Timmins Branding Strategy

Introduction*to*the*web*survey*

The City of Timmins with the assistance of the St. Clements Group Inc. is developing a branding strategy for the community. This project was one of several strategic initiatives that comes out of the overall community strategy, Timmins 2020. The branding project aims to find unique and compelling stories to tell the world about the specialness of Timmins. When all-is-said-and-done, over 400 people from around the community and outside it will be involved in the discussions. Some of the ways people have contributed are through personal interviews, special events, workshops with key groups and industry sectors, Facebook and Twitter discussions, and an on-line community-wide survey.

Survey Monkey, a widely used instrument for social and communitybased research. The survey was widely promoted through advertisements, word of mouth and the various social media vehicles employed over the course of the project. The questionnaire asked respondents about what they liked best and least about the city, and their reactions to current images associated with Timmins. This survey report contains all questions and responses, quantitative and qualitative (i.e. comment-based) in nature.

Page 6, Q13. What are three things about the City that you would wish to change if you could?

First thing I would change: 1 2 Diversify economy Reliance on natural resources for our jobs, we need to keep diversifying into more service industries to keep more jobs here. This would attract new residents and keep some of our youth from migrating west and south. Bring more interesting things here for kids and teens Poor infrastructure Clean up the garbage road conditions are very poor Open a Starbucks the "look" of the city (i.e. dirty) clean the city - need a positive mindset at city hall - if we want to attract proffesionals and be a vibrant growing community - we need to present ourselves well - case in point - how can a building (new actlab) on Algonquin blvd be approved like that - poor thinking on our planning front - the feldman development has never finished landscaping - one of the access points into our city and it looks like crap - the city should be on that developer to finish and make sure it is upkept housing too expensive Both entrances to the city are pathetic looking. the trafic lights (add where needed, fix scheduling at others) Its business plan not enough activities Council needs to take more risks The highway out of the city, (dangerous) Perception that it is a small town, not a city of 45k Having more trails to connect to one another better streets system of traffic lights and adding more center turning lanes Better control of the native population Complacency Nov 5, 2012 3:44 PM Oct 17, 2012 8:20 AM

The climbing cost of living Bike lanes, since I have biked around town almost everyday to work and I have had cars stop a few feet away from me(almost running me over), some cut me off, and others almost clipping me. have a department store downtown New sports facility (Arena) Change out the old stubborn councillors that are burying this town and compromising the future. Customer service The aspect of the city (old buildings, no real downtown, no sidewalks in certains parts of town...) the pot holes City Hall often lacks courage for tough decisions that will be good in the long run

More variety of Retail stores Customer Service is terrible in most establishments Create secondary industry more fine dining restaurants housing, it is impossible to find a place and they are gone crazy with prices better roads taxes downtown is a bit run down peoples attitudes towards differences If I could wave a magic wand, I would fill city council with younger members. at least half the council should be less than 40 years old. I find we are still behind the times compared to other communities. Pave all walking & biking trails the sports venues (arenas, parks) More ethnic Diversity in food/ restaurants eliminate barriers that prevent people with disabilities from participating in society that everyone else takes for granted. More positiveness form locals who live here now Help build a softball complex ensure political will to change Better City Roads repair Local university degree programs - use existing colleges in partnership with universities to deliver degree programs terrible roads/curbs/sidewalks More community appreciation of the arts rather than sports better public transportation to south add more restaurants The sense of community. Too many disparaging voices. Major improvements/upgrades to all the highways coming into Timmins

Force the prices down for property Ability to build more mult-residential. There are NO R3 lots with the proper dimensions to build even a triplex. More affordable rental living for young professionals and others just starting out City Council have equal representation of population demographics so all voices can be heard. make more housing available. as there is a serious lack right now. Get rid of the Shania Twain centre Having sections of roads repaved instead of having cracks in the pavement filled in. The following year it needs to be repaved. have more tourist attractions One main calendar of events - everyone inputs on the one calendar Better arenas and recreation facilities invest in new buildings (like sportsplex) The lack of fun activities especially in the winter (a fun pool with a kid area, a new theatre, ...) sport facilities It's a pretty unattractive town with very little public art or efforts to make it look welcoming

After travelling with my family and comparing what we have with other cities on par with us, Timmins falls short. improve soft services More events in Timmins such as concerts etc... Introduce a "inventors club" with mentors updating the washrooms at parks give residents opportunities to exercise during colder months build a by pass through the city condition of the streets summer and winter Bring in junior or minor pro hockey team - boost pride in community Having a couple more street lights on some streets. Too many myths that justify our horrible attitude towards the arts.. Ex.. People of timmins don't come out to concerts... The reason for that is Concerts that are done are not professional and far too ambitious Downtown: no longer an enjoyable place to be; seems filled with dangerous people and doesn't feel safe at any time of day Improve emergency services in the east end More activities for kids Open an English university Add accessible biking and walking trails. I know about Hershey and the trail behind the Hospital (which are great) but having to take my vehicle to go biking is very annoying. Widening the side of the road for bikers would be nice as well. More opportunities for kids to participate in the arts. the lack of customer services in most businesses, some store employees do not even acknowledge your presence in their stores Better concerts. revitalize Hollinger Park - it is the first thing visitors see and it does not give a good impression - the park, flowers, trees are not kept up Timmins Mayor

More Housing Affordable decent housing is lacking High taxes graffitti there is NOTHING for kids to do..it would be great to have like a hole block with a big ymca, ywma, someplace with a building, and outdoor place were kids can go single calendar of events mill rate cleaner streets I would love to see tourism improved. Seriously, what does Timmins have to offer as a legitimate attraction like Science North, or Dynamic Earth in Sudbury, or a casino and the agowa canyon train tours in the Soo. We need to get rid of old failing infrastructure like our arenas and have something new and cutting edge like a multiplex idea that's been floated around for years. Acomodations are better in town now with the construction of a few new hotels with more on the slate to be built. Narrowed minded council people's perception that there is nothing to do More $$ time devoted to accessibility of buildings and businesses, as well as intfrastructure for roads & sidewalks I wish everyone including council and department heads would stop assuming there are no people here with a disability. We are people too and we deserve a safe envirotment to have fun and work in. More hotels - beginning to happen Get the city to help the dog park, lights and fresh water ensure follow-up on on strategic plan Preserving our past heritage ie buildings, landmarks More pride in the mining industry upon which the town was built - it is often as if the city is ashamed of it's past. improve dining/shopping/cultural options Larger stores like Costco and Ikea here to save traveling for shopping at those stores need to attract inductry and people to sustain growth

Urban Sprawl - widen Timmins' horizans! have more gardens and welcoming people into our town. it would look so much more beautiful if we had some more flowers and gardens the entertainment bring in more activities for teenagers as well as families to do Fix the roads...They are worse then my cottage road!! Timmins Square shopping opportunities More stores More retail clothing stores The Timmins Square Add better stores to the Timmins Square The weather traffic flow schools Mall Theriault Certain places where there is a lot of unwanted loitering setting up more events for the city More better paying jobs

more tolerance for diversity and diversification more snow removal People who lived here are very narrow-minded in their thinking much better roads More for youth to do Funding for the current dog park roads need to be repaired get lighting for the dog park Revitalize the "main drag" (Algonquin, Riverside Dr., and Hsy 101) as it gives a grim view of the city City council: A lot of the ideas and projects put forth and a lot of the decisions made by council seem uneducated. Good example: Shania Twain Centre. Council focuses so much on celebrities from Timmins (Shania and Steve Sullivan) but I really don't think it's appropriate for a city to spend so much time, energy, and money on projects, events, and facilities decided to people of a specific career. Development is not American box stores Get rid of rogers There is a lot of support for small businesses lately... But very little in terms of artisans. The business help seems to revolve around retail and services, and artisan manufacturers are left to scrounge for craft shows and such. A permanent artisan square would be a good start to helping that. Feel free to contact me for more info on such a project: amanda.tambeau@gmail.com clean up of downtown, and all buildings, sidewalks etc along algonquin blvd Old, ugly housing night life, get some Access to information on social and cultural services lot of buildings need a facelift Arts and cultural activities, theatre, galleries accessibility of downtown core People are not Friendly or welcoming to new commers more things for adults and children to do free of charge

city council (need new blood) Our leaders would have better control over how City department managers spend money. As a former City employee, I've been privy to wasteful spending. Update city building Start a private school for grade 7 & 8 for hockey players close the Shania Twain Center , use it for something that can bring in revenue such as sports complex attract more young professionals clean up the downtown core elections at large Closed-minded mentality - need to think/dream bigger Have the city take an active role on developing future artists, then allowing these artists to express themselves with city resources, Posters advertising people who originated from our town such as Shanya Twain and Steve Yzerman; its just not classy Treat all areas of the city equal improve city appearance Encourage development of community groups and services to retain young people Reduce racism with the first nations. A lot of aboriginals are leaving the reserves and are moving into bigger cities. If Timmins was smart enough, they would capatalize on this and attract them to the city. They could bring cultural diversity and put a whole new vision of the city. The community pride. the cleanliness of the downtown streets and the old derelict buildings People's closed-minded attitude/horrible customer service 90% of the places. roads better roads Public transportation is not sufficient to the needs of employers or employees. Miss skating rinks with shack for kids to go to in the winter time city hall attitude more support for people in need Why doesn't Timmins have big name concerts like they do in sudbury. People drive all the way from Hearst to go see Bryan Adams, or Nickleback, or Headley play in Sudbury. The last big concert we had was 15 years ago when Shania played in the Hollinger Park. Or there was the Land of Lakes event that had some nice names but even that was ten years ago. Jim Cuddy isn't big enough. Sure he played in Blue Rodeo, but him solo, not as big as if the whole band was going to be here. The local radio stations don't even play anything from his last solo album! Plus they only play 10 year old or older Blue Rodeo songs. We need a fresh perspective in the acts that come to town. If I knew that business a bit I'd love to help out. Better concerts & events venues to bring in more entertainment More job diversity in other industries (manufacturing?) wish council and department heads would grow some balls and realize Old buildings, streets, sidewalks and bridges of the past need to be rebuilt. Roads Fix the pot holes everywhere upgrade or build new rec facilities More emphasize on culture ie arts, "beautify" the city; encourage restoration and redefinition of "old" spaces/buildings Better parking downtown to encourage shopping there. property taxes are high active leadership Sports Entertainment Upgrade the streets signs intersecting Algonquin/Riverside to really big signs like other cities in Ontario. more familly things to do more advertising for upcomming events More activities more health care practitioners

the city - what does this mean environmentally as well as health wise? Again, city council doesn't seem to ask enough questions or think enough before going through with a project. 134 135 136 Foreign ownership of resource companies More alternative lifestyle options Large chain stores. It's been proven that they are horrible for small town economies, and yet Timmins is letting them come in and expand. Walmart, for example, is creating a 'low-income pay, so low income shopping' circle that slowly lowers the average income of any small city. With the new supercenter, even the large chain grocery stores in town are feeling the pain. Michaels already put two craft/arts stores out of business, and Joanne's art store is struggling now. Value Village is draining the donations away from the true 'good samaritan' centers, and selling clothes and other things for far more than a thrift store should. Some large chain stores are necessary for their services/products specialties (such as grocery stores, restaurants etc..), but large chains that are known for economy destruction should be kept away. And when a large chain business is really needed, it should be a Canadian-owned and operated franchise. At least then the money stays in the country if not the province or town. Algonquin Blvd - too narrow, overhead power lines etc entertainment Racism, discrimination, environmental degradation add an arts and culture facility physical upkeep of the city, including the entrance to the city, downtown area and at least along Algonquin Blvd. aesthetics of the downtown more free parking Terrible service in commercial/retail Elected officials always in opposition build more affortable city owend housing lack of participation Town beautification, more flowers, less concrete indoor entertainment such as lazer tag, water park, ect. because Winters are terrible Sep 14, 2012 10:01 AM Sep 14, 2012 9:18 AM Sep 14, 2012 8:50 AM

