EXPERIMENT NO. 3
NAME OF THE EXPERIMENT : SPEED CONTROL OF DC SHUNT MOTOR
AND OBSERVATION OF THE EXISTENCE
OF BACK EMF

OBJECTIVE:
Speed of a dc motor may be given by the following equation: -
N = K (V-I a R a )/ 

Where,
V = applied terminal voltage
I a = armature current
R a = armature resistance
 = Field flux
K = a constant
Therefore, speed of a dc shunt motor can be varied by the following methods:-

Flux control method:

By decreasing the field flux of a dc motor, by inserting a resistance in the field circuit,
speed can be increased above the base speed.

Armature rheostat method:

In this method armature current is varied by inserting a rheostat in the armature circuit
and speed can be decreased below base speed.

Voltage control method:

By applying a variable dc voltage V across the motor terminals, speed can be varied.

In this experiment all this methods of speed control will be accomplished. In excess, the
existence of back emf will also be observed.

APPARATUS:
Two dc ammeters, two rheostats, one dc voltmeter, dc motor

1
EXPERIMENTAL SET-UP:

Power
Supply
Variac
M

PROCEDURE:

1) Complete the connection as shown in the figure. Apply 200v dc across the terminals.
Keep the field rheostat at minimum resistance position. Start the motor. Observe the
high deflection of the armature circuit ammeter.
2) Proof of the existence of back emf: When the motor is running, the lamp will glow
steadily. Now open the switch S. Had there be no back emf, the light would
instantaneously turn off. However, due to presence of back emf, the light will gradually
fade out as the motor coasts down.
3) Field control method: Apply 200v dc across the motor terminals. Keep the armature
rheostat and field rheostat to the minimum positions. Start the motor. Vary the field
rheostat in step and measure I f and N. Take sets of reading at suitable stepping.
4) Armature rheostat method: Keeping the supply voltage V and field rheostat fixed vary
the armature rheostat in steps. Take readings of I a and N. Take sets of readings at
suitable stepping.
5) Voltage control method: Keep both the rheostats fixed. Apply variable dc voltage across
the terminals of the motor and take readings of V and N. Take sets of readings at
suitable stepping
REPORT:

1) Plot N vs. I f , I a and V curves on the same graph paper.

2) Comment on the merits and demerits of various methods of speed control of dc shunt
motor.
6) Why is a starter required to start a dc shunt motor?
7) Discuss the consequence of an open circuit fault occurring in the field circuit when
motor is running at rated speed and rated voltage.
