guys stayed busy until the married members of the band began to have families. Now the boys assemble themselves together for a concert a year. It is more of a reunion than anything.
Advertiorial

Lots of fun, lots of energy, said Royal Sproule. All the members of RRVB pursue the other facets of the arts. Royal is a visual artist, theatre and film actor. Mark, Bill, and Lewis are all involved in theatre. Lewis and Jason also play in various rock bands. None of the boys know when the next RRVB concert will be. However, two of the members, Lewis & Royal, have their own folk duo and will be performing across Alberta. Check their schedule out at lewisandroyal.com. Rosebud has a radio show, ROSEBUD ON RADIO that can be caught on 1140 AM radio. Sometimes youll even hear some RRVB tunes on it.To preview the band check out YouTube. The band has produced CDs, which can be purchased after the concert. The Strathmore concert is to support the Hope Bridges Society, which supports the Arts in the community and encourages equal opportunities for participation and enjoyment of the Arts. A portion of the funds from the concert will be used to offset the cost of our upcoming 2013 workshop program expenses such as facilitator fees, supplies for participants, space rental and advertising. This allows Hope Bridges to subsidize participant workshop fees for those who cannot afford a full fee. It supports our Everyone is Welcome principle. No one should be excluded from participating due to financial burden, said Sheila Konschuh, organizer for the event. The fun begins at 7 p.m., at Hope Community Covenant Church on Nov. 15. The audience will also be able to sample sweet temptations from the dessert bar that will finish off a great musical evening. Please call Sheila Konschuh at 403-734-0179, or Hope Bridges Office at 403-983-3640 for tickets: Adults $35, Seniors $25, Children 14 and under $15.

November is Seniors Falls Prevention Month

Lori Anne Schultz Rural Rehabilitation, Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone

Community Falls Prevention Education Initiative

Anyone can fall, but as you age the risk increases. Falls are the leading cause of serious injury in older adults. Every year, 1 in 3 Alberta seniors will fall. The good news is that you can take steps to prevent falls. Research shows that falls are a serious and growing problem for Albertans. According to the Alberta Centre for Injury Control & Research (ACICR), about 62,500 seniors fall every year in Alberta. In 2006, fall-related injuries among seniors resulted in more than 6,900 hospital admissions and 18,700 emergency department visits. What can cause a fall? We know that the risk of falling and being injured increases as people get older, but falling is not a normal part of getting older. Falls are the result of a complex interaction of a wide variety of factors, one of which is age. Some of these risk factors include rushing and hurrying, poor balance and/

or weak legs, a fear of falling, taking the wrong dose of medications, or unsafe conditions in or outside of your home. What can be done to prevent a fall? First and foremost, it is very important to tell your doctor or health provider if you have had a recent fall. Second, seniors living in the rural communities of Gleichen, Siksika, Strathmore, Carseland, Rockyford and Standard can attend one of the six Finding Balance presen-

tations. Finding Balance focuses on educating seniors on proven interventions such as improving health and fitness, making ones home safer and reviewing medications. These education sessions are part of a local Community Falls Prevention Education Initiative developed through a partnership between Alberta Health Services, the Rural Primary Care Network and Growing Families Society-Bridging the Gap Program.

RCMP Briefs
Light airpLane accident
On Nov. 4, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Strathmore RCMP responded to a call that a light plane had crashed in a field near Indus. Upon arriving at the location it was learned that a small single engine aircraft had experienced engine problems while in flight. Unable to make it back to the Indus Airfield, the pilot managed to bring the airplane to the ground in the field. As it slowed along the ground the front of the plane sunk into the softer ground resulting in it flipping over frontward where it came to rest on its top. Despite the dispatch of ambulance and fire personnel as an early precautionary measure it was learned that neither of the two occupants of the plane were injured in this event. Other than some significant damage to the aircraft no other property damage occurred. No fuel or fluids leaked from the plane, which has since been removed from the field. Alcohol was not a factor and there are no charges are pending at this time.

Strathmore Municipal Library undergoing needs assessment review

AshAd MukAdAM Times Contributor The Strathmore Municipal Library is currently undergoing a needs assessment review to determine future uses and needs of the library. The needs assessment was required as a result of the demands being put on the current facility that the Strathmore Library uses. We are in a facility that is not in any way able to meet current demand, said Director of Library Services with the Strathmore Municipal Library Jesse Traquair. We are doing this needs assessment for a soft idea to get some guidelines for the future. The needs assessment is being conducted by two consulting firms: Library Planning Consultants and RC Consultants, two firms that have a long history with the Strathmore Library and the Marigold Library System. The library is getting information for the needs assessment via a variety of different methods. We are currently getting public input through a paper and an online survey, said Traquair. Weve also distributed surveys to the school boards, and we are interviewing community groups, the town and county councils, and the librarys board and staff. Traquair said that the needs assessment will give the library an idea of how to manage its growth. We will use this needs assessment to determine if we need to expand our current facility or to build a new facility for the library. He also said the assessment will help with fundraising efforts for the library. We are also going to use this to help identify potential funders, as well as have something to prove to current and potential sponsors about the needs that our library has. The needs assessment will run through to early 2013, and the final report on the study should be ready no later than February, although Traquair is confident that the report will be done sooner than that. Traquair also said that he is hopeful for the future. This is a very interesting process, he said. I hope to see the library grow, and this needs assessment allows for those guidelines for growth (that we can follow).

The poem, In Flanders Field, was written by a Canadian doctor, Lt.-Col. John McRae, after his friend was killed in the 1915 war. McRaes anger and anguish surfaced when he had to act as chaplain at the service for his friend. He wrote the poem in 20 minutes.

Strathmore students take part in Halloween Food Drive

Jenna GiGanteLLi Times Jr Reporter Halloween: it is a night of ghosts, ghouls, witches, princesses, children running house to house, and candy. It can also be a time of giving to those in need. Approximately 40 students from Strathmore High School took part in the annual Student Leadership Council Food Drive on Oct. 31. The students were split up into groups and they scavenged the town, going from house to house collecting non-perishable food items for the food bank. Throughout the course of the evening about seven trunks were filled to the brim with food donations. Along with food, the youth were also collecting pennies for the schools Me to We club. Me to We is a group of students dedicated to making a difference to impoverished people all around the world. The pennies and other money collected are going toward building a school in Africa. The evening was a huge success for both of the groups. The students were aided by Councillor John Rempel, who volunteered to drive the bus, brought coats and mitts to some of the collectors who looked cold, and refused to take any money for the amazing work he did. He even helped in the delivery process once all food was collected. Unfortunately due to the cold weather, not all of the houses in town were visited. If you have any food or penny donations you would like to give, feel free to drop them off at Strathmore High School in the donation bins located outside of the Student Services office.

JulyStrathmore Park was officially renamed Lambert Park. The land was provided by the CPR on a 99-year lease at a rental of 1 cent per year. The Town and CPR spent $1,500 on improvements.

