Date:
Purpose:

The main objective of this lab was to understand and determine the operation and terminals of

motor as shunt-wound motor, its activation and understandings of starting mechanism, operating it with

servo-machine braking system and finally measuring the armature voltage and current when the motor is

running under load.

Experimental set up

First of all the “ActiveServo” software was started which automatically started the servo-machine

test system into PC mode. After that the motor is wired according to the circuit diagram given below as a

dc shunt wound motor and the servo-machine test system into PC mode. The “Torque Control” mode was

used in order to note and record the load characteristics. After that the DC supply was on and the output

current was set to 2.5 A. The output was enabled from the button and the output voltage was slowly

increased to 220 V. With the help of servo-machine test system, braking was applied to the motor and the

torque value was set to 0.95 Nm. By varying the excitation voltage, the relevant speed and current

characteristics were noted and recorded.

Similarly the same procedure was repeated for determining the torque-current load characteristics

for a voltage of 220 V, 190 V and 160 V.

Circuit Diagram:

The connection diagram for the experimental set up is given below.

Results:

First of all the torque and current characteristics were noted and recorded in the table given below

for different values.

The same results are also given in the plot given below
After that the torque and current characteristics for voltages value of 220 V, 190 V and 160 V

were determine and plotted as shown below.

Analysis and Discussions:

The purpose of this lab experiment was to study the connections and operation of a dc

shunt motor and determine its torque and current characteristics. During the experiment it was found that

the motor responds very roughly when it was running at the nominal current value.

Further it was noted that as the armature current was increased, the corresponding motor torque

increased in same linear proportion. When the torque of the motor was in the vicinity of the nominal

torque, its speed remained almost the same. As the torque was increased from its nominal value, the speed

started increasing as well.

Similarly it was also noted that when the motor was running under a specific load, it behaved

differently under different voltages. When the voltage got lower, the speed of the motor also became less.

But under this condition of low voltages under load, the motor output current increased in large

proportion as compared to the voltages.

Conclusions:

The experiment was performed successfully and all the results obtained were also according to

the requirements of the lab. The following points were noted:

 The torque increases linearly with increasing the armature current

 The speed remains almost same under nominal torque value

 After nominal torque, the speed increases as the torque increases

 The speed of motor decreases as the voltage is decreased

 The current increases more under low voltages when motor is running under load