Page 6, Q14. During the time that you have known Timmins, how has your perception of the city changed? (if at all)

1 2

Need to plan and think bigger ( longuer term) to grow the City more effectively. We have gone from a very isolated community to more of a regional center, and hopefully this will continue to build. When I was a kid, nobody moved to Timmins, now all kinds of people do. Timmins is also less defined by its neighbourhoods - and I don't know if this is good or bad. We no longer have the "Italian" part of town, the "Croatian" part of town, etc., there is more of a mix. At the end of the day, it is still home. An unfriendly community My feelings about Timmins has gone down hill Mining town for sure. Lots of transient people. Rough town for night life. Booze and drugs. My first thoughts of Timmins were terrible roads and terrible drivers. I hated driving here. More through fares needed. Re-route101 out of downtown. I don't hate driving as much as I did, but I likely changed my routes and drive times. Oh. And I hate carrying change for parking meters. We seem to be moving from the boomtown idea to a feeling of permanency. my perception of the city is that we dont have the necessary funds to operate the town properly or acceptable to my liking - due to our location we need to be have that much more to offer and be vibrant - the culture of thinking needs to change at city hall - they need to be more focussed on the strategic priorities - not one off ideas as they come across them - this city has a new strat plan in place what are they doing to reogranize departments to align with the strat plan - the city appears to operate on a daily basis - not on long term planning. Timmins has gone from a very social entertaining town with it's many bars and night life to a very quiet and boring night life. There is no more night life actually unless you go to restaurants or make your own entertainment and hope the cops don't come knocking at your door. Timmins has no activities for it's teens. Plenty for youths and adults to do, but what about our teens? Nothing. Vandalism and experimentation with various drugs and social misbehaviours. it has gone down. with things like the Shania Twain Center yet no place to go and see more about our history, the great hockey players, the prospectors, etc... City has grown in complexity therefore has possibly become harder to manage by its politicians (City council). There is definitely a need to market the City as a place to grow both on a personal and social level as well a on a financial and business level. I have lived in other cities though out the years, and i find Timmins very closed minded. It seems like Timmins is afraid to grow and adapt to new things. We have finally come to terms that we are 1 city nor many small towns It has started to grow into a city and not a small town. There seems to be a lot more opportunity for young people to succeed.

timmins is a great city, has to boast about itself more in the provincial setting. Population make-up has changed considerably in the last few years. It used to be that you could let your kids go out and catch the bus and be with thier friends without worrying. Now there is to much "rif raf" (for lack of a better word) hanging around all over the downtown area. It isn't as clean as it used to be either, the whole city, not just the downtown. Kids need more to do around here instead of hanging around causing trouble and putting grafitti on everything. Also, it is unfortunate that the outlying areas of Timmins are being built up so much. More needs to be done with the city Centre (downtown area). It takes too many buses and to long to get to some places. More central locations would give more people a chance to get out. It is a city of great opportunity but it settles for mediocrity I love the fact that it is growing, this last year seeing the new buildings and job ops are great. I was ready to move back to New Brunswick but the increase in activity in the city and new happenings have played a major roll in my family rethinking about staying here. We need to have a more cohesive group of leaders in the hockey world. 3 associations in a town this size all with their own agendas...they need a true leader to amalgamate them and do what is best for the kids. timmins needs to look in the future instead of sticking in the present. Instead of minor fix ups, fixed thing properly for the long haul. Need to replace Arenas with multi pad Arenas not enough ice for everyone. need to have more activities, concerts etc Yes I believe that the city is mismanaged. Shania Twain center was a mistake, waste of money. Turn it into something more attactive. Not as safe as I thought it was. I have not once seen the smoking by-laws enforced and I think it's terrible. We pay enough in taxes that we should be able to afford a by-law officer to enforce it during events. Better idea of people who are trying to improve the city and those who are afraid of change The city council's boys' club is too conservative. They don't want to invest in the residents' future need for recreation. I didn't like it here at first. I find the people more friendly and helpful. My oppinion changed with the Timmins 9 fire. I see the quality of people that are here The city is getting more services and leisure options for its citizens. I would like to see more in terms of beautification though. I realize the city exists because of mining and forestry and will always have an industrial feel to it, but even residential standards are rediculously low. The citie's north (tree streets) and south have older homes that are just rotting and look terrible. Nobody chooses to live in Schumacher anymore. They go there because they can't afford anywhere

else or can't find an apartment to rent in Timmins. The west end of town is developing nicely, but the new building between Timmins Inns and Home Hardware is a horrible eyesore. Again, I realize that end is historically insdustrial, but the city has grown and that part of town is walking distance to some of the nicest homes in town. That buisiness doesn't need to be on the main artery. 28 29 The city is slowly becoming more cosmopolitan than in the past, but still needs much work on ventures outside the tradition resource-based economy. Nope, it is the same boys club making decisions that only benefit themself. The Shania Twain Centre is a perfect example of a waste of tax dollars. Timmins should invest in eco-tourism and not failed ventures. How come we never got Science North? I've noticed the increase in community events (like the kayak challenge, concerts in the park) and that's helped make this place seem even more like home. The downtown area is not like it used to be. There used to be a lot more stores. I do like the idea of the Urban Park. I just wished the farmer's market that is held on Thursdays would begin sooner in the morning. We have grown by leaps and bounds. When I was a kid there was a field between McDonalds and Hwy 655, now there is KFC and Esso and Burger King building and grocery store etc... When I was a kid we had to go through Schumacher to get to the Mac then across the train tracks. There are many examples that I can give but simple things like the new CDSSAB building, the new motels, the turning lanes on 655 and Theriault Blvd, the library, the cop shop etc... we are progressive and moving forward and ever growing. I was optimistic when I first arrived that Timmins would take full advantage of an extended booming mining cycle, but my views have turned to extreme pessimism since then. It feels like council and the city are resigned to ease the city into some form of retirement while dwelling on history to remember how progressive the city once was. My perception has changed for the better when it comes to services. I realized there were good services to be had, more activities than I thought. However, I have realized that the city could be much better than it is and that the city (by which I mean the politicians running it) could be doing more for Timmins. The city looks pretty bad, there are buildings falling apart, Cochrane has a better pool than we do, they don't want to build sidewalks in areas where there are young families tryiing to walk safely and comfortably, they don't help out people and businesses who try to make the city better, for example preventing people from building nice affordable income properties to answer the growing need for apartments or not cooperating when a nice theatre wants to build in Timmins, etc. Now knowing I much the property taxes are in town (more than in large cities like Ottawa) I truly believe the city could be more than it is with better budgeting and priorities. seems like the city is only looking at today not the future ,whats good today doesn't mean that is good tomorrow Sep 29, 2012 5:09 PM Sep 29, 2012 11:35 AM

Very little, except having become more involved I see there is a core of people that try very hard to make Timmins a better place to live Increasingly, my perception of Timmins is that our leaders are shortsighted and have no vision for what Timmins can offer its residents. We would in the "here and now" by patching holes but never finding a solution to the problem. The new public library was a major fight, but in the end it is very well used by residents and well worth the money. The only reason my husband and I are still here with our children is because we have excellent jobs in our field (teacher and librarian) with decent job security. large sense of apathy. residents and council are slow to change... progress is difficult... not enough planning for the future. Since I have known the city I came to realize that things are done on a reactive basis rather than proactive. If it is not "broken" leave it alone. The parks and buildings have been let go for so long that now to update these public ammenities is going to cost a fortune. Regular maintenance and updates when required would have definitely helped out our situation but here we are instead spending approximately 1 million on the McIntyre Arena for new seating and an elevator, and now approximately 400 thousand at the sportsplex for a new sewage system half a million at the pool to rebuild a wall. What is next?? It seems that these dollars would be much better spent on a new facility. Yes, time for new counsellors with a vision for the younger community. No. It is what you make of it. n/a It is a town that is letting its infrastructure to fall apart. The city is crumbling apart roads, buildings; but also the reason for most young families to stay is also coming apart. Without these families jobs and therefore tax money is lost. Once I am retired my wife and I will move south to be closer to my sons. its gotten cleaner, it really needs a fresh start, for example put more focus on recreation and the arts It's grown in population but the attractions have been growing few and far in between in regards to renos and updates. I have the impression that the city is run by an "old boys" club and a select few entrepreneurs - needs to change. No. When I was younger, I used to come up for curling tournaments at the McIntyre arena from Amos, Qubec. That is what I remember the most from Timmins, but since I moved here in June, my perception is the same: I am happy! I've noticed too many powerful and influential leaders holding onto outdated ideas. Also far to much self interest and no cooperation as the self interested cannot be trusted therefore there is an everyone for themselves attitude. That

