Kids champion Toys for Tots

Dec. 25, the schools seventh and eighth graders banded together and collected more than 200 toys to donate to Washtenaw Countys Toys for Tots program. It makes me feel good that these kids are getting all these toys for Christmas, said eighth-grader Ryan Flattery as he helped load the toys into a minivan for the organization. (Toys

Wylie student raises $1,000 for Red Cross storm relief

The efforts of thirdgrade student at Dexters Wylie Elementary School has led to over a $1,000 donation to the Washtenaw County Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. Haila Moazami came up with the idea on her own. Her teacher, Kate Boynton said Haila is always coming up with creative ideas. She frequently tells me about new inventions she would like to make, Boynton said. One day she came to me and said she had a new idea; she wanted to raise money for the victims of the hurricane. Boynton thought her idea had merit he told her to write a proposal for what she would like to do because it would need to be approved by Mary Cooper, our principal. She said Haila presented the proposal to Cooper and got the approval she needed for a hat fundraiser. Mrs. Cooper and I were both so impressed that a third grader would come up with such a selfless plan all on her own and take the initiative to make it happen, Boynton said. Called Hats for the Hurricane, Hailas fundraisers was held Nov. 16. Students could wear a hat to school and were asked to donate spare change for the Red Cross. Over half of the students of Wylie participated. With Hailas leadership, the school raised over $1,000 to donate to the Red Cross, Boynton said. We are so proud of Haila and all our students at Wylie who reached out to help others in need.