Aspen Crossing prepares to light the night with annual Lane of Lights
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Aspen Crossing was busy this past weekend as they prepared the displays for the opening of the second annual Lane of Lights. The Lane will feature 22 displays this year, and will open for the season on Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. If you want to put a display in for your organization, or company or just your family, you just contact us and well assign you a spot. We pay for the power, you need to put the display up, and provide the lights, said organizer Leslie Benner. Weve got a lot of really cool, new displays coming this year. Large items are coming in, so were pretty pumped about that. The other thing were doing new this year, because were doing the food bank donation, on Friday and Saturday nights were going to host little get togethers down in our gingerbread house where you can drop your donations off and grab a hot chocolate. The gingerbread house is one of the camp group buildings and the lights adorning it are made to look like candies and other goodies. The Vulcan Tourism and Trek Station, the Vulcan Chamber of Commerce, and the Carseland Fire Department are a few of the different groups who will be hosting a night. Basically our hope is to create more community awareness and spirit, said Benner. Approximately 2,000 people attended the Lane of Lights last year, and the hope is to see at least that many through the park this year. Drop by for a cup of hot chocolate, meet our hosts and warm up by the fire. If you want to walk through you can, walk around the Lane of Lights and leave a donation, said Benner. The annual Christmas Market will also be taking place at Aspen Crossing from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Nov. 17 and 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Nov. 18. To become involved with the Lane of Lights contact Leslie Benner from Aspen Crossing at 1-403-534-2129 or by e-mail at info@aspencrossing.com.

Viva Las Carseland

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter A little bit of Vegas style is coming to Carseland on Nov. 16 with the Viva Las Carseland Ladies night. The night begins when the doors open at 7 p.m. There will be slot machines and four to five fun games with prizes to be won. There will be a raffle, door prizes, and a grand prize that is a mystery trip raffle worth $1,000. We are also getting some of those slushy machines so the girls can either have a slushy drink, alcoholic or nonalcoholic, we have both. We also have drivers if anybody needs a driver. We will have a driver who will drive their vehicle home as well as drive them home, said organizer Rhonda Cleveland. Elvis will also be in the building, selling 50/50 tickets and chatting up the ladies. The Carseland PB Club has held casinos in the past and typically would alternate years with Indus. A ladies night also used to be a somewhat regular occurrence but fell to the wayside. Quite a few women in the community missed having one, and so it was decided to bring ladies night back for the Carseland Ladies. Its nice for ladies to get together and have a nice visit and to support the kids in our community, and it will be a lot of fun. Its not very often that moms and ladies just get to have fun, said Cleveland laughing. The funds will be going to the Carseland Kids Coalition and we are supporting the school, we donate to the school and to the scouts and any kids thing in Carseland, said Cleveland. The community has also just begun working on bringing in a water park and some of the funds will be donated to that as well. To date approximately 60 per cent of the 300 tickets have been sold. Tickets can be purchased for $30 at the ATB bank in Carseland, or at the door on the night of the event.

Giving back where they can

At the end of October, along with their regular two-week food drive, the students of Holy Cross Colligate held a special one day food drive for the food bank in Brooks. As an added incentive to boost donations, students who brought food items for the Brooks drive were allowed to wear hats to their classes for the full day. The Brooks drive netted 558 food items while the regular drive brought in 498 for a total of 1,056 items collected by Holy Cross students.

SAY okay pathway project

Jenna GiGanteLLi Times Jr Reporter The Strathmore Assembly of Youth has been working hard on their newest project for this year, mapping out all of the different pathways in Strathmore. Whether the paths are rocky, paved, intended for joggers or rollerbladers, they will soon be known to all citizens of Strathmore. Over the summer, the youth involved in SAY have updated the maps the town previously had, identifying many more routes that a lot of people were unaware of. The plan of action for the rest of the year is to develop a pamphlet with all of the different kinds of paths (bike, walk, paved, gravel, long, short, etc.) to be available not only in paper form, but also online so users can access it from a smart phone. This way, it will be available all throughout town whenever it is needed. The map will display pictures of landmarks, lengths of paths, fun facts about the town and more! Stay tuned to see SAYs completed project this spring!

The Poppy Is a Symbol of Wartime Remembrance

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
To this day McCraes poem remains among the most memorable war poems ever written. It also paved the way for the poppy flower to be one of the most recognized symbols of wartime remembrance. Thousands of poppies are placed on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and Remembrance Day participants wear poppies on their lapels.

Remembrance Day Remembrance Day

in Canada is a day to commemorate members of the armed forces.

is observed each year on November 11 because that marks the official end of World War I in 1918. On that day, the Germans officially signed the armistice, an agreement that officially put an end to the fighting in WWI. That's one reason why Remembrance Day is often referred to as Armistice Day. Though the day has a significant connection to World War I, it also honors the men and women who fought for Canada in World War II, the Korean War and those who continue to serve in the military. Over the years, more than 1.5 million Canadians have fought for their country and to defend the rights and freedoms of non-Canadians as well. Among the Remembrance Day traditions is the wearing of poppies, which are worn as the symbol of remembrance and a reminder of the blood-red flower that grows on the former battlefields of France and Belgium.

Let Us Always REMEMBER...

On Remembrance Day, reflect on war through the lens of the cross... see everything through Christs sacrifice. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. --John 15:13

REMEMBRANCE DAY 1999 - - - - as life continues on

Theresa DesjarDins Gibeau November 11, 2009
They say tis the last Remembrance Day of the 20th Century A century that saw too many wars - - I recall my Dad speak of men who came back from the Boer War When he was just a lad He had no T.V. or radio to tell him of the horrors of war But somehow, through his tone of voice and his somber countenance He let me know how terrible it must have been And as I grew older, we talked of World War 1 - - and I wondered - - How come he didnt go to foreign lands to fight for freedom? He answered simply - - I was farming and they needed food Such a simple answer and now the history books explain it The German U boats took their toll Supplies and food that never reached the British shores Not only soldiers, but English citizens too must have bread Then one September day in 1939 My vision of my world as a 9 year old changed As the radio announcer said, Canada has declared war Frightening words - although not really understood Yet underlined by the worried looks of my mother and grandmother I walked out into the sunlight of that warm September day But my heart felt heavy; what was this Declaration of War? I knew I must tell Dad, and I heard his hammer tapping As he prepared to store this years harvest of wheat And I felt secure - - he was a farmer - And the world would need his wheat I told him war had been declared But still I wondered what that really meant Id seen pictures of World War 1 in history books Men and horses dying, and mud and trenches But life continued on Little did I know that World War II would bring its own horrors Planes with bombs so powerful - - whole cities reduced to rubble Totally destroyed, and lives snuffed out long before their time The rationing and shortages - - that didnt seem so bad To support the war effort was the least that we could do And being a depression child, I didnt miss what Id never had But I will never forget that Sunday at church, early in the war When news came of the death of a Gleichen soldier overseas I can still see his mother, and still feel the grief That enveloped the congregation that sad morning This was War - - - I began to understand How many more? And life continued on I saw the trains as they moved our troops across the country And then they crossed the ocean to battle for our freedom Airmen in their air force blue, khaki clad soldiers Too young to march to war; sailors in their navy blue All young and eager faces ready for adventure Some returned - - others never did; they gave their lives So you and I could live in peace The young and eager faces changed - at times their eyes stared into space Perhaps remembering a buddy theyd never see again - The horrors they had seen could not be erased by wars end, or Even by the joy of coming home And life continued on. Two more years, I thought, and I could join The Womens Division R.C.A.F. No need, just a sigh of relief The end of war in 1945 brought jubilant celebrations But for one fifteen year old, a time of wondering What would peace be like? - - for how long ? - - what a price to pay! And life continued on. The thoughts go on and on, but really My life was barely touched by war Compared to many others To those who lost a father, son, brother, husband These are the ones who really know, what war is all about And life continued on. Now Remembrance Day 2009 Life has continued on Yesterday the 132nd Canadian soldier buried-Brought home from Afghanistan For me, seventy years later A whole life time --- and still The world has not learned I havent got the answer any clearer now Its the same as it was in 1939 Maybe greed, intolerance, power, control, There IS only one answer LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOUR SELF --Will it ever be given a chance? And life continues on.