attitude often creates jealousies towards others who share the same interest. As a result instead of cooperation and shared goals, there is confrontation, slander, sabotage, back dealing, false claims, and mistrust. That is how we are seen from the rest of Canada. To be honest Timmins is Canada's hillbilly's.. 49 The downtown used to be a reasonable place with great events. The events are still there and alive, however the atmosphere has changed due to the decrease in perseved safety. Also, old boys club really needs to get out. It really hasn't very little expansion and the old boys club at city hall is still running the show. The city became one in 1973 yet services are different in the east end. The city wants or it looks like they want to be the big boy of the north yet nothing new is ever done to get it here I have noticed it is a city with a perception that it is resistant to change because those that are resistant to change speak louder than those who believe change in needed. Still a great place to be but has so much more potential if willing to move forward and modernize. Many local businesses have gone under and the downtown core has been replaced by box stores at the edge of town. Where once someone could walk anywhere they needed to go in the city center, now the layout of development caters only to those with vehicles. it didn't change at all. There should be more room for things to change about the city. I have seen changes being made by City Council in the last few years. For many, many years, the city was stagnant with no growth opportunities at all. Now I feel like City Council is looking to the future and trying to catch up to the rest of the province in a lot of areas. many downtown businesses have closed down, for example there is no hardware store close by the core of the city. population has grown and the city has expanded more post secondary opportunities for the students easy to navigate the city streets Growing up, I didn't mind living in Timmins however, I always felt like it was "away" from all the fun/cool stuff and couldn't wait to get out of here. I left for 11 years and came back to realize little had changed. Timmins is far from all the great cities where there museums actually worth visiting, amazing concerts (music - or not), up-to-date stores & venues. For instance, why can't we get a DQ, a Starbucks, a Costco? The good stores close (ei. West 49)... Why can't we get bands that the youth will actually want to go see? Lead singer from the Barenaked ladies?? Are you kidding me? How can Kirkland Lake get bands who are currently featured on MuchMusic's countdown and we get stuck with crackhead who most youth don't even know? Not every youth is into fishing/hunting/camping... Timmins wants to "keep the youth here" however, there is little that's done to make it happen. I regularly say: Timmins sucks -cause it does. There is little culture, no class. Most front-line staff provide you with poor customer service. BUT, that's to be expected from a city where the youth walk around town in their "jammies" at all times of the day! Sep 26, 2012 5:03 PM

We have not tapped into the resources available to the City to make it a hub of Northern Ontario. We seem to let Sudbury take that moniker and they do not represent us. Timmins is the centre of Northern Ontario not Sudbury. We need to adjust our thinking in placing us at the forefront. Also, resources that are ours like Hollinger Park need to be kept up. For a time in the past, the flowerbeds, trees were beautifully kept and the park was looked after with pride, now the trees are overgrown, the flowerbeds are a mess of weeds and the Shania Garden is disgraceful. We should be proud of our community and if Hollinger Park is a symbol of our pride, I think we are solely lacking. I have become more aware of the violence that is not reported via media. Town council not is not aware of the hardship they have imposed by higher taxes, water bill and of course taking care of themselves first (big raises). Police do not have a good reputation. i find timmins is slighty growing, but we still need new ideas, new attractions, more variety of restaurants/ Stores,, but it is Getting bigger than when i was a child When I first thought of moving to Timmins I thought "small town, friendly people". Not so much. It took a couple of years to find this which I am pleased with now. However we stuck it out, what about those people who did not and just moved on. Timmins has so much potential and we need people to implement new and fresh ideas. Have lived here my entire life. I was afraid of the city, but now I find the people friendly I do not think the city of Timmins does a good job in alot of areas, they protect business more then home owners. I have delt with the bi-law for the past 5 years..they have used so many excuses on why they cant, that now my property is all damaged and they still arent doing anything. NOT a real happy camper. Dont really like that new import immigrants thing and giving them housing and stuff, we need housing desperately as it is. The new "social assistance office/ambulance building" was a real waste of tax payers money. It does not go with the environment, it looks out of place, it should be in the downtown core, close to banks and such. Never see city sidewalk plows anymore..every time you walk uptown, its crazy. Elderly people go out when its nice in winter time, and cant even walk because the sidewalks are NEVER plowed, so its just hard to walk in layers of super soft snow and slush. That is not right especially with the population of these times were we have so many baby boomers getting ready to retire and such. OUR arenas, are pretty much pathetic, smaller towns have nice double arenas and we have falling down old wrecks. I know we have the sports plex, but that was such a big mistake letting someone design a building who had no knowledge of winters and the problems that would come from his choices. It could have been a great are for a double arena and still have room for the pool. disgusted at the wasted money and poor planning It's grown smaller, I was from Hearst so when I was young it was huge but now it's small and comfortable.

I believe Timmins is a great place to live and raise a family. I think that people here are still stuck in the 80s they are against gays, lesbians, young mothers and show no respect at all. People need to open their minds to people that are different, either its gay, lesbian, young mother, convict or simply someone with colorful hair.. We need to band together and protect these people. There are WAY to many kids that are taking their lives in this city and I believe that is primarily due to the lack of support in this city.. I love Timmins but I think there are MANY different ways we could come together and improve.. My feelings for Timmins are hopefull. We just need to stop thinking old and get with the times. We need to fix our roads, think about changing traffic flow a bit. There's still alot of work but I feel like we're going in the right direction at least. Just seems that it takes so long. Progressing slowly...always too late on major decisions and issues. We are years behind every other cities of a similar population base. Politicians too much talk, very little action. I have realized that it is very difficult to get people to support community events, unless it's free I have been a resident for 10 years. I find that although Timmins is a large city, it still has a small town perspective in elbow rubbing and back scratching, and if you are originally from here there are few people that don't know your life... people are always looking at other peoples lives/ business instead of dealing with their own lives From a big dirty old mining town to a nice place to live to home Seems to be growing which is good, but I think tourism is gone way down. The city seems to pick and choose who they support instead of embracing new ideas. For one, the new dog park is shunned by the city and pretty much on their own. Other cities have extended a large welcome to their parks and support it fully. I think Timmins is also moving in the wrong direction at times. We should be trying to do whatever it takes to invite new families here and tourists. Timmins has so much to offer but we seems to be too afraid to spend alittle to gain alot. I have slowly learn to dislike Timmins because of our petty ward politics It will always be hone Huge increase in traffic; more ethnic divercity; resurgence of local farming; With the changes in information technology over the past 15 years, Timmins has become less insular; people have a wider range of interests. Change is slow Downtown has slowly lost all the specialized shopping that made shopping there interesting. new development such as Walmart, Home depot, etc bring more of a larger centre atmosphere which is good.

I believe the city can be strong, but the focus is too narrow. People seem unable or unwilling to make a decision and run with it. Decide on being something and actually do it. Has remained the same. However has tended to lower expectations as economy has deteriorated in city and surrounding area. I find that Timmins is becoming more of a regional centre, which is great! But I find Timmins to be the best city in Ontario to cater to the outdoors type people. Timmins is the only city in Ontario to have snowmobile trail loops INSIDE the city! no seems to me that the older i get the less things there are to do in Timmins... No I havent been here very long. I believe that as I have aged, my perception of Timmins has become more realistic. While I am planning on leaving after I graduate high school, I have a more level-headed view of the family city that is Timmins. Timmins used to be a very safe and family united community and even though those words could still be used to describe Timmins every year they are falling lower on the list. I have come to realize how peaceful the city can be and how everyone knows everyone. Yes. I used to love Timmins, now I just want to leave. No it has not changed . During the time that i have known Timmins, it has became larger in expanding with bringing Walmart, Home Depot, and Canadian tire on the outskirts leaving more room for smaller businesses closer to the center of town. We have also began to create more activities such as concerts in the part to provide a sense of friendship and support in the community. All in all,l my perception has changed to focus on the city coming together. It hasn't changed to much except its growing in population. Its nice to see more cultures coming to the city. My perception hasn't changed at all. I have lived my entire life in Timmins and my opinion of it has not changed drastically. It has been a wonderful place to grow up in. I'm glad my parents chose this town to raise us, their children.

It seems to have become a more multi-cultural place, and it also seems to be expanding with larger store name brands most commonly known down South. Nothing changed no no change at all No change at all No change at all. I enjoy the outskirts and surrounding areas of the city because the people are very respectful and family based, however living in the city has changed my view to realize that some places aren't very safe for people, especially at night. Seems to expand more and more, but towards box stores Always liked Timmins- it is home and feels like home. Family is here, so that is a big part of the home idea. Went away for school, but Timmins was always the return trip. It has grown in respect for our natural resources, which is the foundation of our core as a community. I left Timmins in 1983 came back in 2009. The thing I noticed the most is the old buildings that are still here. In fact there is a building on the corner of Pine and Monita tha'ts been boarded up since the 80's. It's a terrible eye sore. Not much changed at all. I have lived all across Canada, in five different provinces. There are many wonderful opportunities for children in Timmins, my kids are extensively involved in all the sporting and artistic opportunities the city provides: hockey, soccer, bb, Take Two Theatre, choirs, dancing. etc. That was a pleasant surpise. And I have come to appreciate the natural surroundings and avidly use the trails and back roads for biking, etc. We now have better shopping, better restaurants, more women shelters and a dog park No. It has greatly improved. I first thought that I was a small boring town in the middle of nowhere. slow growth I feel that the "city" in general has had a chip on it's shoulder ever since the Shania Twain Centre was built. You don't get a majority standing up and saying "YES! I'm from Timmins and it's fantastic!" No town is ever perfect but we need to build pride in our community and promote it as the best place in Ontario. We can enjoy all four seasons, have major employers in all industries, have a

massive cultural and sport influnce and we should be openly celebrating this more. But the city tends to shoot itself in the foot when opportunities come because of a "low-self esteem" attitude, jealousy over neighbouring communities, and just doesn't support or step up to the plate to get our community, commerce, and ingenuity moving in the right direction. That needs to change! 114 Deciding if I wanted to come back to Timmins when I completed my postsecondary education was really difficult. I never had much of an opportunity to travel or experience bigger cities until I went away to school. Being down South, and then overseas, I realized that Timmins was lacking a lot in terms of cultural and environmental awareness, and community activities. After being away at school for a few years I came to the decision that I would never permanently live in Timmins (because of the nature of my degree but also because it wouldn't fulfil my personal desires). However, I started noticing changes in Timmins over the last few summers that I have been home and now, after graduating, I have decided to live here temporarily. I really, truly, have to say that Timmins has improved (in my opinion) immensely over the last few years in terms of community activities and events. I'm impressed with how much the farmer's market has expanded. Just last year the city started the Urban Market where local farmers and craftspeople can come out and sell their goods. There are more activities related to physical fitness such as the Kayak Challenge and the Timmins Golden Trails Half-Marathon (which attracts people from all over Canada). More and more immigrants are migrating to Timmins (often from a bigger Canadian city), giving individuals in Timmins the opportunity to broaden our cultural awareness and understanding. And now, we actually have a Multicultural Centre! After going away for school I never thought I would be happy coming back to live here, but I am. I would even consider staying here if the higher education that I'm seeking would be offered. While my perception of Timmins has changed in a positive way, it has remained the same in some ways. There's seems to be a lot of closed-mindedness here. I'm not sure if it's a lack of education, understanding, experience or something else but racism is very present in Timmins. My eyes are open to it now more than ever before. I'm sure it has always existed but only now have I started to realize just how present it is. There's racism toward First Nation Canadians as well as immigrants (which really doesn't make any sense if someone is non-Aboriginal AND racist toward immigrants). It seems like this is an issue that many are aware of as I understand that there will be a committee formed in Timmins with the specific task of sensitizing and educating the community on racial issues. All in all, my perception of Timmins has changed, for the best. Everyone wants the same services (toys) as they see on TV and in Toronto but they want it without paying for it. The City keeps expanding outwards but this costs more for taxpayers instead of expanding upwards. If we could encourage more density in our core, it would cost taxpayers less in property taxes because there are less roads, sewers, transmission lines, water lines... to service. Our downtown is dead (thank jebus for the Urban Park or there would be no reason to be downtown except to get to work and go home) because we keep expanding outward. The 2020 consultation sessions (and politicians of all stripes) claim that entrepreneurs are the backbone of the economy yet they worship the foreign owner resource companies and box stores; the latter providing only dead-end, minimum wage, part-time positions at the expense of Sep 14, 2012 12:20 PM

these entrepreneurs that are the backbone of the economy. If we are looking to brand out city, it needs to be to families or couples looking to raise a family. Our only competitive advantage over Toronto/Montreal/Ottawa and Sudbury is that we are small enough to be able to drive/walk home for lunch but big enough to have basic essential services. There is no point in lying about our great night life or our cultural events because they are non-existent and few and far in-between respectively. Timmins is not an outdoor playground or it is just as much as Toronto and Sudbury are outdoor playgrounds. Timmins is also not a tourist destination unless you know someone here that has a cottage or toys to play with. I have spread the word to friends about the cheap flights from Toronto to Timmins via Porter and their response was that if they can get cheap flights, they'd rather go to New York. As for jobs, there are a lot of skill trade positions, labour positions, and McJobs (like everywhere else) but not much else. So, it all boils down to being a great place to raise a family. Daycare programs are available and affordable, there are lots of schools, and there is lots of outdoors for kids to use to have fun. 116 As a child: Didn't matter one way or another where I lived. As a teen: Hated Timmins with a passion. Felt like there was nothing to do other than sneak into bars or do drugs, and I wasn't interested in doing either of those. The bowling alley was falling apart, and still is pretty horrible (the staff is something special, in a bad way) and the theatre was in such disrepair they had to shut it down for leaks for days at a time.. The community sucked (to put it in teen words), and there weren't a lot of events that had things for even a nature-loving open minded teen to enjoy. It all centered around little kids or adults. This is still a major problem (I know teens that can't wait to leave town for College, and chose a college far away because they're sick of the north and its lack of stuff to do), but it's slowly getting rectified. Theater is fixed, and my sister in law is opening a laser tag arena. Awesome. As an Adult: I was ready to leave Timmins until this summer. Had plans to look at houses in the Ottawa/Montreal area and all that. But something about this summer seems to have woken up the residents. I don't know if it's the Timmins 100 celebrations or what, but people are starting to come on board for the activites and events etc.. And of course the city is piling events on and making them grander than ever. Small businesses are getting a bigger boost, the city is slowly expanding, and with the new mining ventures there is more money coming into the economy from outside (even though I don't approve of the northern mining plans, I can't deny that they are going to help Timmins as a city. (The environment is another matter entirely). So I'm starting to have more hope for my hometown and will stick around to see how it goes. I'd love to get on board with a project for a permanent artisan square and have a lot of ideas, and hope to run with them once my youngest starts school. My perception of Timmins has definitely changed. I feel it hasnt grown as a city at all. There is nothing to hold people here. No good restaurants, shopping(many people go to Sudbury or Toronto) no nice theatres, art galleries, museums. It seems like there is more violence and drugs, vandalism(most likely to boredom0. I live close to downtown, and its not uncommon for me to see drunks at 930am,or see blood and vomit on the streets. I think the people are still friendly for the most part. Timmins has made many gains with many new business, some modern stores, new college/expanded campuses, downtown is much cleaner, more and better Sep 14, 2012 8:50 AM

events and there is the beginnings of more pride within the City and amongst residents. 119 Yes, living here and in other cities, there is not much to do in Timmins especially at night and on weekends. We need more shopping so we dont have to drive to Sudbury or further. Moved here very recently I feel in the 12 years I have been here there has been a lot of improvements. But to draw on the tourism industry more improvements are required. If your not into the outdoors (ex hunting, fishing) then there is not a lot to do. Specialy in the summer when people take vacations. More attractions for kids and adults.I noticed on facebook there was a proposal for a wake park. Good idea for the young people but bad location at Gillies lake. Maybe Mini Pearl would be better. Gillies is used a lot by older walkers and I don't think a wake board park would be good there. My perception on the city has changed. I dont enjoy living here, the jobs are scarce, drugs and violence are more prevalent, there is nothing to do with my kids, shopping sucks (I feel I need to leave town for decent shopping). There arent any decent restaurants, lounges, theatres, galleries, museums,or event centres. Most activities here are centered around alcohol. Seems as though everything is more rundown. There doesn't seem to be the pride that once existed. I get the feeling that there is a culture of "good enough" that has become pervasive... where the bare minimum is done and no more. Yes. The community seems to have a significant socio-economic division in the population. There are many new businesses but they are not very well supported. Get the feeling that the community does not embrace change and evolution from blue-collar roots meets resistance. Not really Love it! yes Yes, growing up and into my teen years Timmins had numerous exciting events. Events such as concerts, snowmobile races, festivals etc. As the years went by we seem to have less and less of such events. It seems like the moral of the city has diminished and that even when such smaller events would take place the lack of participation is surprising. Could this possibly be due to the fact that Timmins is a Mining town? Not really. It is not very welcoming for outsiders. All my friends are from out of town or immigrants. No native born in timmins. The economic development is doing a good job attracting new business. The housing situation has gotten worse, less available. I hope some by laws are changed to allow more people to build their Sep 13, 2012 7:23 PM

houses on less then 5acres. Half of that space would be great. 131 I was born here but lived away for 21 years visiting now and then. I like the trail system and I see a lot more volunteering but what hasn't changed is the negative, self-centered and self-righteous attitudes I remember so well. By the way, I've lived in several places since I left so I have a plenty of places big and small to compare to. Sep 5, 2012 5:50 PM

Accessibility still needs work for some places - the infrastructure is there (chair lifts, elevators, etc) but finding the personnel to operate it is sometimes a challenge. People visit mainly for family/friends Outside perception is a small town in the middle of nowhere and very cold Teens. what about teens? Compared to other northern communities my responses would be more possitive. Would love to see an english university Limited public transportation infrastructure We need to end the ward-township wars. Schumacher and Porcupine are townships of Timmins, we need to be one. Recreation and outdoor opportunities are 2 different things. We lack great recreational activities but outdoor activities are plentiful. City needs to invest in itself before it can become a highly attractive place for others to invest outside of extremely high demand opportunities...ie new hotels there has to be an incentive for young people to choose to stay or come back to Timmins once their post secondary education is complete. Stop the migration of young professionals to the south Timmins needs to upgrade on all aspects. Fresh ideas are needed to make this city a better place. Entertainment is not promoted enough, or when it is, they typically cater to the upper crust, admission or cost of events high. Need alot of improvements for sure Not enough Apartment housing for Seniors While the "nature" of Timmins is beautiful, the urban landscape is not. I speak with many southern Ontario people every year and we are very well know for mining, snowmobiling and hunting, that's about it. Nope. Price of gas ALWAYS ranges in the highest bracket in the province I think people not familiar with Timmins will judge based on it's isolated location and history as a mining town

New reisadents OFTEN comment to me it's hard to get information on sprots leagues, social groups,... which is a MUST for new people to get grounded here and make friends. The comments I have received are: I can't believe you have parks like this right in the middle of the City - very impressed with Hollinger Park and Gillies Lake. I have also heard: you need a couple more good restaurants, more hotel accomodations, and wish there was a nice place to go clubbing. We could also use a full time university. Terrible roads Have no quality nightlife or restaurants Outside perception is a small town in the middle of nowhere and very cold ? Highway 11 to get here north of North Bay needs major improving with more passing lanes. I was at the Shania Twain building one afternoon when visitors arrived here. I over heard them talking and were disappointed that the Shania Twain Centre had so little to offer. They had driven so many miles (I can't recall but it was far in the States) and for what? Timmins had nothing to offer and neither did the Twain Centre. People come from far away to see an attraction and there is little or nothing much to look at. If Timins is going to showcase something or somebody, do it to the extent that it will leave an everlasting impression, not a disappointment. Timmins has to put money in it's endevours to reep the rewards. Give the people what they want, entertainment and pleasure. The Shania Twain Centre should have a bar, restaurant, games room, other entertainers as well, a museum of local and nearby talent. Wake up. Not to my knowledge gas is expensive here N/A The questions are formulaic. very diverse in cultures. the movie theatre is located where parking is an issue, and even with the renovations it is still not what my out of province company is expecting in such a growing community. Far from Toronto... Cold shoulder seasons -spring and fall Fewer ethnic or high end restaurants-Friends who visited during Canada called Timmins "Hicksville" and they come from Chelmsford. They were also upset about the smoking in non designated areas at the Canada day event at the Mac Very isolated

Unless people come to Timmins for it's outdoor activities, it's seen as an ugly city with not much to do. It's isolated enough that unless they have a reason to come here such as family, they likely won't. Hunting, fishing and snowmobiling can all be done in plenty of other communities. Timmins has so much potential and it can be a beautiful city. The only reason I'm so critical is that I love it here and would like to see it be as great as it can be. Lack of recreational activities in the Downtown core vicinity. Many of them say that it is cold and it is where Shania Twain is from. Some other remember the sink holes. Some know it is a mining town. Other than that most outsiders don't know that much about Timmins. There is no reason for people from Northern Ontario to repeatedly visit Timmins outside of work. We make poor choices about one-off visit facilities (read: Shania, museums, tours) when we should focus on being a "hub" for the wants and needs of northern residents. Can't remember the last time someone from Hearst drove down to see the Timmins Symphony for the weekend, but they would come down five times a year to play in hockey tournaments at a new facility where they could watch a Junior A game. I believe it is mostly seen as an isolated small city with nothing to do and no reason to come but to visit someone specific. It is a blue-collar, union town. This is really reflected in choice of MP and MPP (NDP). Despite the fact that they have no clout in government, NDP is the big party around here for its union stance. It is not a backwater Short employment opportunities and extremely high taxes and gas prices when I was at the under 17's a few years back all i heard from outsiders is how much of a dump Timmins was....just being honest accomodations Hear comments about how lousy our arenas are from outsiders and visitors all the time. Self interested No community spirit Outsiders automatically think of our city as being very far away from the rest of the world. They also think it's either always cold here or we're living in primitive conditions. transportation into the city needs to be more attractive. Highway 101 is not in the best of shape for people who can't afford to fly here, they must drive so let's give them a decent road to drive on. Now that we don't have any rail services the highways are more important than ever. No comment. The roads, visitors have commented how bad the roads are.