All soldiers, past & present.

Lest we forget.

On Remembrance Day, Canadians honour fellow citizens who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Throughout Canadas history, men and women have stood up for our values, our freedoms, and our way of life. They have accepted the risk of placing their own lives on the line on behalf of their families, friends, neighbours and fellow Canadians. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month every year, we thank all of our military Veterans and take a moment to remember the men and women who gave their lives standing up for our freedom and way of life. Canadians fought in WWI (626,736 served 66,573 died); WWII (1,081,865 served 44,927 died); the Korean War (26,791 served 516 died and 1558 were wounded); the Gulf War (4074 served); and in Afghanistan (25,000 served on a rotational basis and 158 died). Throughout our large riding of Crowfoot, remarkable numbers of constituents young and old attend events to commemorate Canadas Veterans, particularly on Remembrance Day. Many Canadian military veterans live in our riding. As your Member of Parliament, each year I deliver the Government of Canadas Veterans Week message and lay the Remembrance Day Wreath at one or more of our local Cenotaphs. My speeches on these occasions recall and share the experience I had in 2008 representing Canada in France and Belgium to mark the 90th Anniversary of the End of the First World War.

In 2010, when I was the Chair of the Special Committee on Canadas Mission in Afghanistan, I had the privilege of travelling to Afghanistan and met many of the 2,800 Canadians who were there at that time performing the difficult handson work of Canadas Mission in Afghanistan. As well, I met numerous Afghanis, government officials, military personnel and local citizens. Afghanistan has been a nation in conflict for many decades. I could see in the eyes of the folks I met that they yearned for a time when they could live in peace free of persecution and violence. Many spoke of concerns for their families and the hopes they had for future generations. Coming from our area of Alberta, my reaction to the state of life I saw in Afghanistan was that it was a prime example of what years ago, our Canadian military helped prevent from happening here at home, and across the Free World. While the horrors of war must never be forgotten, we must also remember that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. We must never fail to defend it, whether at home or abroad. I hope everyone will take part in one of the many Remembrance Day ceremonies in our community. And on behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and our federal government, I wish to thank the men and women currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces as well as all those who have served in the past. Lest we forget. Royal Canadian Legion 86 years young

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

In 1925 in Winnipeg, Manitoba the Royal Canadian Legion was first founded. It was in 1926 when it was incorporated by special Act of Parliament, with the charter issued in July. The Strathmore branch has been in existence almost as long as the Legion itself, gaining its charter in October of 1926. Were the largest non-profit veterans organization in Canada, said Strathmore Branch President Jenny Schumann. So we keep the memory of the veterans alive, the people who have fought in World Wars (and other wars) and keep that memory alive through the Remembrance Day (ceremony). We support through the poppy campaign all their widows, kids and the surviving veterans from past wars and conflicts that are ongoing. The Legion has strived to secure adequate pensions and benefits for veterans and their dependents by advocating with the federal government, said Schumann. The Legion also offers bursaries to the kids, grandkids and great grandkids of veterans. Schumann herself joined 20 years ago. Her father and grandfather were both veterans, which made her eligible to become an associate member. Now theyve opened up the categories so if you dont have anyone serving in (your family) but if you believe in the cause of the Legion, you can become an affiliate member, and that is for someone who just believes in the cause, said Schumann. The Ladies Auxiliary also is looking for members. They take care of the funerals in the branch, they host a breakfast the third Sunday of every month and Schumann said the Ladies Auxiliary is the backbone and really strong in the Legion. The cause of the Legion is to support your community and the veterans. Membership in Strathmore has been growing, something Schumann attributes to the fact that the town is growing. We would like to get younger people in here. A lot of people think its an old boys club and 20 years ago when I came in here my girlfriend said, Jenny come down to the Legion, I was very

intimidated, said Schumann. (Now) I think its a nice place to come in if you want to have a cocktail or a drink or something, you dont have to yell, you can sit, you can have a conversation, its fun. Its a very, very close knit family. She said the atmosphere is very like the old sitcom Cheers, everyone is friends and everyone knows your name and theyre like an extension of your family. Its home, I couldnt imagine my life without it, said Schumann. When she first joined the Strathmore Legion there were over 600 members. The numbers are slowly starting to pick up again, and they are currently sitting at 475 members. The commitment level the Legion is looking for in its members is for them to help volunteer with some of the many events the Legion helps with in town. Some of those include the annual pancake breakfast during the Strathmore Stampede, Canada Day and other events around town. The Legion also supports programs for seniors, community housing, youth, Long Term Care, education, sports, cadets, Guides and Scouts, and many other community organizations. Last year the Strathmore Branch spent $10,995 to help put in a unit at the Strathmore hospital for veterans and seniors. On Nov. 2 a press release was sent out about Veterans Transition to Civilian Life and the Legion is going to be supporting it with $500,000 to help veterans across Canada. It is the only program of its kind in Canada that assists veterans in their transition back to civilian life, and has received the full endorsement for national expansion from Royal Canadian Legion along with $500,000 spread over the next two years. Originally established in 1997 by the University of British Columbia as the Veterans Transition Program with funding from the Legion BC/Yukon Command, the free program addresses the invisible wounds of service personnel to help them recover and regain a healthy, full life. If anyone is interested in becoming a member of the Legion, the best way is to contact the Legion at 403-934-5119, or to go directly to the branch and ask to speak to the membership chairman.

We will always remember the courage of those who fought for our freedom.