Very poor customer service in the retail sector. dirty city and surrounding woods Outsiders may come here and think that the city in illmaintaned and the youth is disrectful.. Also, the driving here is HORRIBLE!!! Uncourteous drivers, poor roads, ungroomed roadsides, very few beautiful trees for a Northern community, lack of parking downtown, local media training grounds for rookies...very little substance, lack of great events musically, sportswise, entertainmentwise, etc...must drive at least 3 hours to see decent concerts. Road construction extremely slow and annoying. It takes two years of blocked roads to complete 1 klm (example Jubilee St.) Gas prices are too high. Close minded, slow mentalities, behind the times. Yes, YOU IGNORE PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND THERE NEEDS.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pioneer place. Way the h up there Prices on everything seems high cleanliness and beautification of our community is poor signage is poor in the City Welcoming signage is non existant Restaurant choice is poor That we are a beer drinking, hockey fenatic, hard living mining TOWN. I often here comments regarding the lack of upkeep and beautificatin of either businesses, residential areas. Although efforts have been made to access walking trails. There is a lack of trails for bicycles or even for adequate pedestrian traffic. Possibly a need to block off sections of downtown and permanently provide for market area or for specialized boutique area with strictly pedestrian traffic. Mining! We are very well known for mining. We are also well known for labour jobs available. For many people in southern Ontario Timmins is a much closer option for work compared to the oil rigs or oil sands. None that I can think of. the roads need improvement(repairs).more advertising, signage, let people know what is going on and where.signing for walking trails(we have beautiful walking trails but few are marked)with signs. flyers with a map of the city and surrounding area to show people where trails are, sothey can enjoy them.we need railway access for passengers. No. I think that they would say it's a tiny, little town that has a lot of potential. "... there's nothing here." no

I hear allot that we have not much in the way of entertainment from young to old.. Not that I know of. Small, little to do other than the Gold Mine Tour Good outdoor environment around the city for camping N/A ? N/A Arenas are old and run down- break down often. Mining is all we do...not true They do not know where we are located. Not sure I heard very good things about people coming to Timmins just to come and use the dog park. People from Matheson, Iroquois Falls, Cochrane etc... People think we are in the middle of no where and have no concept of what Timmins actually does offer. My friend who was originally from Finland said that Timmins reminded her of Finland. Others really enjoyed Chez-Nous. And they liked how beer was cheaper in bars than it was in Toronto. I've had several friends and family members come in from out of town, and the genral consencus is that as they drove into town, some of them felt like they were driving into a shabby bypass town. It just doesn't LOOK good. Timmins needs more color. I know we're a mining town, but decorate a little. Aside from that, many of them commented on how the buildings downtown are just falling into shambles, and that it looks like a ghetto (My opinion, it pretty much is a ghetto.) It seems that people think of us as backwoods bush people. I have heard many times that Timmins is at least 10 years behind the other cities. It would be great to not have this kind of reputation Racism. Pollution from resource extraction. Overdependence on resource extraction. Not much here to keep them for an exentended period of time. Need more attractions for year round entertainment I have heard that we are behind the times by at least 10 years. Its frustrating to be thought of as some kind of uneducated redneck. We come off as small minded, and sometimes I feel we dont see the big picture of how certain changes could positively affect our community. It seems as though change is especially hard here.

The community has cliques. I think Timmins wishes it was more than it is. While I think most residents understand what our community is about, its wishing perhaps creates an erroneous impression in outsiders that Timmins is an arrogant and somewhat self-centred community with illusions of grandeur that may be above its station. It is not on a major highway and as such, it does not enjoy accidental tourists. Timmins is of a size that sits between a town and a city. Because of its size Timmins requires an interesting and carefully balance treatment between large town and small town. One often feels that Timmins tries to engage the world as a big town - I am not sure it is as successful as it wishes to be. Too much focus on the head frame an the mining industry. Althoughh thats what Tiimins was founded on and still is very active, there are a lot of other aects not being pormoted to the best it could.

Page 7, Q17. What makes Timmins a better place to live or do business than other larger northern Ontario cities? (Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Sault St. Marie, or North Bay)?

Vibrant industrial base which is growing and provides opportunities for everyone; BUT must work to diversify our economy as well during these "boom" times. I beleive we need a greater emphaisi on hosting sports events ( all levels) and outdoor acitivites like eco-tourism to a greater degree... That's what we have to figure out - it's home to us, but we have to make it so outsiders think that too. ? It doesn't we are too far north Smaller and convenience. I don't know wrt to other northern towns, but relative to Mississauga/Burlington where I came from I spend way less time commuting!!! Bilingual workforce is available; opportunities exist honestly i dont think we are in the same category as the other cities - we are considered one of the 5 major cities in the north but we pail in comparison of strat planning - attracting business and establishing a positive environment to retain our youth Don't know what others offer for their communities. Know a little about Sudbury which have plenty of entertainment during the day and night for all ages, including teens. lots of places for businesses to open downtown. many vacant storefronts Its resources (minerals). Timmins has more a welcoming atmosphere, because it is smaller than the other cities. Easier to get things done, because somebody knows somebody who can help you out. Still has a small town feeling, where everyone knows everyone else. more opportunities for easy access to nature trails and camping, fishing, hunting, and outdoor activities ? Nothing. The TEDC in particular is ineffective. Since its inception, it has done nothing to diversify the economy. Better place to do business in because of the population/outside communities that depend on Timmins as their main shopping plaza. There is a much need for new retail business because the only thing making people make the long/dangerous highway trip to sudbury is the large box stores like Costco, Old Navy, and other retail chains that are so popular today. Now cheap flights with PORTER. Mining opportunities and expertise.

It doesnt , it should attract more people, with a Casino, with an indoor/ outdoor amptheatre. On the scale of those other cities, I think we are average or worse. I don't find it is a better place except my spouse has better job opportunities here and our family is here. Staging point for development of future resources in the far north. Better place to live because of its centrality in the north to major industry. Same reason to do business Honestly, Timmins has nothing on the cities mentioned above. I've been to all of them many times and every time I go, I think to myself "Why doesn't Timmins do/have this?" I know we exist for industry, but if we even want to become more than a "mining town", we need to make an effort and make the city more apealing. Smaller city and close proximity of most facilities. it's a small city, but not too small. with a wide variety of opportunities available. Cleaner, our city definitely looks visually more appealing and clean than North Bay, Sudbury or the Sault. I think annual city events throughout the year are great such as the Carnival, Ribfest, The Great Canadian Kayaking Challenge, the Half Marathon and Triathlon. Sudbury to busy traffic etc... We can be in the office at 5pm and then on our dock having a beverage at 530pm. Timmins is closer to Toronto than Thunder Bay, but farther from the US. Timmins receives more tax dollars from mining than Sault St. Marie and North Bay, but has unnecessarily lower taxes than either of those cities which limits the city's operating power. I can't think of anything for Sudbury, unless you prefer to live in a smaller city. I don't think it really is a better place than the other towns. Sudbury has much more to offer, North Bay has more as well and is less isolated, I hear (never been myself) that Sault St. Marie is actually a nice town... At this time, I don't think Timmins really has an advantage over those communities, except for Sudbury...housing is less expensive here and the environment is cleaner. In my opinion, the only thing appealing about Timmins are the outdoor activities and spaces at our doorsteps that set it apart from other cities. Yes, we have Arts and Culture but those types of activities are only accessible if you can afford to pay over $100 for an evening out to experience them. My family has a combined income of over $120 000 a year and I still can't afford to take my whole family on such an outing. less traffic.

Smaller community, you know everyone. It isn't a better place we need to make this to be different then those other cities. We have tried for to long to be like Sudbury when we are not. I think its better because of the size easy to get around and are crime rate is much better It's location in respect to the booming northern areas Safe and friendly place to raise a family. Compared to Sudbury, where I lived last year, Timmins is better because everything is closer. I lived in Azilda and had to drive about 30 minutes to go to school (Laurentian). My husband was driving 40 minutes to get to Levack for work, and after work, we could not get an appointment to the bank because he would get into town after 4:15. I also love that the businesses are open late, and that we have a 24H grocery store. There are parks everywhere I look, so it is not hard to enjoy the outside and nature. I also think that Timmins is a better place to live because there are so much more people who speak French, my mother tongue. There are also many schools from different background, which are great to choose from. Here, in Timmins, I have options! Not as many as Sudbury, but I don't need that much. I used to live in Thompson, Manitoba, and that was not great. So here, I feel that there is so much to do for everyone, and again, I don't have to drive half an hour to get to it. My husband and I took dance lesson, but we had to drive 30 minutes to get to it. It is pretty discouraging in winter. I have never lived in North Bay, Thunder Bay or Sault St. Marie, but visited a couple of them, and really, the distance from one end to the other of town is the greatest asset Timmins has. Timmins: A small place with a heart for everyone! Other than job opportunities, nothing Timmins seems to have better access to outdoors activities than the above cities. Nothing people go to the other places first Job opportunities and outdoor activities/trails. Most other areas the other northern cities have more to offer. nothing... seriously; poor post secondary education, fragile economy (if the mines close, the city goes with it), weak shopping center (the Timmins Square looks like a 70's shopping center with lot's of vacant space), the only real industry is mining ... so if your not in the mining industry, there is practically nothing for a professional in Timmins (well nothing better then the city above already provides) Timmins is smaller than other northern Ontario cities. Depending on the industry, it is sometimes easier to start a business because of less direct competition. is it a better place?