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO PAID THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE

In 2009, Calgary business man Murray McCann was touched by how the community of Menlo, Georgia, with a population fewer than 500, was commemorating those of their community who had given their lives in wars. After thinking how fortunate his own life was, and the sacrifice our own Canadian Soldiers have made, he realized that we could have the same kind of display. After returning to Calgary, he contacted his long time friend, George Bittman, of the Calgary Poppy Fund with his idea of erecting a cross for every soldier from Southern Alberta who had lost their life fighting for our freedom. With Mr. Bittmans enthusiasm, and Mr. McCanns funding, a close bond developed, and The Field of Crosses Memorial Project was born. Mr Bittmans dream was to have other municipalities in Alberta to honour their own war dead by putting up crosses of their own. In keeping Mr. Bittmans dream, Strathmore Legion #10, is proud to join in The Field of Crosses Memorial Project this year. With the help of the Ladies Auxiliary in funding the project, all 42 names on our cenotaph will be inscribed on a cross with the soldiers rank, regiment, date of death and age of death, if known. The Canadian Army Veterans (Hill 62) will be volunteering to put the stakes in the ground for these crosses to be mounted in. Without the help of Laura Bittman (The Late George Bittmans Daughter), and Legion Volunteers this project would not be possible. The Strathmore Legion has continued to progress through this pass year helping our Veterans, seniors, and Youth alike. Remembrance must be made for the living, as well as those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The disabled veterans, RCMP members, widows, widowers, orphans and family members of those who served are always in our hearts and minds. Although we all may not have the same opinion on how to get the job done, we must remember why we are here in the Legion. Its the Soldier, not the Reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. Its the Soldier, not the Poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. Its the Soldier, not the Politician, that ensures our right to Life, Liberty & the Security of the Person. Its the Soldier, not the Campus Organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. Its the Soldier, not the Lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. Its the Soldier, not the Preacher, who has given us freedom of religion. Its the Soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, whose coffin Is draped by the flag and who allows the protester to burn the flag.

May and Joe at Rosebud Opera House

Manny everett Times Contributor Christmas is around the corner, and what better time to be reminded of the miracles surrounding the season. The Rosebud School of the Arts is proud to present their new homegrown show May and Joe for the Christmas season. This tender, whimsical story engages in us the sense of wonder and excitement that surrounds the possibility of a modern day miracle. May (Lauren DeGraaf) and Joe (Aaron Krogman) are flush with young and innocent love, says Morris Ertman, Rosebud Artistic Director and co-author of May and Joe. When Mays suddenly expecting and the baby isnt Joes it triggers a crisis of faith. May says its a miracle baby, but how is a person expected to believe something like that these days? Amid the crisis, the tender songs of young love fill the air with the occasional undertone of familiar carols and hymns played by the three piece angel band of Sarah Penner on piano, Joel Stephenson on the upright bass and Paul Zacharias, the composer of the original songs in the show, as the guitarist. The band is just as integral to the story as the actors, because they make an incredible contribution to this musical, actively interacting with the story. This three piece band has to deliver Handels Hallelujah chorus, and they do deliver when the moment arises, he

Maritime fairytale comes to Rosebud

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter When one thinks Alberta one doesnt think about the rolling seas and the high cliff walls of the ocean. But that is exactly what Rosebud School of the Art (RSA) student Amy Burks is hoping people will envision with her final student project The Selkie Wife. The tale was written by playwright Mary J. Eden and was inspired by the ancient Irish folklore of the Selkie. The Selkie is a mythical creature that can shape-shift from a seal to a human. The Selkie Wife tells the tale of Driscoll Murphy, an Irish Canadian fisherman and his wife Muirin. I was drawn to the relationship between Driscoll and Muirin. Their love ebbs and flows like a tide, and is ultimately something neither of them can hold on to, said Burks in a press release.
Rosebud Theatres Christmas Production may and Joe began earlier this month and will run until Dec. 22.

said. A wonderful and vital contribution to the story is the arrival of the 2,000 yearold angel Gabriel played by resident actor Nathan Schmidt. Ertman says, Nathan is poised to bring both a wonderful comedic, yet poignant understanding of an ancient being who is haunted by a dark part of the traditional Bethlehem story that we seldom talk about. A happy ending awaits the young couple and the angel after their own personal struggles with accepting the miracles that are presented to each of them. For more information or to purchase tickets for this Christmas show or any of the upcoming productions in the 2013 season call 1-800-267-7553, or online www.rosebudtheatre.com.

Burks felt empathy for Muirin, a woman who is struggling to find meaning in her life and turns to nature for some sort of relief. I think she is a woman who is very real somewhere in all of us. Eden wrote the play for a playwrights course at the Rosebud School of the Arts. RSA alumni, fellow students and a duo of live musicians will help Burks bring her production, and Edens words, to life on the Rosebud studio stage. The show will run for one hour beginning with a 7 p.m. show on Nov. 11. The following shows are Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and on Nov. 13 at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling 403.677.2015 or emailing seeingblindproductions@gmail.com. Due to the strong language of the play and some violent/sexual content, The Selkie Wife is not recommended for children under the age of 18.

Humourous tales from Rwanda

More facts. Less friction.

Sarah WatSon Rwanda, A Land of a Thousand Hills. The name has taken on new meaning for me as I have had the opportunity to travel the countryside, and I would say, a thousand hills perhaps doesnt do it justice. The breathtaking landscape is incredible. Mountains, rainforests, volcanoes, rolling hills throughout; photo opportunities everywhere you turn. It is quite incredible. Some of my numerous experiences have been quite humorous and others a bit mindboggling. Im going to attempt to give you a snapshot into some of these amazing experiences so you can have a taste of my Rwandan life. Thanksgiving Have you ever thought about what it would be like to cook a Thanksgiving dinner for eight people in Africa? Well, Im about to enlighten you. First of all, there is no just going to the grocery store and buying what you need. You have to go an adventure to search out what you need, make various trips on the back of motos (taxi dirt bikes) and bargain for everything you are buying. The tricky part is when you have found the majority of your stuff, you now need to attempt to gracefully clamber upon the back of a moto (after telling him where you need to go and bargaining for a price), while balancing a helmet that is three sizes too big on your head and still managing to hold all your groceries. That is the easy part. Then comes the challenge, to stay on the bike, while your hands are otherwise occupied trying to cling to your belongings and purchases while weaving in and out of traffic. Next comes my road. My road is virtually non-existent these days as the rains keep washing more and more of it away so its a bit like off-roading except that there is on-coming traffic and pedestrians everywhere! Then there is me, trying to stay on the moto-bike without losing the helmet, my purse or any of my purchases. Finally we arrive at home and now the fun begins. First off, all the vegetables needed to be washed and to wash them you need to boil water and then cool it down.

Theres exciting news in the field of natural gas development to share with you. Actually 2 kilometres under the field to be precise.

12111MC0 12071MC0

From there I peeled and cut the veggies with an extremely dull knife, so dull in fact, that Im pretty sure it would be hard to cut an over-ripe banana with it! Also managed (with some help) to mash 4kg of potatoes with a fork. In the midst of all this are the ants, mosquitos, flies and fruit flies trying to get at my food! So, everything is wrapped in tinfoil (which I was brilliant enough to buy yesterday!) Next comes using the oven. At this point, Im not quite sure what temperature the oven is at, but it feels hot! Because the oven is so small, I will not be able to put anything in the oven to keep it warm while I cook the rest of the food, so here is to hoping the gravy heats the rest of peoples food up! Because our knives are so dull (the two we have) I ripped apart the bread for the dressing, and then completely unrelated to the dull knives, burnt the living day-lights out of the dressing! Apparently the bottom of the oven is a lot hotter than the rest of the oven and so after three minutes of being in the oven, it had burnt to a crisp. On the bright side, the chickens turned out brilliantly (the two chickens I got as both were small). I am happy to say that the electricity stayed on (which was quite a concern) and didnt quit on me until about 15 minutes after everyone had left. Water was running this day, which was terrific for all the water I had to pre-boil to clean and cook everything. What a humbling experience and reminder of all the conveniences we take for granted back home. Never really knew what I was getting myself into when I decided to cook Thanksgiving dinner, however I am pleased to say, with the exception of the dressing, it was a complete success! The Wedding My roommate was invited to a traditional Rwandese Wedding that was about two hours away by bus and I had the privilege of going along with her. The first thing that I learned was that it is ok to show up two hours late to your own brothers wedding. African time is a time of its own. Continued on Page 22

Trip of a lifetime
Continued from Page 22 I am not saying this to be rude or prejudice. The fact is, is that some cultures place more value on being on time and time management than others and Africa is one of those others. Now, this is a generalized statement so it does not necessarily apply to everyone here but it is something that you have to adapt to (especially if you are like me and like things organized, well-planned and detailed). Somehow, not even knowing the person who was getting married, I still ended up actually in the wedding party, which was quite an experience. Having a white person at your wedding elevates your status here and so little did I know that going to someone elses wedding would mean I would probably be getting my picture taken more than the bride and groom. The weddings here last most of the day and sometimes more than one day, with lots of speeches (hours and hours and hours of them), songs, and lots of food. The dresses and traditional costumes are beautiful and my roommate and I actually wore some of their traditional clothing to be a part of the ceremony. Another great experience! The Cows Driving on a moto-taxis (dirt bike) home from work around 7 p.m. the other night and my moto went around a sharp corner on the dirt road and almost hit a cow. When I say we almost hit a cow, I mean, another millimeter and I would have been mixed in with some instant ground beef! As we swerved to miss the cow, people jumped out of the way and in the process of regaining our balance a mamma and her baby cow found themselves the next target of our moto, and so the whole swerving process began again. I am happy to report that we did not create a meat market on the road, and myself, my driver and the moto are still all in one piece(as well as the various people who jumped out of our way) The Gorillas Im not even sure where to begin with this experience. Parc National des Volcans is an area in Musanze about a two hour bus ride from where I currently live. I have been up this way twice now and it is probably the most beautiful part of Rwanda that I have seen thus far. The first time I went up I hiked the Dian Fossey Trail and could not get enough of the beauty that surrounded me. The second time I went up I went to see the Mountain Gorillas and Silverbacks. This was an experience I will never forget. Trackers began to track the gorilla family we were going to see starting around 7 a.m. and they talked to our guide by radio to tell us where to go while porters used machetes to cut their way through the dense rainforest so we could get to where the gorillas were. This process goes on for hours while we traipsed through the mud, thistles, piles of red ants (which gave me a whole new understanding and meaning to the term ants in your pants and beautiful country side until we finally got to where the gorillas were. After a run-through of procedures, safety rules and expectations we descended into the midst of a family of about 18 gorillas. In the family we went to see there were five Silverbacks, one three-week-old baby, two three-month-olds and then the rest of the family varied in age and gender. One of the rules is that you are not allowed within seven meters of any of the gorillas, however, even though we may have followed the rules, the gorillas do not. Being in the midst of a family of about 18 gorillas does not always allow you to be aware of where all of them are at once, and at one point we were right in the middle of all of them. Although these astounding creatures are somewhat accustomed to the proximity of humans and in some cases are quite curious and will come right up to you, we are reminded that just like any other animals, they are wild. Sometimes they would walk by us, talk to us and growl at us, but with each behavior exhibited, our guides and the trackers were able to tell us what to do or where to go in order to respect the gorillas and their families. At one point, I was getting a picture with a gorilla sitting in the background when he/ she decided they wanted to get closer to me to have a look and so gradually they leaned closer and closer to me and moved the tree branches out of the way to get a better look.

Sarah Watson is a teacher with Sacred Heart Academy. She left for Rwanda this past summer to volunteer her time with a school there, and will return home in December.

Needless to say, I moved pretty quickly to put some space between us, although our guide just laughed and said that the gorilla was taken with me. Our time was limited to one hour amongst the magnificent creatures and I could have stayed there for hours taking pictures and just watching them. Amongst the lush green rainforest, I sat with the gorillas. Honestly incredible. Well worth the thistles, muddy pants, wet shoes from the puddles, and hours of hiking for just an hour with the gorillas. One of my most memorable hours in Africa yet!

A true Strathmore ghost story where will the trainman go?