It is not a better place. Timmins is not a better place to live as it does not foster a sense of entreprenial spirit. The city is not conducive to people wanting to start a business nor giving tax breaks to people who want to open a store/business. Safe City Friendly Easy access Can't answer this as I have only visited these other places and not lived in them therefore I cannot compare. ripe for the pickings I think Timmins is a better place to live then the above mentioned places because we have different outdoor recreation areas to go to and lots of walking trails to enjoy. Can get anywhere within ten minutes...less time driving, less gas consuption. Nature at your doorstep. Smaller schools with good quality education. Fresh air, friendly people, less crime. Lost of development opportunities, not as far North as SSM or TBay. At the moment not but our attitude is better. Not a total Union town, economy is going The fact we are smaller and support local businesses over huge franchise businesses We've got a long way to go......to get away from "lunch bucket" and "old boys club" mentality We have a Great Downtown to invest in and Great infrastucture. A great airport. Lots of land to develop. A Great hospital, Many schools and colleges. New Library, Museum Centre, Police Community Building and Great Police service. Great potential for new mining and forestry endeavours, Manufacturing, tourism. It is more vibrant and offers more shopping and places to go Other than jobs in the mining sector probably nothing Lack of congestion. Timmins has a much better snowmobiling season. The cottages and cottage life around Timmins (and Thunder Bay maybe) is much more rural and secluded than the other cities in the north of which is a plus for many. not a better place to live, but in regards to business Timmins is a growing economy and beats the rest with the exception of Sudbury in employment opportunities Smaller community therefore in theory more opportunities but these need to be marketed so that the public is aware of them.

very friendly.beautiful surroundings.major highways.airport. I believe Timmins is a better place to live or do business than other, larger cities in Northern Ontario because it is a very friendly and welcoming city, and the locals are very hospitable. It's tinier and the traffic is never unbearable. Probably nothing things that are better out of town rather than in timmins are the shopping malls, they are bigger, alot more stores. there entertainment is better, and they have more to offer out of town. It is much smaller than other larger communities which makes it easier to get the word across, cheaper to advertise and easier to get to know the community and the people who will eventually invest in your business. Because the community is small, it is an ideal place to raise a family. There is a school in every community, and every neighborhood is welcoming and safe. friendly clean environment The idea that it still feels like a small northern town. Timmins is a better place to start a business because there isnt really any shopping or big name restaurants, as opposed to Sudbury or Northbay. There is less competition in Timmins therefore,if a person decided to open a business, they would probably do really well. Timmins is a smaller city. That fact allows for a closer community, creating more bonds between people. It creates a family environment for everyone and support is always there. its a quaint little community where people from all around the city know one another. Friendlier city, close knit atmosphere that allows fast word of mouth Timmins is better to do business in because we dont have fantastic shopping or many fancy restaurants so if someone decided to open up a new store or restaurant, they would probably do really well because we dont have anything like it already. Smaller so it's not easy to get lost and you know more people and what's going on because we have a smaller community. mining nothing mining opportunities small town lots of people know each other and support each other

Lots of space but still close to everything. 4 minutes to work can't be beat. Small town feel within a larger town. We are a centralized "hub" for our neighbours and we provide many needed services to the residents of Northeastern Ontario. Mining oppertunities If it wasn't for the fact that there are minerals here I don't think we can compete with those others places AT ALL. Timmins is not making itself attractive to outsiders, particularly with our refusal to invest in recreational facilties. Sorry to be negative, but you come here for work and that's about it. It just is Smaller town, more personable It has a high income for residents. the closeness of all things Simply put the potential for growth. We are on a main thoroughfare in the north and has become instrumental in the delivery of products and services from both ends of the province. There are lots of job opportunities, however; these are mainly in the service industry and in trades. It's not a very busy city, which some people may like. It is surrounded by lakes and trails. Good place to do business in specific fields (anything mining related). Miners also make a wage far above minimum wage, which means that there are many people/families in Timmins that have money to spend - which would be good for business. Nothing. We are not on any main routes and we are further from the main centres than Sudbury, SSM, and North Bay. It isn't. Right now, nothing. Potentially, doing business here would be good for the smaller communities surrounding Timmins (and current residents) if we had services and shopping that most people need to go south to get. Ive heard that the good things about living here is the camping/fishing/hunting and the smaller community feel(friendlier people, less violence) City is smaller and much easier to move around - less congestion etc. Airport is much more accessible in comparison to Sudbury and SSM. City is located strategically for serving the region and is the largest service center to where much of the future resource potential exists (north to the coast) For those who like outdoors - Timmins in comparison to the others virtually has the outdoors at their doorstep, surrounded by boreal forest and hundreds of lakes closer then these other centres. The small size has many (but not all) of the amenities of a larger city, yet still has more of a small town feel Not much other than they may feel its safer.

Not sure if it is not sure Right now I dont feel its better than the other places for business or to live. I think it has the potential to be a good place for business, since there are many smaller communities around that would also benefit. Its hard to travel further south to get what you need, and if Timmins could keep businesses open here(hopefully locally owned) that wouldnt happen as much. Proximity to Toronto. Sudbury is too big and spread out. Takes forever to get across town. north Bay has lots of government services, not so much business services. Soo has proximity to USA which brings other challenges and opportunities. Timmins is a small, comfortable community with opportunities for people to establish themselves and live a comfortable life. Things are close Timmins is steady - it has weathered economic storms admirably despite having its share of bullets to dodge. It has faired well by the standards of some of its neighbours. It's smaller in size, better to raise a family for some aspects. It is a multicultural community, especially francophone but it is not show cased. Because we are further away from major centres, people tend to shop locally. There is plenty floating around here so the right business can make a lot of money

what attracts you to our City Mining town, redneck town, bars bars bars. Timmins has been branded. Weak. Timmins is a great community, it always goes beyond for activities for children which makes this city a great place to raise a family in. The city of Timmins is definitely booming so as a new business thinking about setting up shop here I would strongly encourage this as well the community would love to see new vendors. New vendors attract more people, and attracting more people means more money for the businesses, in turn making the residents happier and proud to live here. If you are a in a field related to mining, healthcare, or social services, there are employment opportunities for you - anything else... there's always the call centre. Good but we need to put our money where are mouth is because the services offered are limited Come to Timmins where the city is one of the biggest in the north yet run like the smallest Timmins is a mining town located in northern Ontario and provides job opportunities for people in that industry. The City has great opportunities to experience the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. Trying to attrack outside business is great but we should be fostering local people who want to establish businesses. There are a number of downtown stores that are empty, provide an incentive for businesses to come to the downtown - property tax incentive, many places are owned by the City - provide a break on rent. average but mil rate has to be lowered Too limited, nothing to make Timmins stand out amongst all of the other cities making the same sales pitch. COme join us we will help you find employees. Economy is good. Advantages for certain things The Mayor and Council say that we are open for Business. Not very convincing. No pzzazz. Very stale message about heart of gold. We can't continue pitching an idea that has defined the last 100 years. Need to identify with the region and the immediate regional municipalities. Many outsiders visiting Timmins are from the adjacent regions and we need to acknowledge that they are more than welcome and that we share common interests. We say that we are a regional city, yet many residents from adjacent areas prefer the diversity and the availability of services of larger centers like Sudbury. Timmins' current sales pitch is a very promising plan that allows for much debate and input, which makes it a very good pitch.

16 17 18 19 20

I find our sales pitch is somewhat really poor. There aren't big things that could seriously draw someone to our town. don\t know We are the city with the heart of gold with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of northern ontario. Timmins is described as a great place to live, work, and play. I think the TEDC, like any economic development agency is selling the advantages and key business and quality of life factors to potential investors. I think the sales pitch can be a little unclear with a mixture of old mining heritage and attempts to pitch timmins also as a more modern city with modern infrastructure etc. How others within the City (if they are) are selling the city is not clear to me. A great place to live, work and do business. The pitch is fair but I doubt the "catch" will be considering the negative aspects of living in a northern community with little facilities.

it's basically our mark in the world. Timmins need a whole new immage. Since this 100th began, all I heard about was mining, What about the forest industry that strived here for many many years? It also shaped Timmins just as much as mining. Lumber industry is down for now but one day will sustain Timmins again when mining has fallen. Mining is not re-newable, forestry is. It's a start, but it lacks broad buyin from the community because city leaders don't articulate the message what is it? its not known to most residents. Trying to appeal to immigrants who might otherwise stay in Southern Ontario. It Big business - investments simplicity At least they are trying... Positive and Regionally based The thought of We're open for Business is Good but we need the HOW What is it? Need more imagination. Need to appeal to a younger generation. Every aspect of it. Well I like our gym/training facilities but they should be upgraded and made better and stronger. don't know it focuses on the city's generous character and the natural beauty of the area... That there is an actual sales pitch. Quality of life factors - modern health care, infrastrucutre, technology, educational facilities, immediate access to vast outdoor and recreational opportunities etc Economic driven It's positive