Jack Bomford A personal experience There was, a beautiful farmstead in the northwest corner of Strathmore across the canal from Hillview, on the south side of the Oxbow road. It is there in that historic place that these events occurred. In June of 1998, our daughter and her family had the good fortune to purchase and move to this stately, memorable acreage with their two little boys (and a baby daughter to follow a year later). A place I found that was full of history, nostalgia, and great beauty. The elegance of long lanes, majestic poplars, maples and eighty year-old crabapple trees enclosing lush lawns and shrubbeds, interspersed with ancient outbuildings, totally captivated the mind and imagination of all who visited It was a place of great mystery also, as we were to find out. The years that followed were wonderful times. It was an awesome home for a young family especially for children. It was an atmosphere that, strangely, seemed to beg for children and totally compliment their lives. Those indeed were wonderful years! That feeling never changed even when years later strange events began to happen. It began, as I remember, with eerie shuffling in the hallways at night, at first shrugged off as a creaky old house. But they persisted, and sometimes the little boys would swear that someone came into their room at night, resulting in their sleeping with covers over their heads. Still everyone clung to the idea that maybe its just their imagination and a very happy existence continued. Still, however, strange happenings increased, a music box in a china cabinet started by itself, and then in the fall and winter something would knock inside the south wall of the kitchen persistently, until our grandson would kick the wall playfully, shouting shut up much to our amusement. We believed, at first, that it must be a mouse, but later conceded that it would have to be a very large mouse, impossible! Well, we thought, perhaps it was a furnace duct only to discover that there was none in the area. Having learned some of the history of the house and its additions I had once offhandedly suggested, Seems like there could have been a door there one time. The happy years went by, no one was unduly alarmed by these occurrences, and I think everyone thought that if there was indeed a ghost it was a friendly spirit. The only somewhat frightening event was the discovery of our grandsons favourite hockey jersey with the back shredded to pieces as with some sharp object. By this time our granddaughter was becoming very mobile and would play by the hour with her toys, employing her vivid imagination. Her mother at first was amused that she would often say Im just talking to my friend or Ill be there in a minute, Im just with my friend. After many such situations, perhaps too many her mother thought, she queried, so who is your friend, Becky? Oh hes a trainman, she answered without hesitation. And we accepted, of course, her explanation always wondering what the connection might be to all of the other strange happenings. It was some years later, 2006 I believe, that the family would sell that wondrous place, to move to acreage north of Strathmore. During the preparation for that move, Becky was heard to say my friend is sure not happy that Im moving Thinking that she was referring to school chums her mother was quick to reassure her that her school would be the same, her friends would still be there. No, I mean the trainman, she replied. All of these events, plus an underlying interest in the history of the old place, led me to question the origin of the buildings, the previous owners, and their related stories. That led me to some remarkable conversations with Jack Coldwell, who had lived across the road since childhood, and had an amazing store of knowledge about early Strathmore, its history, and in particular, that of the neighbouring farmstead. He was an amazing man who had incredible, detailed memories of his childhood and the early days of Strathmore leaving me spellbound with his stories. Homer Nelson, he said, was the first owner of the property probably in the late 1920s, a hardworking man who had a small dairy operation. In his dealings with the CPR, who at that time also operated the irrigation system in the area. He was able to acquire a small building, which he would move to the site, on skids, powered by a four-horse team. This building would be remodeled to be the residence that we knew in these later years. Mr. Coldwell recalled vividly when, as a 10-year old, walking home from school, he saw the building team, caught on the rail track, which used to run approximately where the canal is now. A train was approaching, causing considerable alarm with the moving crew, who enlisted Jacks help to hold the horses as they attempted to dislodge the structure from the rails. The train, fortunately travelling at a slow speed, was able to stop while the dislodging process was completed. But, he added, did that conductor [trainman] ever give them a tongue-lashing for causing such a dangerous situation. With that revelation, my imagination went wild, thinking of the possible connection to the spirit that was encountered many years later. The story faded somewhat with time, with the abandonment of the old place, and the change of residence of the family affected. However, in September of 2012, the old buildings were to be razed to make way for new development. A family friend happened to notice the occurrence, and stopped in to witness the goings-on. Since the wood available was to be recycled, the stucco exterior was stripped before demolition. In paraphrase, he said, youll never believe this, but in the middle of that south wall, under the stucco, was another exterior door, completely wired in, and covered over, abandoned. WOW!!! Exactly where the strange knockings had occurred in the previous years. Hmmm, amazing! And I wondered, where will the trainman go now?

Warriors big league experience

Mario Prusina Times Editor The Wheatland Warriors had the experience of a lifetime when they hosted the Airdrie Lightning on Nov. 2 at the Strathmore Family Centre. By winning a bid during a radio fundraiser, the local double-A bantam team had the game recorded by Calgary Flames video personnel, playby-play for the DVD was provided by Hallof-Fame broadcaster Peter Maher, and even Harvey the Hound made a visit to Strathmore for the game. The special evening was capped off in perfect style, with the 2-1 win over the Lightning, extending the Warriors undefeated streak to nine games. I think it was a good experience for them to hear from (former NHL player and Stanley Cup winner) Colin Patterson really pumped them up, said Warriors head coach Paden Grant. It was a great experience for them and Im glad we got to do it. Getting the W makes it all that much better. All that stuff before the (game) was great and stuff, but more importantly, this was a big, big game in our division. Airdrie is a top team and if we want to be a top team, we have to win games like this. It was good to see the effort out of the kids. Despite falling 1-0 early in the game, the Warriors tied the game when Kody Hammond converted a feed from Chris Rebeyka and Regan Kinley. With just 1:22 left in the period, Kinley scored a beautiful, hardworking shorthanded goal, which was the game winner. The Warriors tightened up their defensive game, especially in the third period, to preserve the win. That third period was huge, said Grant. We had a little bit of a slow start off right off the bat I think the kids were nervous and maybe a little distracted. But in the third period they came out with an effort and we controlled the play in the third period. Airdrie couldnt get anything generated, we established a forecheck, everybody was working hard, our feet were moving. Thats how were effective, thats our game. The Warriors extended their undefeated streak to 10 games the following day, when they earned a 1-1 draw with the Okotoks Oilers in Hussar. After two scoreless periods, the Oilers opened the scoring with

a shorthanded goal with 12:17 left in the game. However, just 1:03 later, Rob Finkbeiner scored a power play goal to even the game, when he converted a feed from Andrew Bretin. The Warriors will now travel to Taber to take on the Golden Suns on Nov. 9, before returning home to host the Lacombe Rockets the following day in Hussar at 3 p.m. Braves finally fall After starting the season with a nine game winning streak, the Wheatland Braves finally lost a game. The local double-A peewee team fell 4-3 to the Bow Valley Braves on Nov. 3, after allowing the game winner with just 10 seconds left in the game. Wheatland then responded with an 8-2 pounding of Lacombe the following day at the Strathmore Family Centre. Next up for the Braves is a home date with the Cranbrook Ice Nov. 9 (7:30 p.m.) in Hussar. Chiefs falter The Wheatland Chiefs fell to 5-6-1 after a pair of losses this past weekend. The local doubleA midget team fell 2-0 on the road to the Badlands Longhorns on Nov. 3, before losing 5-4 the following day to Airdrie at the Strathmore Family Centre. The Chiefs will now host the CRAA Blue on Nov. 9 (7:30 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre (blue ice).

Kings back on track

Mario Prusina Times Editor Entering the weekend with one victory in their last four contests, the Wheatland Kings got back to their winning ways to start the month of November. The local Junior B team defeated the Mountainview Colts 9-4 on Nov. 3 at the Strathmore Family Centre, before posting a 7-4 win over the Banff Bears the following day on the road. After scoring first, the Kings allowed three first period goals, before tying the game with a pair of second period tallies. However, in the third, the explosive Kings scored six goals after the Colts were more interested in the extra curricular activities, rather than playing hockey. Pretty much as long as weve been in the league, they cant play hockey, so they wanna rough it up, said Kings head coach Doug Murphy of the Colts. I dont think weve ever gone that route (in the past), weve tried to stick to playing hockey (when we were not as talented). Sometimes weve taken it on the chin, but (we never played like goons). We needed this win to get turned around, get away from the one goal losses and get back on track like weve said, we have the firepower this year to get some results. Rylan Muenchrath scored twice and added an assist, Ross Fox scored twice and Andrew Bergmann and Evan Elaschuk each scored a goal and two assists to lead the way for the Kings. Aaron Durant and Chris Reed each added a goal and an assist, while Parker Georgsen added a goal and Sam Lonnberg collect three assists. Its unreal we have four good lines, even our defence can contribute, said Bergmann, who was named the Strathmore Times Player of the Game and the HJHL Player of the Month. Its really good to have. Our offence is definitely our strong point if we get the puck out of our zone, its hard to stop us. The Kings then continued their solid weekend with a 7-4 win over the lowly Banff Bears on Sunday afternoon. According to Murphy, when the team rolls out four lines, they are much more effective as a team. We just run in waves each line is a little different, it has a different (identity), said Murphy. We have one line that is just stupid speed, then we have Fox, Bergmann and Lonny, they do their thing. Then we have Muench and his line and theyre as good as most in the league any given night. The Kings will now prepare to host the Cochrane Generals on Nov. 9 (8 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre, before traveling to Three Hills the following day (8 p.m.).