Mining, mining mining. Rough neck community. It's not a "sales pitch" it's a stale exercise of going through the motions Focuses too much on immediate job fillings in the aforementioned mining/healthcare/social services sectors and not in other white-collar professional fields that require postsecondary schooling in the south - especially for youth from the north. It's not consistent. It's too broad. It doesn't target any particular group of people. We are always waiting for others to do for us. Why not foster from within. There are many young people who would remain in the City if they were given a chance to set up a business after higher education. We need to promote distance learning with Universities to at least have a chance to retain our young people in this community while taking higher education so that they remain in the city after. ???? Too similar to many other cities...nothing substancial to make Timmins rise above the others. Not enough work at changing existing population views I don't like the fact that Mayor and Council say we are open for business but no one is telling us what is being done! Ie How are we open for business. Too much Red Tape to do or open anything. Preference given to some and not to others. Process is being rushed. Take the time. Wait until other steps have been developed. Possibly other original ideas will take shape. Nothing. .. I dont know no comment it is not a sophisticated campaign; I think the message is good but the delivery is not strategic. Does the city have a communication strategy. It's great to have branding (looking forward to seeing what you come up with) but it has to go hand in hand with a plan to promote that branding.... That we are not selling ourselves to ourselves. Local companies are not speaking to high school students to let them know about the jobs that will be available in the future and instead are looking to get outsiders to fill positions. If the current population has an incentive to stay here, then we will be better at marketing ourselves to outsiders. Need to be careful of how Timmins is sold from a mining perspective. I still believe "Mining is at our Core" and it is true one of Timmins uniqueness in Ontario for sure is the gold mining history. However today we should be promoting that aspect as modern, leading edge - a high tech sector that not only has mines but also many mining service companies with national and

rennovated state, is a sorry excuse for a movie theatre. I've been to many small towns with populations much smaller than Timmins that have modern theatres such as "Galaxie" etc. When people are considering moving to a new city, they look at lifestyle. The winters here are long, so unless you enjoy snowmobiling, your options are limited. Even the sportsplex is sad. The changerooms are terrible, there are no "kiddie" pools and it just has no "athmosphere". Look at the pool Cochrane has. During the winter, it's nice to have a place to bring your family that doesn't require four layers of clothing. 20 21 Higher education institutions, organizations affiliated with arts and culture, information technology. Young guys who are trained as electricians, mechanics, etc who would be interested in the jobs available in mining and who the recreation offered in the area might appeal to. Mining industry. Forestry, we have lots Outdoor recreation. Sports Large government buildings like the Veterans affairs building for example Young professionals in the mining industry, stop trying to create artificial economic markets. Focus on your strengths and use the windfall to avoid economic downturns. We should be aiming for the creative economy. Knowledge workers...people who offer servicces that are not subject to boom and bust. Mining and mining supply businesses. Outdoor activity related businesses, tours...An English university. restaurants that are locally owned. Mom and pop places that offer something different... perhaps something ethnic. Big Box retailers like Costco, Silver City NEW SPORTS COMPLEX! call centres, auto, casino, health, high tech We should persue sports tourism opportunities utilizing our better facilities (Reg Athletics & Soccer complex, Ski Runners, etc) and work towards public/private partnerships for new facilities. People in the education field, mining field, social work field are great to reach. I used to live in Thompson Manitoba, a place where there are about 13 000 people, also a mining town. I think that Timmins has a lot more to offer than there, and it is the same type of people living there. Some people have been looking for other options but with a similar feeling. Total waste of time Get some of the bigger shopping stores in here lots of citizens travel out if town to shop on a regular basis Right now the foucs of a sales pitch for Timmins should focus around mining, education, and health care. good city to raise a family in terms of education and health care is Timmins main draw right now. Despite common believe there is other cities with trail networks as good as ours and this is really the top selling feature in regards to quality of life. Other recreation facilities need upgrading/replacing. The city refuses to accept new modern sports and open areas for them to utilize and enjoy (jet skiis, 4 wheelers, dirt bikes etc). Instead of trying to enforce and keep them from places we don't want them used why don't we create a section that is dedicated to them and promote it. 34 35 First nations we need more doctors especially those trained in senior care a good shoe maker would be great we need good restaurants that cater to a mature adult crowd not sport types with loud music. we need more senior apartments or condos No comment. Young people, families and not only doctors. We need to increase our profile as a City first, the rest will take care of itself. We need to make this city a "City" a place where people want to come. Trying to reach businesses does not seem to be the problem. Being blocked by town council and making to costs so ridiculous that investors lose interest. Other businesses blocking competition. We need to have a COSTCO in Timmins. This would give competition to WalMart and we need to have a choice. Perhaps if there was competition the customer service would improve at all retail outlets. Mining and recreational related Fine dining Timmins is a friendly area to raise children, we have a great community that gathers to help others. Timmins is growing, we have the population to fill jobs. Timmins could also use some NICE bars, instead of all the holes we have. manufacturing Sales pitch should try to reach young intelligent business people. We need more trades people, just look at all of the mining camps and OPG projects, all people from elsewhere just working in this region, but spending their money elsewhere, in their own communities. Manufacturing industries, multicultural people Mining suppliers, Energy, Consulting businesses to far north. Companies who need more space and less population Service industries that would improve our "regional centre ' status Manufacturers; . Boutique stores ie. galleries; northern art, ice creamery, ethnic food shop, furnituremaking,; Farming the north ie grass fed beef, free range chickens and eggs; root vegetable farms (potatoes, carrots, beets etcetera); Wind farms, Solar power, Casino. Ski resort on the Mine rock hills. 50 Entertainment, sports entertainment. Need to reach out to citizens in surrounding areas (Kapuskasing, Hearst, Kirkland Lake, Rouyn-Noranda, etc.....) Take example from Abitibi-Temiscamingue area, how they cooperate and integrate their services and business interests. In that area their is a shared interest in all aspects of social and economic life. What is good for one area is also good for the other. We have to act fast because many smaller communities are disintegrating and could potentially be void of their population within a short time. Attract home builders and build town homes in Porcupine. 4 homes in one. I feel many southerners are waiting for town/cookiecuter homes to move up and set up their next chapters in their lives. People from all backgrounds and any sort of company but smaller ones would be preferable. Young families, new businesses. I think they should try to reach the youth of Timmins since there isn't much offered here. no real opinion I am not sure. silver city movie theatre. yogen fruz, roots, aeropostle, taco bell, footlocker, champs. Businesses that these sales pitches would try to reach would be small businesses just starting out. It is cheaper to begin a business here rather than in a larger community because there are less people to compete with. The first industry that comes to my mind when i think of Timmins would be forestry, we cover alot of land which consists mainly of forestry and water. As i previously stated the City needs more attractions that would appeal to all ages. People in the business of shopping outlets and restaurants, since there isnt really any shopping in Timmins and there isnt as much fancy restaurants to go out and celebrate for an anniversary or retirement. The sales pitch should try reaching greater retail stores and shops to increase revenue. Timmins would also be a great place for winter sports tournaments. Many kids are interested in the arts. Yet, there are few organizations that allow them to develop creatively. We do have multiple dance academies but I believe there is still a HUGE market for businesses willing to teach regular acting, painting, voice, etc. classes. Sep 18, 2012 3:49 PM

We should attract the youth and older by creating a big sports facility that can hold games that people come to play at or watch. We could attract all ages by improving on our mall with different stores that will attract outside towns such as Iroquois Falls and New liskard Mining or forestry I think that they should try to reach out to people who are not involved in mining, because I believe that the town is too focused on that industry of mining and doesn't offer or advertise much of anything else. better sports facilities Sports Facilities I think everyone should try and be reached a variety of different people Bigger non chain busibess Mining and forestry, but Timmins has a great work force, highly educated and very diverse. Bilingual population is an excellent selling point especially for outservicing and online businesses. Educational sectors (University)/ young entrepreneurs looking to start new businesses/ manufactures no comment The Ring of Fire is going to explode in the next few years an dit will be a remote mining camp. People getting jobs there will choose to live in TB, Sault, Sudbury or Timmins....how can we position ourselves as an attractive alternative to those bigger towns? Doctors Bring in an industrial factory to employ more people of some kind. Facilitate housing development to support the "ring of fire". Reach out and develop more festivals to lure tourists and show them what a great place this is to settle (which can be done with govenment employment programs and grants to make it sustainable until it takes off). People: Local high school students. Businesses: None. If a service/product is not in Timmins, let the free market bring it. The obvious would be mining, science and technology businesses. But there is also a niche here for artisan/vendor supply companies (not craft stores. But actually suppliers such as Texlima, Club Beads, Mobico, Uline etc..). There is also a high demand for maternal wear, unique baby gear, outdoors equipment, trades supply companies, etc.. Im not sure what this question is asking. "Kinds of people?" Middleclass? Not drug lords? Types of businesses...well we need everything.Id like more recreational things(indoor rock climbing, indoor mini putt, arcade..ziplining?) No

more pizza joints please.Higher end restaurants with a dress code, something like Hygraders(sp). Better quality stores, something to knock out the monopoly Bucs/Tweed and Hickory has. Healthier living things: yoga, restaurants. Arts and culture: galleries/museums(even a travelling one). 79 Business - that don't ship high volume/heavy product as one of our disadvantages is location and distance to markets. Some business targets we should consider could be mining supply/service companies that have work with the growing resource industry in the region and north to the coast. Business that require a bilingual workforce (english/french). Value added business potential. For attracting residents - it should be focused on the job opportunities - likely in the trades and technology fields and individuals that enjoy the outdoors (this is not a location for someone who only loves large cities etc) Go with economic diversification - think Co-ops, arts and culture sector, environmental innovation, education (post secondary, Aboriginal controlled). Get creative so that Timmins can make a name for itself beyond being the place to get a job in the mining sector. Shopping more clothing store for older people. There are many for the young here More restaurants Doctors, specialists, trades, folks to work for the mining companies PEOPLE: those who like outdoor sports....especially in Winter BUSINESS: Franchises. Timmins has lots of potential. Not only does it offer everything you need, and if not, Sudbury is only at 3 hours (Thompson-Winnipeg = 8 hour trip by car), but it is very friendly. We have an airport, which connects us to an international airport in less than one hour. It is also doable by car, which allows anyone not from here to visit their family a lot faster. All the problems in Timmins are due to its hostile attitude towards the arts and the youth. We spend time and money on silly surveys, roadmaps, useless buildings. And corrupt fundraisers that only benefit the production company. We do not recognize our talented folks nor do we allow a natural culture to develop. Search Timmins in YouTube what you find is what we are.. The best thing to happen here culturally was the punk rock shows that we're constantly harassed by the police... There are many openings within our existing indusry. The colleges continue to expand. What would be nice would be to supplement this with state of the art recreation and culture facilities and possible a university. We respect your history and heritage... We're a multi-cultural city wonderful outdoor recreational facilities No comment. Property tax incentives, Opportunities, availability, friendly it should be conveyed that Costco in Timmins would draw in people from all over the North. When you consider that people come to Timmins from outside areas to shop now imagine what it would be if we had a COSTCO. This in turn would be a ripple effect. They shop here, they rent hotel rooms, they eat at the restaurants so everything increases. our resources Bring on more restaurants and Chefs to the city The message conveyed should be that we are a booming city full of opportunity. Jobs, jobs, jobs! Low price housing would attract them, if we had some. We will help you and we would like you here we are open for business " for real!" Lots of Land, Land, Land and lakes. You can operate a business from anywhere in the world now with the Internet; Great air service. Great soil for farming vegetables and grass (hay). If this is an economic sales pitch, then you are going about it the wrong way. The focus should be on soft services and the appeal of Timmins as a place with good quality of life.