Strathmore High School (SHS) played host to a tournament Nov. 2 and 3. There were 23 teams who competed in the tournament, which was held at SHS, Crowther Memorial Junior High and Wheatland Elementary school. Both boys and girls teams from SHS and Holy Cross Collegiate played, each facing tough opponents throughout the weekend.

Spartans annual volleyball tournament

Mariah Wilson Times Jr Reporter The Strathmore High School senior girls and boys volleyball teams hosted their annual tournament Nov. 2-3. The weekend was filled with many exciting rallies, nail-biter games, and lots of hardearned wins. Both teams intensity grew this weekend, as well as the bond between the players. The Senior Girls started off strong in the tournament and kept the intensity throughout. They won all five games, as well as quarter and semi-finals, which was a first this year. They were patient and confident in their plays, said Coach Randy Moncks. At finals they played against their long time competitors, Brooks. The girls played an aggressive three sets and were able to pull through, winning the tournament. Reflecting on this tournament, Moncks said, our upcoming playoff games and Zone Championships look very promising with the strong team we have this year. The boys had a very success-

ful tournament, coming second in their pool and making it to the Quarter Finals. Over the course of the tournament, the Senior Boys played their rival opponents Senator Gershaw. The boys lost both sets, but were able to come back from 10 points and end the set with a score of 23-25. Coach Brandie Dundas was very impressed with how far the boys have improved since the beginning of the year and believes that they have a strong chance in the upcoming playoffs. League finals continue through this week.

Strathmore Tri-athlete to compete in London

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter For Strathmore resident and junior high teacher Kevin Mertz, competing in triathlons has become a passion. He participated in his first 11 years ago, and he had to take a bit of a hiatus when he and his wife started their family. Now they have three young children and it is only in the past couple of years that he has begun to compete and learn more about being a tri-athlete. This past summer Mertz competed in a triathlon in Banff, walking away with first place for his age group. Because of that victory Mertz has been invited to represent Canada at the 2013 ITU World Sprint Triathlon Championships in London, England. I am totally into it for the experience, I have no podium aspirations or anything like that because its so new I just want to go for the experience, and represent my country on the world stage, said Mertz about the opportunity. In 2011 Mertz began a competitive season in triathlon, more to get a feel of it than anything else. It was in the 2012 season that everything began to come together. I grew up swimming which is usually where people really struggle with triathlon or scares them off. Ive always ran and have done marathons and that kind of stuff, and then got into this triathlon thing and went and bought a rode bike. Its just the coolest thing, so I love that part of it too for sure, said Mertz. Over the past few years Mertz has competed in seven or eight different triathlons, and said he would happily do more if he could afford to and didnt have small children at home. He trains every day. He runs only on some days, and others he combines his bike and swim workouts. He gets up at five every morning to train, or does some of his training after his kids are in bed which can be hard to do on his own. He would like to see a group or club created for people training, saying the extra support and motivation would be beneficial. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings he also swims with the Masters Swim Club at the aquatic centre. Its awesome to train with a group and so motivating. If there was other people interested in starting a triathlon club I would love to be a part of that, said Mertz. On swim-bike days he trains for four hours; short runs are about an hour and half but a long bike - long run can be three to four hours.

My wife, Jennifer, is an incredible cook so she keeps me very healthy nutrition-wise. Ive got to make sure I get lots of sleep, everybody teases me about how much water I drink, hydration is huge and then making sure I give time every week to stretching and strength training, said Mertz. Tackling a triathlon can seem like a daunting challenge. Mertz advises people to just start, just get out there and try it, thats the most important thing is just get out there and try it. He said just try the Tri-Smore held annually in June, its short and easy and he encourages people to get out and try it and see if they like it. One challenge Mertz is facing, besides staying injury free, is he has to begin fundraising and finding sponsorship from people and businesses who are interested in sponsoring him for an individual race in London, and to help get him there. Theres spots on my uniform that I can put sponsors logos on it, said Mertz. Anyone interested in possibly sponsoring Mertz can contact him at kevinmertz@gmail.com.

Bisons sweep weekend games

Mario Prusina Times Editor For the first time this season, the UFA Bisons successfully swept a pair of weekend games. The local triple-A midget team defeated the Southeast Tigers 7-3 on Nov. 3, before posting a 6-3 win over the Calgary Royals the following day. It is definitely satisfying, the guys are pretty excited they had a lot of positive energy on the bench, said a relieved Bisons head coach, Jeremy Friesen. We prepared all week for it weve been through a lot as a team, we talked about that, and we knew going forward wed have to take less short cuts within our structure. We really had to bear down and execute, limit the amount of turnovers weve had and really clean up our first periods. I think we did that (this weekend). After losing to both opponents on the road earlier this season, the Bisons evened the season series with a pair of wins at the Strathmore Family Centre. The Bisons opened the weekend by scoring early and taking a 4-1 lead against the Southeast Tigers, whose only win of the season came at the expense of the Bisons. Their only win of the season was against us, so thats something that (didnt sit well with us), said Friesen. We had a great start, we scored the first shift, 10 seconds in and then we got rewarded a couple of shifts later, both of those were the result of a strong forecheck. After we went up 4-1, we kept it really simple. Meanwhile, the following day against the Royals, it was a bit of a role reversal. Instead of taking a lead, the Bisons fell behind 3-1 midway through the second period. A goal with 3:39 left in the middle frame gave the Bisons a spark. After killing a penalty early in the third period, the Bisons scored four unanswered goals, including two power play markers to earn a 6-3 win. That third period was huge for us, said Friesen after the win. I thought