We need to build more homes sooner than later. That Timmins is a place where their companies can reach develop and grow and where they will have more opportunities for improvement That Timmins is a wonderful place to reside and raise a family. That Timmins is a town with a lot of potential that can be a fun place. no real opinion I think that these places should be put into timmins because i think there would be better attractions to timmins, and it would be better for people who come into timmins from out of town, and i think that it would be better for shopping. I also think we should get better job places for better opportunities. some messages would be to come here and start a business where the necessities are easy to obtain and the business is ongoing. That we welcome people from all over the world. No matter religion or colour. We need their help because it would attract more people to Timmins, and provide more jobs for people, especially young teens trying to find part time work. The message should be positive, outlining the many amazing things about Timmins and how there is much benefit and revenue to come. Timmins youth would greatly benefit from enhanced creative knowledge/learning. That we have things to offer to them that other places don't positve aspects of timmins They should try to advertise the good things about Timmins that would appeal to everyone, and not just miners. we need one now Come to Timmins that Timmins is a good place to raise a family We are open for business- any business. Not sure Timmins will be ground zero for the action and progress related to the ring of fire and will be at a premium in a short time. To the high school students: There are jobs in Timmins where you can prosper and even be your own boss. If you stay here, you can and will have a good future. Timmins wants diversity. Come one, come all. I guess the biggest thing Timmins has to offer is its nature, quieter living? Timmins is modern, and a blended community - language, cultures with Mining at our core but also a diversified economy with leading edge firms and a high demand for those with trades, technology and other related education. The quality of life aspects - the outdoors, recreation with modern health and educational facilities - a great place to live and raise a family Need to build a community that reflects good, strong messages - which still needs to be done. Green spaces, library and museum buildings and surroundings, the airport, new transit terminal, downtown with decorations, our high schools and the newer primary schools, Northern College and Boreal, aerial views of Goldcorp, Bannerman Park and the Porcupine Lake waterfront and walking trail. Bruce Avenue all decked out with Christmas lights. McIntyre headframe and Pearl Lake. Construction photos of new homes and businesses and street improvements. Promote mining in Canada. A little less of Shania Twain, there has got to be more than a pop singer. That is always the first thing that comes to mind in most people, but she doesn't live in Timmins anymore. Schools, colleges, parks/playgrounds, downtown market, hospital, airport, public transit, festivals. the head frame The McIntyre headframe on Pearl Lake, Hwy 101; the Mattagami River which is accessible from the middle of town as a source of recreation for kayakers and canoeists; our trail system. They are already highlighted our plentiful lakes and rivers. the mcintire head frame. Golf courses, Sports facilities, Timmins and District Hospital, Timmins library, Gillies Lake, Area mining structures, area Provincial Parks, area lakes, Hollinger Park, Ski resort, Shopping venues,... The downhill ski hill, the cross country skiing and snow mobiling. The lake in the middle of the city, the many schools and sports associated with them. The Bilingualism of the community.. and how they get along. Do NOT mention the McIntyre Arena. It is not a showcase venue by any means. That's already been done. But there should be separate campaigns for specific sectors. Gilles Lake, kamascotia ski, Shania Twain center would have worked if it was in a better location, Im sure that had alot to do with it not going so well. I took my family there this summer all to find out it was closed. Would have been nice to have the heads up ( at least on their website) so my family wasnt disappointed. Macintyre headframe. St anthony cathedral. Riverside. Hollinger park. Less of the mining look. Its depressing. More of the beauty that surrounds the area, and some of the newer buildings plus the downtown core. Maybe the ability to go and see the Head Frame would be pretty interesting, especially for tourists coming to visit Timmins. Showing off the beautiful views in nature trails around Timmins. You can possible set up Facebook pages. Sadly, the city itself is rather ugly. Nature is the best bet. Gilles lake (try not to show the surrounding homes on Lakeshore too much) is probably the nicest spot in the city. The new parc in Porcupine is also very nice, but it's misleading because there is no reason to go there unless you live at that end of town. Not the shania twain centre that was a waste if money and a dead elephant the museum should have been out in there the new one is shameful for what we had on display before pictures of mines, headframes. Hollinger park (after some upkeep). Lakes around the area. Modern buildings such as the DSSAB office, Library. Outdoor space, Mining buildings, mining equipment The McIntyre Headframe. Timmins Public Library, Ski Runners, Kamiskotia Ski Hill, Gillies and Hersey Lake, Hollinger Park, Museum, Timmins and District Hospital The stores - if they were better. Stop marketing the Shania Twain Centre cause that obviously failed. Restore Sportsplex to its former state, Hollinger Park, the Mac - plant flowers, create an atmosphere where people are happy to travel to. We have many wonderful attractions but they are not looked after. A can of paint and a flowerbed with flowers in it instead of weeds would attract people. The City has much potential but we are so busy reaching outside that we forget to beautify what we already have. The downtown could be enhanced with outside cafs in the summer - not just during Urban Park to attrack people after hours or on Sundays. A place where people could walk with their visitors and sit and enjoy music and a coffee or a drink. Gilies Lake, New Seniors place (old St. Mary's), area where Home Depot is located, Walmart SuperStore. The concert in the park could be a fabulous event on a weekly basis. More so than it is now. You have a food stand there why not utilize this to bring in some dollars for parks and rec? Add things to draw in more of diverse crowd (craft shows, food shows, etc.) Gillies Lake, mine frame, lakes, wilderness A listing of the stores in the city The park would be nice if those big ugly buildings were not in the background behind the Timmins water tower. The tower could use a good cleaning to. New bleachers in the baseball park area would be great, don't even have to be new, just updated so it looks nicer. I think pictures of the outdoors areas and headframes. Library, Hollinger Park, Water Tower, Available Office/Store Rental Spaces Theriault Complex, MacIntyre Arena, gillies lake, walking trails, and the major jobs up here in timmins that people would be interested in doing up north. I think that Timmins should really highlight the small town atmospheres around them and the nature around them as well because there are already so many big industrial cities in this province that are advertised for what they sell or produce. Need to remind people that Timmins is not only about Shania Twain, we do have other famous people that came from here Downtown needs more restaurants. Less bars. None No We lived there for 5 years and really enjoyed our time in the city of Timmins. If "the branding exercise" isn't adopted, lived, and articulated on a daily basis by city leaders, it will be a colossal waste of everyone's time. The hospital here is awful. Long wait times and over worked doctors who often misdiagnose because they don't have time to spend with patients. This community must have better representation in government to promote northern development. Tap into the Cree people, make it home to them as well. If you're trying to attract people and buisineses here, make the city look better. People know the economy here is strong. They often don't come because they can't imagine themselves living here. By making the city more beautiful and attracting more leisure based businesses, more businesses might be willing to overlook the isolation and establish themselves here. We need more proactive support of arts and culture. One major barrier to people coming here, I know from firsthand experience, is the housing market. We need more homes available as well as affordable (and attractive) apartments for those looking to come here for work. Our downtown could also use a major face lift. It's great to have events like the urban park, but we also need to make it attractive for businesses to locate downtown with affordable rates, better policing and less bars. no thanks. Please stop trying to turn Timmins into Elliot Lake. I think Timmins needs to improve quite a bit to make itself attractive to businesses, investors and people. Outsiders are not going to come here and do us the favour of making the city better. If there were more services, more attractions, better organized activities, etc. and if the city had standards for new buildings and renovating old ones, the city would be much more attractive. One example is the opening of a new street and development accross from McBride, where in a prime location, there is now a giant metal, industrial building. This lot should have been for a nice business, a restaurant, an office building, ... but definitely not for an industrial looking building which makes that expanding area of town look less pleasant. That is sadly only one example of the many ways to city makes wrong choices making it go backwards rather than forward. Our new brand needs to be sensitive to history, but not exclusive or

stereotypical. I would like to see it as representing progress and hope for the future. It can't be something that could apply to the other four Cities in northeastern Ontario or it won't be effective. 17 Timmins should focus more on it's residents and infrastructure before trying to market to the outside. One visit to Timmins and it's bumpy roads, dirty or snowfilled sidewalks is enough for people to run the other way. On a positive note, when they come to check us out, they'll have a place to stay:) We need a new sports complex If we want lower taxes, we need to introduce industrial taxpayers, we need our railroad, we need to become a logistic hub for the north, we need more industrial land and keep expanding the Victor M Power Airport Lets move forward and stop thinking of the past....yes we have a great history thats why we have a Museum. Oh ya and lets bring back Jr. hockey/eskis back to Timmins Invest on your talented youth. Facilitate concert promoters. Take power away from complainers and give it to doers. Make some positive change It's time for city staff and officials to start doing what is right for the city instead of fearing what the backlash in the coffee shops will be. Showcasing the rich history of the city We don't need any more big box stores, there are enough of them as is the downtown core need to be developed and made more attractive so that it can be a more vibrant place to be. What ever happened to the plan for the rejuvenation of the downtown????? where are those plans now???? I hope these comments from all respondents will be taken seriously and acted upon. Thanks for letting me have my say. N/A City employees should do there jobs !! Take pride in what they do, and be grateful for a well paying job ! engineering and most depets are over staffed This city has such great potential, its too bad progress is too slow, a total lack of vision. City Planning should consider removal of old or derlict buildings that cannot be renovated or preserved. Politicians should be more open to change. Talk is cheap.Action is required! artists to sell there wares. Keep the store to sell locally made souveniers of Timmins (Quality items). 33 Involve the regional aspect in your planning. Other larger Northern Ontario communities have emphasized their regional appeal. If we can manage to do this successfully than we are better able to appeal and convince the political players that we mean business. In between Kap and Liskeard, Timmins should be advertising all our late night services ie: Walmart till 11pm, Shoppers open 24 hours, Metro ope 24 hours, 7ish Tim Hortons etc. etc. I beleive there are many motorists that naturally drive right by Timmins on 11 and haven't got a clue how big this city is. I strongly beleive highway 11 is a gold mine of opportunity for business to come into Timmins. No. None No you should word your questions easier so that i can understand them. no No no No no timmins does have a lot to offer, but we need to offer more. Branding is a good idea but it could be the really awesome icing on a slightly flawed and bitter cake if we are not careful.....timmins needs to take more risks and invest in infrastructure to keep this city growing. I would like to see more money put into our dog park. Most of us have dogs and need this service Thank you. The residents of Timmins need to buy into any branding effort for it to work or else residents will continue to tell outsiders that "Timmins Sucks", "There's nothing to do here", "I hate Timmins"... Artisan Square. It would attract people from all of the surrounding communities, and would improve the overall feeling of artistic culture in town. Thanks for giving us a chance to contribute ideas Play up the mining theme, all city signs should have the same look and design Sep 18, 2012 3:49 PM