AMHL hosts Showcase Weekend

Mario Prusina Times Editor Every single Alberta Midget Hockey League team will convene in Strathmore for the first-ever AMHL Showcase Weekend Nov. 10-11 at the Strathmore Family Centre. The midget triple-A hockey league, in which the local UFA Bisons participate, will ditch the annual allstar game in favour of the showcase weekend. In the long run, we felt as a league, that the all-star game wasnt accomplishing what we wanted it to, said Bisons Manager Wayne Hansen. Its not truly an all-star game because we dont have the Top 40 players in our league there. It takes valuable scheduling time away from our league, in an already short season for us. So instead, the league will bring all 18 teams to Strathmore this coming weekend and each team will play two regular season games as part of their 2012-2013 schedule. There will be nine games played each day, beginning at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday and 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, at the Strathmore Family Centre. Both ice surfaces at the arena will be used to showcase every team in the league. This is a way to showcase our league - which we consider to be the premier triple-A midget hockey league in Canada to our fans and also to the scouts, said Hansen. It gives our kids a chance to show their (talents) whether theyve been drafted or whether theyre on someones list (to be drafted) to show what they have. Its not very often that kids at this age can get that many (scouts) all in one place. The Macs Tournament is a classic example of something like that, but for our league alone, this is big for us. According to Hansen, the conversation to have a showcase weekend began a few years ago between the league and former Bisons Manager Neil Glionna, who retired at the end of the 2012 campaign. Finally this past season, the conversations grew stronger and Glionna secured ice in Strathmore. The board of governors voted in favour of the Showcase Weekend earlier this year. Everyone loved the idea, so it is a go, said Hansen. It will be in the south this year and up north next year well kind of move it northsouth to those teams that want to host it. Some teams may not want to because it is a lot of work. He added that the event would require numerous volunteers leading up to the weekend. Hockey aside, Hansen is thrilled to have the first-ever Weekend Showcase here in Strathmore for the economic benefit it brings to town. Its another big event for the town, he said. We suspect that 12 of the 18 teams will need hotel rooms here for the Saturday night. Then you need to feed all those hungry boys (for both days) and they can put away a lot of groceries. Revenue-wise, it will bring a lot of money to town. The hometown Bisons will host the St. Albert Elite Sports Raiders at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday night, before hosting the Leduc Oil Kings at 7:15 p.m. on Sunday night.

The UFA Bisons swept a pair of weekend home games versus South Division opponents, including a 6-3 win over the Calgary Royals on Nov. 4.

we dominated the play entirely and when we needed a save, we got a save. We had all four lines going, our forecheck was really successful and we were all over them, which resulted in a couple of power play opportunities for us. Our power play, weve had a lot of puck possession (during the course of the season), but today it was nice to see us bury a goal or two when we really needed it to make a difference in the game. We talked a lot about how we needed to simplify (our power play) get pucks to the net with bodies there and they did it. Its nice to see them do something weve practiced. The win was a little sweeter for Friesen, as his good friend and former UFA Bisons coach Parry Shockey was on the bench for the Royals, while their head coach Jay Pylypuik is away with Team Alberta for the U16 Challenge Cup (which includes current Bisons Brady Reagan and Mason McCarty). It feels good especially in this rink the role he was playing there was (not really in a coaching capacity) if I was coaching against him, it would have been that much sweeter, laughed Friesen. At the end of the day, he was over there and we kicked his (butt) in our building. So that feels good and hes going to hear about it. The Bisons will now prepare host St. Albert on Nov. 10 (8:45 p.m.) and Leduc the following day (7:15 p.m.) as part of the AMHL Showcase Weekend at the Strathmore Family Centre. All 18 teams in the league will convene in Strathmore and play two regular season games during the weekend.

The Strathmore Vortex U14 ringette team had a successful start to the 2012-2013 season. The Vortex won their last game 6-2 on Nov. 4.

Vortex finish first month strong

Kris Hinz U14 Ringette The Strathmore Vortex U14 team have had a superb first month of play. The team was able to play two exhibition games against a U14 Red Deer team on Oct. 28. They played brilliantly, had fun and were cheered on by many special fans in the stands, but in the end were defeated by their opponent. The Strathmore Vortex U14 team dominated with a win of 6-2 against Airdrie Sting Blue on Nov. 4. They all played an amazing game both offensively and defensively with goals made by Martina Vergouwen, Cassidy Hinz, Tatum Wathen, Kiersten Gron and Ann Sauve with two goals. Those goals were superbly assisted by Laura Taplin, Kiersten Gron, Rachel McCollister (with two), Kaylin Larson and Ann Sauve. Despite the strong physical game, the team played as one, and with Erin Reynolds defending goal and Ann Sauves final goal sniped into their net, the win was inevitable. The team consists of Cassidy Hinz, Ann Sauve, Kaylin Larson, Ashley Lecavalier, Rachel McCollister, Brianna Olson, Erin Reynolds, Martina Vergouwen, Tatum Wathen, Laura Taplin, Kayley Bingham, Holland Kelly, and Kiersten Gron and are coached by an experienced team of Stephan Lecavalier, Jan Wathen, and Leanne Sauve.

Thank You!
Thank You to all who attended our 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration in Nightingale on October 21, 2012. The basket of beautiful cards and best wishes will be scrap book number three. A loving thank-you to our children and grandchildren who put together a memorabilia of memories with great food, decorations, and us as entertainment. Wow! Thank You Deputy Reeve Ben Armstrong and Wheatland County Councillors of Past and Present for the words of wisdom and the beautiful anniversary plaque. How wonderful it is when you can start a journey of 50 years with a wedding dance in the old nightingale hall and come together againsame place, different hall, changes of people over time-but still enjoy and share the love of neighbours, friends and a much larger family. That is the true gift and makes our neighbourhood a beautiful place to live. With Gratitude, Alfred and Shirley Reinhardt

Carole Rose (nee Dyck)

Carole was born on September 24, 1938. She passed away after a short battle with cancer on November 5, 2012 with her family by her side. Having struggled with cerebral palsy, she began her successful career as a psychiatric nurse in 1959. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, and volunteered within the community of Red Deer. She stayed positive during her struggle with cancer and never let it get her down. Carole was predeceased by her daughter Charlotte (who lost her battle with leukemia at the age of 3); parents Isaac and Helena Dyck; and brothers Delmar and Harley. She is survived by her brother Jim (Yvonne); sisters Maria (Jack), Florence (George), and Dianna (Dave); daughters Michelle (Gary), Anita (Lorne), Angela, and Shirley (Scott); and eight grandchildren Vanessa, Nicholas, Nadia, Jessica, Caitlin, Riley, Kelsea, and Keira. Carole was a great mom, a wonderful grandma and a dear friend. She was loved dearly and will be missed by all those whose lives she touched. Caroles family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Hoepfner and the staff at Red Deer Regional Hospital, and to Dr. Fanning and staff at Strathmore Hospital. In lieu of flowers, Carole has requested that donations be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (1331 29th Street N.W., Calgary, T2N 4N2). A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 102 Strathford Bay (Strathmore) at 1:00 p.m. To send condolences, please visit www. wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.

Everyone Welcome!

Thank yous
There truly are angels among us and I know there are an extraordinary number in the Hussar area. It is impossible to express our gratitude to each of you who packed, moved, cooked, cleaned and supported us in the daunting task of moving; a huge feat on its own without facing a health issue and hospital stay to boot. Thank you to the Stitch and Chat ladies for the beautiful healing afghan, it makes for a great nap. You are forever friends and we havent really left the community, we have just moved further down the road. Here like there, the coffee pot is always on.

Sacred Heart School Council and its Fundraising Committee would like to send a sincere THANK YOU to all of the students and parents who participated and worked so hard during the 2012 annual Spell A Thon fundraiser. We would also like to thank these local businesses who support our school fundraiser which made our awards assembly a huge success, enabling the recognition of so many of our students for their fundraising efforts.
